Las Vegas floral shop blooming with sales during pandemic - KTNV Las Vegas
Wednesday, October 28, 2020LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — The flower industry wilted amid the coronavirus pandemic. Some floral shops closed permanently while others had their products go to waste.Ron Slocum has been running Bloomers Florist in Las Vegas for 35 years. He says they’re starting to rebound after a difficult couple of months.“It happened very quickly and we had to deal with it and shut down the business,” Slocum said. “We had weddings on the books and other things on the books. We’re getting calls for cancellations, it was a whirlwind.”Bloomers was back in business by May, and since then, bouquets have been flying off the shelves. Slocum says he is seeing an increase in funeral services and weddings. We're Open 13 Action News October is a popular time for weddings in Las Vegas and many couples re-scheduled their summer weddings for later in the year. But while business is booming, flowers are still hard to get.“While business was shut down, the growers were also shut down and so were the fields. Workers weren’t able to get to the product and they lost a lot of what they were planting. They had to start from scratch and replant,” Slocum said.Growers are reportedly passing that cost down to reta... https://www.ktnv.com/open/las-vegas-floral-shop-blooming-after-pandemic
Flower Power: Farm-to-Vase Movement Takes Root on Chicago's South and West Sides - WTTW News
Wednesday, July 29, 2020Patty Wetli / WTTW News) Southside Blooms' floral studio, in the basement of the Blackwells' home. (Patty Wetli / WTTW News) What a Midwestern flower farm looks like, when spring bloomers are spent, and summer's are freshly planted. (Patty Wetli / WTTW News) Southside Blooms seasonal spring bouquet. (Southside Blooms) Eco House upends pretty much everything we just told you about the flower industry. Here’s a farm with land located not in South America but the South and West sides of Chicago. Flowers are grown outdoors in the dirt on formerly vacant lots in Englewood, Woodlawn and West Garfield Park, and then sold directly to consumers. That’s not just one but a series of seemingly quixotic choices.Yet Eco House founder Quilen Blackwell looks at his fraction of acreage and sees not a fool’s errand but the seeds of what could be Chicago’s own Napa Valley, a thriving homegrown industry built from the ground up, one stem at a time.“We hope we can scale this up, that one day the ghetto as we know it is gone and it becomes a place of abundance and prosperity and peace,” Blackwell said. Here’s why the idea could actually succeed.Eco House is part of the blossoming slow flowers movement, which sprung up in the last decade as the farm-to-vase equivalent of the farm-to-table concept. Across the country, intrepid farmers are reviving the long dormant traditions of growing flowers locally and seasonally, bringing back practices abandoned decades (and in some cases centuries) ago.Visit one of the Eco House farms in early spring, and daffodils, hyacinths and tulips will be flowering, just as in residential gardens across Chicago, because that’s what grows well here, not hothouse exotics. Zinnias, sunflowers, lilies, dahlias and gladiolas will come later, tied to the natural rhythms of the sun and earth, not forced. The plots are planted successively to stagger the harvest and minimize the amount of time when nothing’s in bloom — a very real downside to slow flowers in the Midwest.Blackwell calls this physical separation of farm sites “geo-diversity,” and views it as an advantage. An example is the freeze that occurred this past May. The late frost killed off all the peonies at Eco Ho... https://news.wttw.com/2020/07/08/slow-flower-movement-chicago-eco-house
Mill Pond Garden recommends hydrangeas for Cape Region - CapeGazette.com
Sunday, July 05, 2020Mill Pond Garden recommends the following.Hydrangea macrophylla, for part shade, with varieties in lacecap (flat flowers), or mop (round flowers). The best cultivar choice is Endless Summer, a repeat bloomer mop head, available in blue or pink flowering cultivars, and Twist-n-Shout, a lacecap type. Other good mop heads are the dwarf City Line hydrangeas series in bright colors, and slightly smaller shrubs, bred in Germany.Hydrangeas are best not pruned until new growth is well out in spring; then only dead canes need to be removed. People often think they should cut them to ground in winter, but in spring they get lots of new canes but only leaves, no flowers. Macrophylla hydrangeas bloom on buds set in the previous year. Cutting off the canes removes all the flowering for the current year unless it is a repeat bloomer, and even then fewer flowers bloom very late in season.Hydrangea arborescens, Incrediball, likes full to part sun, has huge round white flowers totally covering the shrub, grows to six feet, is super hardy with flower buds surviving the worst area winters, and attracts butterflies and other pollinators. This hydrangea is native to North America. All of the arborescens type need a steel stake set close to the middle of the shrub to secure ends of a sturdy string looping out to support the canes, to keep them from flopping open, an ugly look. This is the only flopping hydrangea that is worth the effort of staking, and well worth it, for its spectacular bloom. Another beauty of the Incrediball is its very white canes in winter, which shine with the sun upon them.Hydrangea paniculata likes full or at least seven hours of sun, has pointy white flowers that often turn pink for a while, is fragrant, attracts pollinators, and has two excellent garden cultivars including Limelight which grows to 10 feet tall and bears white flowers from midsummer to fall, and Vanilla Strawberry, up to seven feet tall, which bears large clusters of white flowers that fade to strawberry pink from midsummer to autumn.Hydrangea quercifolia, the oak leaf hydrangea, likes part shade to sun but blooms heaviest in full sun. The best cultivar is one of the smaller sizes, Ruby Slippers, up to six feet tall, with abundant pointy white flowers, attracting lots of pollinators. The flowers turn pink then deeper red in fall, with beautiful maroon fall foliage. The oak leaf hydrangeas all have nicely exfoliating bark with great winter interest. https://www.capegazette.com/article/mill-pond-garden-recommends-hydrangeas-cape-region/203567
Lush Peonies Can Add Beauty and Fragrance to Bellingham's Early Summer Gardens - Bellingham Bulletin
Monday, April 27, 2020Herbaceous peonies also come in many beautiful colors, including white, cream, coral, pink, rose and dark red. Start the season off with a few of the earlier bloomers such as Coral Charm, Buckeye Belle, Festiva Maxima, Bowl of Beauty, Black Beauty, Purple Spider and Red Charm (longfield-gardens.com). Coral Charm’s lightly fragrant flowers are a unique blend of coral and cream. This semi double peony is the recipient of the American Peony Society Gold Medal. The large double ruby red flowers of Buckeye Belle are displayed on compact plants that are the perfect size for perennial gardens. Pairing this peony with the snowy-white flowers of Festiva Maxima is a striking combination.Transition into mid-season with the heirloom variety Red Charm. Its long stems have few side buds, which makes it great for cutting. And the rose-like fragrance perfumes gardens and bouquets. For a completely different look, consider the fragrant, double bomb flowers of Lady Liberty. Its frilly inner petals are cream and apricot, and form a tight ball resting on a double row of flamingo pink petals. Anemone-style peonies have frilly centers surrounded by a single or double row of larger petals. The variety Sorbet features layers of candy pink and cream petals. It is deliciously fragrant, with sturdy stems that are excellent for cutting. Don’t overlook other classic, mid-season bloomers like Duchess de Nemours, Celebrity and Red Supreme. Close out the peony season with the large, raspberry-red blossoms of the classic French double peony Felix Crousse, and other time-tested favorites such as Lady Alexandria Duff and the beloved Sarah Bernhardt. Peonies are known for their extravagant flowers, but the plants themselves are almost as impressive. Leaves emerge in spring with a tinge of red and reach a height of 3 feet within less than a month. By the time the flower buds appear, the plants are the size of a small shrub. After the flowers fade, the peony’s lush, deep green leaves remain all season, providing a nice backdrop for nearby blooms. As temperatures cool in fall, the foliage often displays a nice reddish fall color. Bare root peonies may be planted in spring or fall. After planting, they will take some time to settle in. Young plants need 3 years or more to reach full size, but after that, they will flower every yea... http://www.bellinghambulletin.com/2020/04/15/306701/lush-peonies-can-add-beauty-and-fragrance-to-bellinghams-early-summer-gardens
These surprising, garden-worthy plants are perfect for Southern California climates - San Bernardino County Sun
Thursday, April 02, 2020South African cormous beauties: Watsonia, which flowers most famously in pink a little while from now, and Crocosmia, a late summer or fall bloomer whose flowers closely resemble Chasmanthe’s.Bromeliads comprise the second group of plants to which Jennings directed my attention. We think of bromeliads as colorful indoor plant options, usually for their flowers but often for their foliage as well. However, there are many bromeliads suitable for outdoor planting, especially in dry shade. Keep in mind that bromeliads are epiphytic in their tropical habitat, which means they grow on trees. Bromeliad roots are rudimentary since their function is strictly mechanical as they are used for clinging to tree bark. In the tropics, bromeliads are hydrated through the rain that falls into the cups or vases formed at the junction of their leaves and that is where we should water them.I could not resist buying two bromeliads – queen’s tears and Aechmea winkleri — both native to South America’s Atlantic Forest. This is a mostly coastal forest that stretches from central Brazil (at the elbow) to the southern end of that country but also goes inland to Paraguay and Argentina. These two bromeliads are frost hardy and flourish in dry shade.Bilbergia nutans var. Santa Barbara has perhaps the most unforgettable flowers of any bromeliad. Queen’s tears was given its name because its flowers are edged in royal blue and drip tears of nectar when touched. But it is also sometimes referred to as a friendly plant. It produces large numbers of clonal pups on short stolons or runners and gardeners, being a generous sort, are clearly delighted to give away these many extra plants, and now you understand why friendly plant is an appropriate moniker for this bromeliad species.Queen’s tears, although epiphytic in their tropical, South American habitat, can be grown as terrestrials, or earthbound plants, in our area. They make a redoubtable ground cover that can survive years of neglect and have a reputation for being the toughest of all bromeliads, capable of enduring winter temperatures of 20 degrees and colder. As for handling drought, few plants other than cacti can compare with queen’s tears. I have witnessed abandoned gardens that included shriveled, but still viable queen’s tears which, following a single long soak from a hose, rehydrated quickly enough and were soon sporting a rich crop of flowers.Aechmea winkleri is distinguished by narrow pyramidal-shaped inflorescences studded with yellow blooms sleeved in red. The flowers bloom for a month but after fading to red-orange remain that way for another four months so that you have almost half a year of non-stop color to enjoy.Worldwide Exotics specializes in drought-tolerant plants and you might then wonder what abutilon, also known as flowering maple, is doing there. Abutilon has very thin leaves, not typically associated with plants having minimal water needs. Actually, though, abutilon is highly drought tolerant, needing only occasional soakings, much like many succulents. I could not help but take home a variety known as Orange Drop whose flowers measure 2 and ½ inches across and are decorated with red venation on their undersides.Tip of the Week: I procured Euphorbia rigida at Worldwide Exotics for three reasons: it has yellow flowers and bracts that contrast perfectly with its silvery-blue foliage, it takes care of itself where water is concerned, and it self-sows where soil drains well so that you will soon have your own nursery of little sprouts growing up around it. ... https://www.sbsun.com/2020/04/02/these-surprising-garden-worthy-plants-are-perfect-for-southern-california-climates/
