Smiley: Days of stars and roses - The Advocate
Tuesday, May 23, 2017I built the bed a week ahead of filming, and waited until the afternoon before to plant the roses so they would be fresh in the scenes."The first scene began with Burgess Meredith going through the motions of tending the roses, and these scenes were filmed over and over."It was very hot and humid, and by noon the blooms were wilting and dropping some of their petals."In desperation, I went to a local florist and purchased several dozen refrigerated roses with long stems. I cut off the wilted blooms and tied them on the plants with green twist ties."After a short time they would wilt and droop down, and I had to keep repeating this until all scenes were approved by the director late that afternoon."A very challenging day trying to keep a rose garden looking real with thawing, wilted roses."Crash courseJ.R. Clary Jr. adds to our discussion of air travel:"My dad, Jimmy Clary, is a retired civil engineer and, at 83, remains the master of the quick quip."Many of those comments are now part of our family lore, and your series on airline travel has us chuckling about one of them."When flying commercially, Jimmy — like everyone else in the aluminum tube — is quietly focused during the landing process."As soon as the plane's wheels touch the runway and while the jet is zipping down the tarmac, the nose wheel descending, Dad will lean over to whoever his seat mate might be and cheerfully say, just loud enough for folks around to hear: 'It ain't nothin' but a reeeeeeal bad car wreck now!'"Blessed good pizzaMike Romano, of Lake Rosemound, recalls the days when the only sources for pizzas in Baton Rouge were Fleur-de-Lis on Government Street and Leon's Italian Kitchen on Weller Avenue."My first job after graduating from LSU was in the Ourso building on Plank Road. One day my boss told the clerical and professional staff he was going to trea... http://www.theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/entertainment_life/smiley_anders/article_f75270b2-2908-11e7-bf83-770f0ad90439.html

Highlands florist urges support for local shops as some take business to West Virginia - WSLS 10
Wednesday, December 02, 2020They partnered with a local bakery to deliver cupcakes with flowers, and they’re also shipping bouquets for the first time. The owner said people who are frustrated with Virginia’s mask requirement and pledging not to wear them while shopping are only hurting small businesses like 'mom and pop’ places.“We’re close to West Virginia and a lot people are just jumping over the border because it’s like nothing ever happened over there, and over here we’re still very restricted, but if you continue to take all of your business to West Virginia, then the businesses here are not going to be here when you come back,” said Erin Huffman, The Flower Center owner.Huffman said small businesses like The Flower Center are just doing what is required in Virginia. https://www.wsls.com/news/local/2020/06/13/highlands-florist-urges-support-for-local-shops-as-some-take-business-to-west-virginia/
