As Kim Wharton handed out two colorful bouquets of flowers to each customer leaving Chick-fil-A in Glen Burnie on Wednesday morning, their faces lit up when she explained, "they're free, one bunch is for you and the other is for somebody else."Wharton, co-owner of Maher's Florist in Pasadena, decided to participate in the second national Petal It Forward event to spread some cheer."Flowers make people happy," she said, "it's nice to make people smile."She enjoyed this year's event so much that she has already vowed to participate next year. CLICK HERE FOR MORE.FOX13's Lauren Coleman chose Mason’s Florist, one of the oldest Black-owned flower shops in Memphis.Tucked in the 3100 Block of Park Avenue in East Memphis is a flower shop, but it’s not just any shop.Mason’s Florist is one of the oldest Black-owned flower shops in the Mid-South.“We are a full-service flower shop,” designer and driver Patricia Williams said.“We do flowers for all occasions: funerals, weddings, get-well, anniversaries. We are just all-around florists.”From eight in the morning to five in the evening, the family is hard at work pumping out on average more than 200 orders a week.“We work as a team, and we know that we are here to offer a service,” Williams said.“We get our orders together, and everybody knows whatever their role is.”The shop opened in June of 1977 and has been in the family for more than 40 years.The store now sits in its third location.“My mom worked for Newman Florist on Lamar for many years,” Williams explained.“She envisioned having her own business, and she started out down on Park in that little strip mall. JJ spends time volunteering to help neighbors with chores such as putting out their trash.With money he made as a dog walker, JJ Witmer bought dozens of flowers for King Soopers employeesA florist at the Brighton King Soopers offered JJ a discount to purchase dozens of flowers, which he spent about 45 minutes sharing with every employee at the store, telling him that he appreciated their hard work. They shared hugs and smiles, and some of the employees teared up.Jody and JJ then went to the Commerce City store, at which they're regulars and know many of the workers.Another shopper stopped JJ and said, "I'm embarrassed to share this, but I just cried listening to you. My wife is a manager of a King Soopers, and this touches me a lot today." JJ handed that man a flower as well.When they got home, Witmer said JJ was happy to have helped dozens of employees that day.
