Larimer County areas offer wildflower viewing opportunities - Loveland Reporter-Herald
Monday, May 23, 2016Cloudman said. "Once things start to warm up, there's lots of beautiful flowers along lots of trails."Cloudman pointed out a couple of good trails on the Canyon Lakes Ranger District, a part of the Roosevelt National Forest:• Lady Moon in the Red Feather Lakes area, which will have wild irises blooming starting in mid-June.• Mount Margaret in the Red Feather Lakes areas, which will have a variety of wildflowers in mid-June.• Rawah Wilderness, which will have a variety of wildflowers in late summer. The Pawnee National Grassland has 150 to 180 species of wildflowers, including several varieties of evening primrose, nodding onion and prairie violets, which are already blooming, as well as Tradescantia species and opuntia (prickly pear cactus) that bloom in June, Cloudman said. As temperatures rise, different species take over that are more adapted to the drier, hotter weather, including euphorbia species, buckwheat species, Solanum species and other hardy flowering plants, she said."Moisture typically enhances blooming, and spikes in heat or dry weather can shorten the blooming season," Cloudman said.Larimer County Open SpacesPrickly pear cactus, opuntia polyacantha, can be found at Horsetooth Mountain Open Space. (Mark Yoder/ Special to the Loveland Reporter-Herald)One area to find wildflowers at a lower elevation is Devil's Backbone Open Space west of Loveland, where the flowers can start blooming as early as the end of February up to early April, depending on moisture and temperature, said Heather Young, education program coordinator for the Larimer County Department of Natural Resources.Early bloomers in particular include pasque flowers, which can be found at most of the county's open spaces (the county has 14 open spaces), and sand lilies and Nuttall's violet, she said."We have so many showy wildflowers in Larimer County," Young said. "Pay attention, look around and take time to pause. ... I also encourage people to get out often. It's fun to hike the same trail week after week and notice the changes and progression of the species throughout the season."In areas higher up in elevation, such as Hermit Park Open Space outside of Estes Park, wildflowers like cinquefoil and wild onions will bloom later in the season. The habitat and life zone — plains, foothills, montane, subalpine and alpine — determine the type of species that will bloom, as does the terrain of rocky, wooden, riparian forest or grassland, Young said. The plains, foothills and montane areas have wildflowers now while the alpine area typically will get flowers in July and August."You have this delayed timeline as you go up in elevation in Larimer County," Young said. "There's some overlap in species, but there's some different species as well."Horsetooth Mountain, Eagle's NestHorsetooth Mountain Open Space west of Fort Collins has some pasque flowers that already are blooming and milk vetch and Easter daisies that bloom later in spring."We se... http://www.reporterherald.com/lifestyles/recreation/ci_29879336/larimer-county-areas-offer-wildflower-viewing-opportunities

Texas Florist Who Admitted to Being in Pelosi’s Office Wants Case Moved from D.C. Because of ‘Cancel Culture’ - Law & Crime
Wednesday, March 31, 2021Washington, D.C. because of “cancel culture.” The defense for Texas florist Jenny Louise Cudd, who was on video happily admitting to being in the office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, asserted authorities were creating the “illusion” of a conspiracy between her and Eliel Rosa by linking their cases.“According to the Government’s Statement of Facts, the two were seen on security footage walking into the building, walking around, and walking out,” attorney Marina Medvin said in a filing Wednesday. “There is no evidence of communications or a plan between the two to enter the Capitol. Instead, the evidence is purported to be that they were at the same place, at the same time, followed a crowd into the open doors of the Capitol building, then walked out. They didn’t take anything, they didn’t break anything.”Cudd was among rioters raiding the U.S. Capitol Building on Jan. 6, after then-President Donald Trump continued to lie that he actually won the 2020 presidential election. The invaders postponed but did not prevent Congress for counting electoral college votes weighing in favor of the real winner, Preside... https://lawandcrime.com/u-s-capitol-siege/texas-florist-who-admitted-to-being-in-pelosis-office-wants-case-moved-from-d-c-because-of-cancel-culture/

Opinion: Florist charged for participating in Capitol riot should be denied trip to Mexico - Houston Chronicle
Sunday, February 28, 2021Violently breaching the Capitol is just a misdemeanor; similar to a minor traffic violation? Since when? Contrast that with Crystal Mason, an African American woman, who a Texas state court sentenced to five years in prison for illegally casting a provisional ballot because she had not yet completed her term of supervised release from prison. The African American woman gets five years for not understanding voting rules regarding probationers, and a white woman has only traffic citation-like charges for rampaging through the Capitol. If that’s called justice; justice is upside down. Patrick J. Killman, Houston Minimum wage Regarding “Dems attempt to usher through school funding, wage increase,” (A6, Feb. 10): One size doesn’t fit all in many situations. A $15 minimum wage may fit New York City but not rural Louisiana. For entry-level jobs for high school and college students a $15 minimum wage may decrease opportunities. Also, some businesses may be more suited to higher minimum wages than others. Hopefully our political leaders can work better together on this important issue. The devil is truly in the details!
