Life in coronavirus: A flower farmer innovates; a farmers market opens with caution - Citizen Times
Thursday, April 02, 2020And no one here makes less than $15 an hour, except for me," Copus laughed. She'll continue the model, and is offering flower subscriptions for regular deliveries. More: Blue Ridge Parkway, Great Smokies, state parks, forest close facilities in light of coronavirusIn the time of coronavirus, flowers make sense, even if they don't understand social distancing.Even if they pop up incomprehensibly bright in a dark and uncertain time. Perhaps it's that irrepressible cheerfulness that makes them particularly apropos. "People want to show support via flowers, and I feel lucky that what we do is relevant," Copus said. "That's a bright spot."Figuring out how to save the worldLike business in general, keeping farmers like Copus financially solvent during a pandemic carries risk. “We know this is a challenging and uncertain time for farmers and for the community,” said Charlie Jackson, the executive director of the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project, the farm-focused nonprofit that manages Asheville City Market.More: Coronavirus: Asheville Mall stays open, even as some vendors leave"ASAP has been working to try to establish new systems for farmers and local food vendors to sell their products that comply with public health requirements," he said. “Now, more than ever, we need to come together over food and take care of ourselves and our community.”The Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project has set up an interim market at A-B Tech with safety in mind. The number of shoppers allowed in the market area will be tightly controlled, with staff directing customers to queue inside their vehicles until they can enter the retail space.Vendors will remain at least 6 feet from shoppers, with customers selecting clearly priced prepackaged items, while not being allowed to handle any other products. No haggling is allowed, and people with cold or flu symptoms will be asked to leave. To minimize potential virus transmission points, customers will pay online after shopping, based on an honor system. ASAP will cover farmers, who will be fully paid no matter what. It's a risk, but a calculated one.More: Coronavirus: From grocery store chains to co-op, how grocers are handling outbreak“We’ve got hundreds of farmers and vendors and thousands of community members that rely on these ma... https://www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2020/03/20/coronavirus-while-farmers-fight-stay-afloat-asap-opens-markets/2883723001/

Heuchera or coral bells, fabulous foliage, flowers attract hummingbirds - St. Augustine Record
Tuesday, January 17, 2017By Norman WinterTribune News ServiceIt wasn’t long ago I was hiking around Blue Ridge Georgia and came across a few terrific looking heuchera or coral bells, which I had only seen previously for sale in garden centers. All heuchera species are native to the United States including the Heuchera villosa native in the Southeast from Arkansas to Georgia and north to New York.Heuchera was the Perennial Plant of the Year in 1991, and since then, there are more hybrids and varieties, colors and variegations than we possibly could have ever imagined. When you look at a plant’s tag or a plant for that matter it is next to impossible to identify which ones have the DNA from a species native to your state or region. But then there are times when “by George” there it is, a variety like carmel is labeled as a hybrid variety of Heuchera villosa. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying everyone in the country should choose carmel or one of the other varieties that might be identified as H. villosa, but to me, in Georgia, it’s a clue that it might have a little more heat tole... http://staugustine.com/living-garden/2017-01-11/heuchera-or-coral-bells-fabulous-foliage-flowers-attract-hummingbirds

Some points about poinsettias - Abilene Reporter-News
Wednesday, December 02, 2020As of several years ago, sales topped $60 million in the United States. The third-highest producer of this holiday favorite is Texas.Your purchases don’t just beautify your home but help support your state. I plan to tell my husband I am doing my patriotic duty when I bring mine home. I will let you know what happens. The poinsettia is native to southern Mexico. It was discovered by Dr. Joel Roberts Poinsett, an amateur botanist and the first United States ambassador to Mexico. Near the town of Taxco, Mexico, in December 1828, he was enchanted by shrubs with brilliantly colored red leaves growing by the side of the road. The cuttings he sent home became the first poinsettias introduced in the United States. The poinsettias we buy now are grown and shaped for seasonal household use, but in their native land or other tropical locations, they are small trees. They can reach heights around 12 feet and have leaves measuring 6 to 8 inches across. You might be interested in doing an internet search for pictures of these. They are extraordinarily lovely.I was surprised to find that Texas has a native poinsettia, Poinsettia cyathophora.
