Baskets for care; 9 year-old makes gift baskets for cancer patients - AberdeenNews.com
Tuesday, September 13, 2016My favorite part was making bracelets with hearts,” Nora said. The family delivered the baskets to Avera St. Luke’s Cancer Center in Aberdeen on Aug. 2. They chose Aberdeen because two family members, who died from cancer, were treated in Aberdeen.“I was excited (to hand out the baskets) because I got to meet people with cancer and got to see their happy faces when I handed them out,” Nora said.Nora helped raise money for the baskets through a GoFundMe page. In all, she raised around $600, which was enough money to make around 50 baskets.“It’s pretty exciting,” Julie said. “We didn’t imagine it’d be this big. Ten dollars to a 9-year-old is big, so $600 is huge. Being able to buy a little something is huge.”Julie added that she only expected to get donations from family and close friends, but was surprised to see so many strangers donating and sharing the page. She hopes that Nora’s charity doesn’t end this summer.“I hope this will make an impact on her in a big way,” Julie said. “She’s always been a giver.”Nora’s not sure yet if she wants to continue making baskets, or if she’ll move on to another project.“I want to find lots of different ways to give,” Nora said. She’s also proud that she picked something that means so much to their family.“We’ve lost two family members to cancer, and their memorial walk is around the time that we gave out the baskets, so this is a good time to give back,” Julie said.Overall, though, Nora was just happy to be a part of someone’s good day.“Doing this made me happy because I got to give things to other people which made them happy, so it made me happy,” she said. http://www.aberdeennews.com/news/local/baskets-for-care-year-old-makes-gift-baskets-for-cancer/article_0454f861-a106-59b4-9305-869bb9ff8091.html

James Harney, florist who provided tulips for Tiny Tim's on-air nuptials, dies - Chicago Tribune
Thursday, January 14, 2016James Harney ran Aberdeen's Wedding Flowers in Chicago for more than 50 years, providing flowers for thousands of weddings, including the December 1969 union of crooner Tiny Tim and Miss Vicki on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson."Harney secured that job by taking the risky step of cornering the market on off-season tulips in Holland, figuring correctly that those particular flowers would be needed given Tiny Tim's signature song, his falsetto rendering of "Tiptoe Through the Tulips." Some 10,000 tulips were used for the event."He just got this idea," said his wife, Helen. "He got all the tulips and he thought they'd have to come to him."Mr. Harney's business also provided flowers for the weddings of hockey player Stan Mikita, baseball player Glenn Beckert, a son of Mayor Richard J. Daley, a daughter of Malcolm X, a daughter of President Richard Nixon and radio personality Wally Phillips.Harney, 77, died of dementia and multiple myeloma on Sunday, Dec. 27, in his Des Plaines home, his wife said. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/obituaries/ct-james-harney-obituary-20160113-story.html

Thursday, January 14, 2016Vicky's wedding in 1969.He also used his craft in more traditional settings, including an 8-foot-tall cross displayed every Easter in front of a Des Plaines church.Harney, 77, of Des Plaines, ran Aberdeen's Wedding Flowers in Chicago and elsewhere for nearly 50 years. At its peak in the1990s, the business provided flowers for nearly 300 weddings per week."I can't think of a more caring person," his son-in-law, Frank Davis of Prospect Heights, said of Harney, who died Dec. 27 at his home. While Harney made his living with flowers, he also helped make happy memories for children.Since 2003, he and Davis ran a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing gifts for sick children during the holidays and throughout the year.Their passion for helping children in need grew out of an episode in 2003, when thieves broke into Aberdeen's and stole $2,000 and 70 toys staff members had donated for a children's Christmas party."He took that so personally," Davis said. "He vowed that if he had to replace every single toy personally, he'd do it."Instead, Harney contacted the media, and subsequent news coverage mobilized residents from around the Chicago area. Before Harney and Davis knew it, Aberdeen's was overflowing with tens of thousands of donated toys."We thought of it as ... http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20160106/news/160109507/
'No regrets': Longtime Sioux Falls florist leaves legacy of success - Argus Leader
Saturday, January 18, 2020Pat always valued spending time in his community, Jean said. In addition to running his own business, he was involved in the Lions Club and helped found the South Dakota Floral Association. According to his obituary, Gustaf was also a devoted Catholic who served at Christ the King Catholic Church in Sioux Falls and later St. Mary. "One thing he always said was, 'Get out into the community. The town supports you if you support the town,'" Jean said. Although he never went to college, Gustaf valued education. He made time to teach floral design at Southeast Technical Institute for several years and would often mentor other florists, along with attending every floral convention he could find. "He was never afraid to die, but he just wasn’t quite ready to leave this party," his obituary read. Gustaf's death comes only nine days after that of his daughter Emily Gustaf, who died at age 37. Despite having a brain injury since babyhood, Emily lived a life that was "big and bold," according to her obituary. She participated in Special Olympics for many years and took home a gold medal in swimming from the 1999 International Special Olympics. "She could talk to anyone about anything," Emily's obituary read. "She was quick to love and slow to judge." Pat Gustaf's funeral will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church on Saturday at 10:30 a.m., with visitation scheduled for Friday at 4:30 p.m. at St. Mary. Although his illness made it difficult for him to work as it progressed, Jean said Pat never wanted to slow down. When he was unable to go into the shop during rounds of chemotherapy, he set up a small studio in his home where he continued making silk bouquets for as long as he could. That dogged perseverance was what served him all his life, allowing him to continue a decades-long career in the floral business. "That's probably his legacy: Keep trying," Jean said. When the Argus Leader spoke with Pat as he closed up his shop last December, he said that more than anything, he was thankful for the customers who made his business the long-lasting success that it was. "I got to do what I love for 42 years," Gustaf said. "I want them to know how grateful I am – grateful from the bottom of my heart."... https://www.argusleader.com/story/news/business-journal/2019/10/31/longtime-sioux-falls-florist-leaves-legacy-success-gustafs-greenery/2501479001/
