Wednesday, December 02, 2020David Benda Redding Record SearchlightPlant Daddy Co. owners Jacob Dill and Luke Swanson envisioned a return to Shasta County, where they grew up and graduated from high school. They considered opening their indoor plant nursery in Redding, but the timing didn’t work out, and in March, Dill and Swanson settled on opening their first Plant Daddy in the Curtis Park neighborhood of Sacramento. They quickly outgrew that store and opened a second location in July on Folsom Boulevard in east Sacramento.Buoyed by the success of those locations, they are coming to Redding, and will open Saturday in the newly renovated downtown building at Market and Tehama streets.“We want to bring something to the community that raised us,” said Dill, who lives with Swanson in West Sacramento. “We are not moving back to town, but we will have a little piece of us in the community.”Plant Daddy is in the space on the southeast corner of Market and Tehama. Also in the building is Ryan Russell and RA... https://www.redding.com/story/news/local/2020/11/27/plant-daddy-thrives-covid-19-economy-opening-indoor-nursery-redding/6414714002/
Flowers: Make a joyful arrangement - San Francisco Chronicle
Friday, May 29, 2020Bay Area gardens and sidewalks, along anonymous fence lines and around undiscovered bends. Five steps to the perfect arrangement Guidance and musings fromRebekah Northway of the Petaler. 1. Showcase a specimen: When creating a home arrangement, the aim is pure: Bring nature indoors. “The simplicity of a single found flower, cloaked by a sprig of greenery, is enough to celebrate the beauty of outdoors and bring it inside,” says Northway. “Slipped into nothing more than a glass pitcher or bud vase, that becomes perfection.” 2. Think gin and tonic: Beyond that simple intention, Northway offers the cocktail theory of flower design. Think of an arrangement as a gin and tonic: The base of the composition (gin) is greenery that’s leafy, strong and sometimes flowering — in the Bay Area, rhododendron, azalea or Philadelphus (mock orange) would naturally fit the bill. The next element (tonic), softens the greenery and lends more shape to the arrangement — honeysuckle, rose and flowering herbs like lavender or thyme work well to achieve a sculptural quality. The garnish (lime) at the end would be any delicate blooms like Iceland poppy, with its wide, paper-thin petals and sunny, open face; or snowdrops, with their dainty, dangling white flowers. 3. Color theory: Don’t make the mistake so many grocery store arrangements make and include blooms in too many varied colors. “That look always strikes me as clown-like,” says Northway. In her work, she prefers a monochromatic palette for its simplicity and harmony, plus its inherent focus on texture — velvety lavender garden roses with shaggy honeysuckle and ripening blackberries on a prickly vine, for instance. On the other hand, Northway also admires a dramatic, high-contrast pairing like plum ranunculus and peach rose. 4. Leave breathing room: When composing an arrangement, less is better, at least to start. That way, you can see strong lines and nice negat... https://www.sfchronicle.com/culture/article/Flowers-Make-a-joyful-arrangement-15270753.php
Spring flowers fight off frost attack - lehighvalleylive.com
Monday, April 27, 2020Pennsylvania and New Jersey. So any day now I expect to see a male, although it probably won’t stick around. The frost also made daffodil flowers bend over but most of them recovered and survived. And now that a lot of what we know as normal-sized daffodils are getting to the end of their blooming period, smaller but very fragrant multiple-blooming narcissi are taking over. Daffodils, jonquils, and narcissi are all plants in the Narcissus family. From what I’ve read, the name daffodil is an aberration of an “asphodel” flower wherein the letter “d” somehow got added. But the name narcissus has a much more interesting background. Greek mythology holds that there was an extremely handsome young man named Narcissus. And, depending on what you read, either he liked his reflection in the water so much he died from looking at it, or he committed suicide because he couldn’t possess himself, or he died knowing no one else he could ever want would be as handsome as him. But that’s how the term narcissistic, meaning self-centered, evolved. Impervious to the recent below average temperatures, though, some extremely attractive ornamental trees are now covered with rosy pink blossoms, and soon flowering dogwoods (Cornus florida) will be all white. However, the white you see isn’t the flower but rather a group of four notched bracts surrounding a small flower cluster in its middle. One recent afternoon I looked out the kitchen door at the daffodils still blooming there when I spotted movement under my car. An eastern cottontail rabbit was eating millet from nearby grass and at first I thought it was another rabbit. But it wasn’t. It was a groundhog standing on its haunches, and it appeared to be trying to eat or lick something under the car’s rear bumper. A year or so ago wires in our truck had been eaten away and we blamed that on either squirrels or rodents. But perhaps a groundhog was involved because I know it’s happened to other people. I just ... https://www.lehighvalleylive.com/sports/2020/04/spring-flowers-fight-off-frost-attack.html
Keep Your Valentine Flowers Looking Their Best - TAPinto.net
Sunday, February 09, 2020Or move them to a cooler spot at night and back in a prominent spot during the day.Even if you do everything right, roses sometimes bend or droop at the neck and disappoint. This can happen if they have not received enough water at some point between harvest and your vase.Fortunately, there is a way to revive roses. Remove the roses from the vase. Recut the stems and submerge the whole rose – stem, leaves, flowers and all – in a sink or tub of warm water. Leave the roses submerged for 30 minutes.Clean and refill the vase with fresh water and a bit of floral preservative. Recut the stems on a slant, underwater if possible, and place the roses back in the vase. You will have perky fresh roses to enjoy for a week or more. And pick up an additional bouquet for yourself. Fresh flowers are a great way to brighten your home and lift your spirits.Melinda Myers has written numerous books, including Small Space Gardening. Artistry with flowers - Newport News Times
Wednesday, December 02, 2020Richardson said she had eyed that location several years ago.“I’ve always been interested in this location. Before my husband and I moved to the area, we kind of came on a tour of the Oregon coast. And when we came to Newport, this spot was available — that was like 2013. I looked at this space but the rent was pretty high.”Instead of opening her own florist shop at that time, she and Ryan decided to open CrossFit Newport at 710 NE Third St., and Tarrah went to work for the former owner of Newport Florist and Gifts, Carla Williams.“I’ve been a florist for 26 years. Carla Williams hired me, and by December 2014, I knew she wanted to sell. We bought it in March 2015,” she said.Tarrah and Ryan own and operate both businesses, and for the last five years, she has been running the florist shop at its previous location at Newport’s Bay Bridge Mall. Although she liked that space, it was somewhat hidden from view, so she began checking out other spots. She and Ryan looked at more than a half dozen locations and ultimately had the opportunity to move to the spot they had looked at years before. They spent almost two weeks doing interior work, painting every single surface, pouring self-leveling concrete on the floors, and installing a new front door and garage door. “We’re going to put new fencing in back. It’s still in process,” she said.“This building is great. And one of the things I really love about this space is I love to do classes, and it just has a lot more room. And it has the space for the walk-in cooler.”Richardson said, “The whole thing I would like to convey … is Newport... https://newportnewstimes.com/article/artistry-with-flowers
