After that, she was selected by Fiesta Parade Floats to serve on one of their teams.Bostrom arrived in California on the afternoon of Thursday, Dec. 26, and began working on the float two days later when the fresh flowers arrived. She has been living with other volunteers in Azusa — a town about 16 miles outside of Pasadena where the warehouses that house the floats are located.“They ask you to work straight through pretty much 15 hours a day,” Bostrom said. “Then, you’re done by the 31st, and that’s when the judging takes place.”The floats in the parade are created using chicken wire and plastic skin that become the frame for plants and flowers. He made time to teach floral design at Southeast Technical Institute for several years and would often mentor other florists, along with attending every floral convention he could find. "He was never afraid to die, but he just wasn’t quite ready to leave this party," his obituary read. Gustaf's death comes only nine days after that of his daughter Emily Gustaf, who died at age 37. Despite having a brain injury since babyhood, Emily lived a life that was "big and bold," according to her obituary. She participated in Special Olympics for many years and took home a gold medal in swimming from the 1999 International Special Olympics. "She could talk to anyone about anything," Emily's obituary read. "She was quick to love and slow to judge." Pat Gustaf's funeral will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church on Saturday at 10:30 a.m., with visitation scheduled for Friday at 4:30 p.m. at St. Mary. Although his illness made it difficult for him to work as it progressed, Jean said Pat never wanted to slow down. When he was unable to go into the shop during rounds of chemotherapy, he set up a small studio in his home where he continued making silk bouquets for as long as he could. That dogged perseverance was what served him all his life, allowing him to continue a decades-long career in the floral business. "That's probably his legacy: Keep trying," Jean said. When the Argus Leader spoke with Pat as he closed up his shop last December, he said that more than anything, he was thankful for the customers who made his business the long-lasting success that it was. "I got to do what I love for 42 years," Gustaf said. The show will feature works from regional artists as well as artists from Philadelphia, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Richmond. Curator Rebecca Henderson said of the show and its title, “I wanted to be able to communicate the duality of the work [the show] contains. Yes, there is a bouquet: the colorful beauty, a tantalizing expression and a bold optimism. But there are also those arrangements whose wilting marks the fragility and banality of living– that the days simply pass.” Henderson has made a name for herself in a variety of ways around Charlotte. She co-curated the 2016 show Unibrow with local sculpture artist Grace Stott, continues to co-curate a mobile and accessibility-driven gallery, Wheeling Art Dealing, and just last year started Southern Ladies Arm Wrestling (an inclusive arm wrestling league open to all femme-identifying folks).
