Washington court rules against florist in gay wedding case - Albuquerque Journal
Sunday, February 28, 2021As every other court to address the question has concluded, public accommodations laws do not simply guarantee access to goods or services. Instead, they serve a broader societal purpose: eradicating barriers to the equal treatment of all citizens in the commercial marketplace,” the court wrote. “Were we to carve out a patchwork of exceptions for ostensibly justified discrimination, that purpose would be fatally undermined.”The case thrust the great-grandmother into the national spotlight and she testified before state lawmakers in Indiana and Kansas.Michael Scott, a Seattle attorney who worked with the American Civil Liberties Union to represent Robert Ingersoll and Curt Freed — the couple denied the flowers — had previously told justices he didn’t believe Stutzman’s floral creations constituted speech. By providing flowers for a same-sex marriage, he argued, “she’s not endorsing same-sex marriage. She’s selling what she sells.”Ferguson had said the state’s argument rested on longstanding principle, and uprooting it would weaken antidiscrimination law. After the arguments in the Supreme Court case last November, at a packed theater at Bellevue College, a large crowd of Stutzman’s supporters greeted her outside, chanting her name and waving signs that said “Justice For Barronelle.”In a February 2015 ruling, Benton County Superior Court Judge Alexander Ekstrom found that Stutzman’s refusal to provide flowers because of sexual orientation violated Washington’s anti-discrimination and consumer protection laws. The following month, Ekstrom ordered Stutzman to pay a $1,000 penalty to the state and $1 in costs and fees.Stutzman entered the florist business 30 years ago, when her mother bought a flower shop.At a press conference following the ruling, Ferguson said that under Washington law, a business is not required to provide a particular service, but if it does so for couples of the opposite sex, it must provide that service equally to same-sex couples. Ferguson noted that Stutzman is not currently selling wedding flowers, but if she were to resume that side of her business, she would not be allowed to sell to only heterosexual couples.“The state Supreme Court has made that very clear,” he said.___AP writer Gene Johnson contributed from Seattle. ... https://www.abqjournal.com/951260/washington-court-rules-against-florist-in-gay-wedding-case.html
Local florists find ways to adapt, overcome as pandemic stretches busiest season - The Independent
Friday, May 29, 2020Southern Rhode Island, the coronavirus pandemic has closed all floral shops to in-person sales. It might not seem like a major barrier to customer service in 2020 but with most of Shea’s clients coming through her doors as unplanned walk-ins — and with big floral events all canceled for the foreseeable future — it’s a disruption that will likely have a wide and long-lasting impact on the floral business, particularly in tourist-heavy South County.“It’s definitely changed the dynamic of our industry,” Shea said this week. “Never have I seen it like this. Ever. But it’s making us be more creative. We have to learn to be more descriptive when we speak to our customers over the phone. We’ve had to learn how to speak colors, speak vibrant colors instead of just saying something like ‘Oh yeah, I’ve got orange and yellow.’ It’s helping us to learn how to communicate better.”She is not alone.Ten miles south from Bert & Peg’s Tower Hill Road location in North Kingstown, Joy Rich works in her office at Flowerthyme in Wakefield fielding the same types of phone calls on a daily basis and doing her best to stay positive as she guides older customers through her freshly-updated website for online ordering and curbside pickup. But finding the silver lining is all in a day’s work for Rich, who says while things are tough now, they were a lot more difficult at the start of the pandemic. She points to the early days of shutdowns as the hardest as many of the region’s top suppliers – like Fall River Florist, Bay State Florist Supply Inc., RJ Carbone Wholesale Floral Distributors, Twigs & branches Floral and East Coast Wholesale Flowers – were low on inventory or incapable of crossing state border’s due to travel restrictions.“For two weeks I had to close because we had to figure things out,” she said. “No one had flowers … so it wasn’t really worth it for us to be open. But then Easter came and I thought ‘You know, I’m going to try this.’ and it was very, very busy.”“That’s the issue that we’re having,” Shea said. “It’... https://www.independentri.com/arts_and_living/article_83d8d81a-9007-11ea-9059-d38083c995f3.html

Effort to end florist licensing in Louisiana nipped in the bud with Senate panel's rejection - The Advocate
Tuesday, April 16, 2019Committee shot down House Bill 561 in a 6-1 vote on Tuesday after hearing objections from florists who said they agree with tighter regulations on their industry."Having a license is not a barrier," said Annie Taylor, a licensed florist in Scott. "To say you are a licensed florist sets you apart in the industry."She warned committee member that if the measure passed then it would denigrate the profession."You have let us down and you have demoted us," she said. "We are artists. It's not an occupation." Occupational licenses for florists could soon become a thing of the past in Louisiana – the only state that requires a license to arrange flowers. The effort to repeal the florist licensing requirement in Louisiana was part of a broader push to review occup... https://www.theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/news/politics/legislature/article_4058ed8e-4d59-11e8-aced-a3f61ef63b1c.html

Valentine's Day roses in short supply due to COVID-19: floral industry – Surrey Now-Leader - Surrey Now-Leader
Sunday, February 28, 2021Ontario residents looking to buy Valentine’s Day flowers for their sweethearts may have to branch out from the classic rose bouquet, or consider celebrating on another day, as the COVID-19 pandemic affects floral supply chains, some in the industry say.The health crisis caused many local and international farms to cut flower production or shut down altogether last year, and while operations have largely resumed, supply is still lagging, according to some in the industry.Other factors, such as transportation, are also contributing to the shortage, they say, with a drop in commercial flights and truck shipments that are typically used to haul flowers from South America to Canada via Miami.Demand for flowers has been high throughout the pandemic, however, likely spurred by people’s desire to show affection despite social distancing and to brighten up homes during lockdowns, said Glenn Hofland, owner of the flower wholesaler Hofland, which supplies florists across the country. It’s particul... https://www.surreynowleader.com/trending-now/valentines-day-roses-in-short-supply-due-to-covid-19-floral-industry/
