5 flower trends expected to surge in popularity in 2021 - HouseBeautiful.com
Sunday, January 17, 2021When it comes to styling plants, 2021 is all about layering various shapes to create a stylish, Insta-worthy look. Not sure where to start? Larry suggests: 'Vases filled with tall blooms, balanced out with tumbling orchids or low vases of spring Anemones. This will ensure a visual feast for the eyes.'3. Sustainability and conscious buyingSustainability in the home has picked up momentum in recent years, with many of us setting out ways to shrink our carbon footprint. Larry explains that more of us will be more sustainable with our flower and plant purchases, too. 'Consumers will increasingly be actively looking for brands that offer sustainable flower options to help them make more environmentally conscious buying decisions. A green product does not need to look any less luxe. Many independent businesses create beautiful florals without cellophane and plastic wrappers to lessen their environmental impact.' 4. PersonalisationIt seems the flower trends for 2021 are going beyond just their appearance – this year will be about curated, bespoke and personalised gifting. With much of 2020 spent separated from loved ones, gifting something meaningful became a priority for many. From picking the stems, to choosing colours and fragrance, creating a bouquet that no one else has carries great meaning and depth. '2021 is all about being unique. By creating a floral prescription that is personal to both you and the one you love, it can never go out of style,' says Larry. 5. Weddings and special occasionsWhile many weddings were sadly cancelled in 2020 due to the ongoing pandemic, Larry explains that we'll see plenty of 'show-stopping' wedding flowers for nuptials that were postponed. 'Some innovative wedding flower ideas include placing a large tree at the end of the aisle, with a canopy of flowers beneath, or a dance floor filled with petals for a memorable way to dance the night away,' he explains. p... https://www.housebeautiful.com/uk/garden/plants/a35095696/flower-trends-2021/
Some points about poinsettias - Abilene Reporter-News
Wednesday, December 02, 2020Avoid plants with drooping leaves and bracts.Look all around the plant. It should appear balanced, full, and attractive from all angles. The yellow flowers in the center should not be fully open.If the temperature is fifty degrees or lower when you shop, be sure to carry the poinsettia in a bag or otherwise protect it from the wind and cold. Poinsettias indoors will flourish in bright, indirect sunlight. Place them away from drafts, excess heat, or the dry air from appliances, fireplaces, or ventilating ducts.Water thoroughly when the soil surface is dry to the touch. If the plant is inside a second decorative pot without a drainage hole, remove it. Saturate the soil completely, drain, and return to the pot. Repeat as necessary. No fertilization is needed. We are asked often if poinsettias are poisonous. They are not. However, some popular holiday plants are. Mistletoe and amaryllis are two of those. Aggie Horticulture, aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu, has lists of common poisonous plants and plant parts, as does the CDC. The ASPCA identifies plants toxic to our furry friends. If you suspect accidental human poisoning from a holiday plant, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. webPOISONCONTROL is available as an app for your smart phone. If you have garden questions, the Big Country Master Gardener Association would love to help. Call our hotline at 325-672-6048 or email us at mgardeners@yahoo.com.Until next time, happy gardening!... https://www.reporternews.com/story/life/columnists/2020/11/29/some-points-poinsettias/6415600002/
Everyday Cheapskate: The case of the frugal florist - Red Bluff Daily News
Wednesday, October 28, 2020An online savings account is a great idea, because you will earn the highest rate of interest without any minimum deposits or balance requirements. I like Ally Bank. Check them out. You’ll see how easy it is to open an online savings account. Then you can start feeding it regularly.Dear Mary: We will need a new stove soon. According to preliminary pricing, it will cost about $1,200 to replace. We’ve just moved in, and I am not sure when (or whether) we will be remodeling the kitchen. What are your suggestions for a cheap stopgap option? Sears wants $600 to fix the problems with the current oven. They advised getting a new one instead, because it is 15 years old. — Cristy M.Dear Cristy: I’d go with getting your current stove repaired. Let’s say you remodel in five years. If you opt for a new stove now, you may feel compelled to design your new kitchen around a five-year-old stove you purchased to fit an existing space. By repairing your current stove, you’ll save money now and also give yourselves more options when it’s time to start over. A lot can happen in five years. I wonder whether your salesman was thinking more about his commission than your best interests when he suggested you should buy a new stove.Dear Mary: My mother passed away in April, and she had a credit card balance of $3,500. I paid her bills while she was in a nursing home and had no income. As her son, am I now responsible for this credit card debt because she has passed away? — Frank G.Dear Frank: No, you are not, unless you are named on the account as a joint owner. If your mother was the only person on the account, the credit card company, upon notification of her death, will look to her estate for full payment. Generally, that will be handled by the executor of her estate, though laws vary from one state to another. If there are no assets, the credit card company has to eat the loss. However, if she left assets (a home or anything of value), they must be liquidated to pay her creditors before those assets can be distributed to her heirs. Nolo Press has excellent self-help books and information that will help you settle her estate, which includes notifying her creditors without spending a lot of money on attorney fees. I am sorry for your loss and wish you well in this difficult time.Mary invites questions, comments and tips at EverydayCheapskate.com, “Ask Mary a Question,” or c/o Everyday Cheapskate, 12340 Seal Beach Blvd., Suite B-416, Seal Beach, CA 90740. https://www.redbluffdailynews.com/2020/10/28/everyday-cheapskate-the-case-of-the-frugal-florist

The Best Gift for a Flower Lover Is Moda Operandi's Flash Flower Box - TownandCountrymag.com
Monday, August 24, 2020I arrayed my collection of vases, pulled out my clippers, and for a brief moment in time I thought about nothing more than color, proportion, and the balance of green and white. It was a tonic. Here's a sampling of my handiwork: Elizabeth Angell(My only complaint is that I do not own a lazy susan for properly positioning my vase as I work to fill it. I may have to upgrade my set up for future floral-arranging sessions.)The incredible arrangements are available for one more week; a Standard Box is $265 and a Delux is $425. Even better, Moda Operandi will donate $15 from the sale of each Standard Box and $25 from each Deluxe Box to The Loveland Foundation, in support of its mission to bring opportunity and mental health services to Black women, girls, and communities of color. div clas... https://www.townandcountrymag.com/style/home-decor/a32910308/moda-operandi-lewis-miller-flash-flower-box/

Keirstead's Flower Shop Still Has Strong Saint John Roots - Huddle - Huddle Today
Sunday, July 05, 2020Covid-19.“Our flowers come from all over the world,” said florist Connie Dean. “We get flowers from Holland, Ecuador, our roses come from Ontario. A lot come through Ontario and they get them from different places all over the world as well.”Australia, Africa and Lebanon are a few other places where the shop gets its flowers, with Birds of Paradise and Protea flowers being some of the most popular selections.“Ontario does have locally grown flowers so those are the closest local flowers we get,” said Dean. “Sometimes there’s someone on the Kingston Peninsula or Hampton that’ll bring in garden flowers that we can buy.”A piece of family history (Image: Elizabeth MacLeod)The business was founded by the late Guy G. Keirstead whose passion for flowers led him to first rent a stall at the City Market in 1925.Keirstead’s operated out of the market from 1925 to 1946, until he purchased property on the corner of Charlotte and Princess Street where the shop still operates to this day.Dean said the building survived the Great Saint John Fire of 1877 and used to be a hardware and butcher shop, which were combined to make Keirstead’s.“You have some of the old coolers that we still have from back when they opened up this shop in the 40... https://huddle.today/keirsteads-flower-shop-still-has-strong-saint-john-roots/
Flower growers see sales wither as planting season launches - CBC.ca
Monday, April 27, 2020Demand for non-perishable items pushed decorative plants out of the supply chain in last month's stockpiling frenzy, while the ongoing shutdown of garden centres in jurisdictions including Ontario and New York has cut off critical points of sale, threatening to leave growers high and dry. "This is when we sell. We're on the cusp of a critical period," said James Farrar, director of the Canadian Ornamental Horticulture Alliance. Trees, bushes and bedding plants are usually planted between May 1 and June 15, he said, with customers ranging from backyard gardeners to municipalities. In Ontario, flower producers discarded about 40 per cent of their Easter crop, according to Flowers Canada Growers. The province has designated garden centres as a non-essential service — a painful exclusion for the industry, since nearly two-thirds of Canadian production stems from Ontario. Neighbouring New York and Ohio have also forced garden centres to lock their doors, while Michigan and Vermont have banned retailers from selling non-essential products, including home gardening items. "If they don't open, the damage is going to be astronomical," said trade group head Andi Kuyvenhoven, noting garden centres' crucial role for bedding plants in particular. British Columbia — the second-biggest flower and plant producer — Alberta and Manitoba and have allowed garden centres to keep running, while Quebec deemed them essential along with nurseries as of April 15, though not in time for Easter. Kuyvenhoven, who with his wife co-owns a $2.5-million business selling potted Chrysanthemums and indoor calla lilies — largely to U.S. distributors — on a pair of farms west of Toronto, says clogged supply chains south of the border remain a problem. 'I haven't slept in five weeks' "U.S. customers for a time closed their distribution systems to floral and so the main grocery chains were not purchasing plants," he said, which was hard on growers of cut flowers such as roses and tulips. "If a truck can take 24 skids and four skids were flowers, the flowers came off the trucks and they put more food on the truck — which we completely understand. The only challenge is, when you're growing flowers as we do, they also have a shelf life," said Kuyvenhoven, who bought his bu... https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/flower-growers-hamilton-1.5546023
