Farmer-florists are the hot growing trend

Monday, October 01, 2018

There’s a lot of trends coming together, but I’m just happy to focus on what I enjoy doing – being creative and growing beautiful flowers.” Located in Thornhill Ontario, Antonio Valente is a perfect example of how the farmer-florist trend is taking hold even in more urban environments. Valente was a substitute teacher with a passion for flowers when he started selling cut flowers from the beds he kept in his parent’s backyard. Also marketing himself through Instagram, where he posts rich photography from his garden as well as how-to videos at @antonionvalenteflowers, he recently took over his parent’s half-acre property and still can’t grow enough to meet demand. “I’m competing with larger growers who are producing acres of flowers, so I grow varieties that a florist wouldn’t typically find from a wholesaler, heirlooms such as dahlias Gerrie Hoek and Pam Howdenand foxglove Sutton’s apricot. This allows me to differentiate myself and compete with the big guys.” Florist Rebecca De Oliveira, of Blush & Bloom Flower Studio, is buying more of her fresh cut flowers from these farmer-florists as the trend continues. De Oliveira’s enthusiasm was apparent in speaking to us, “I buy a lot from the growing number of small batch growers, and it’s amazing. Their product is far superior to anything we see imported. It’s fantastic!” “Fresh”, “local”, “sustainable” and “unique” are common buzzwords that describe both the trend towards farmer’s markets and farmer-florists. Local growers are bound by the same seasonality as the rest of us gardeners – in about a month Canadian gardeners will be digging up dahlia tubers. Sweet peas can be sown in pots during autumn and overwintered in a greenhouse, and “hardy annuals” such as larkspur and love-in-a-mist can be sown this fall. Many local-grown flowers are available now at local farmers markets. The year-round value of seasonal growers is in the relationships that form between the producers and consumers in a world that has long been dominated by commodified supply chains and major auction houses. “You met my friend Melanie at Dahlia May- she’s the coolest!” exclaimed De Oliveira when we called to talk about this story. Friendships that blossom in business over something as precious as locally grown flowers – isn’t that what this business should be about? El Paso, New Mexico florists create tribute to Walmart mass shooting victims - El Paso Times

Sunday, February 28, 2021

Maria Cortes Gonzalez  El Paso TimesA group of florists from El Paso, Las Cruces and other parts of New Mexico are creating a tribute to the 23 victims of the El Paso mass shooting using moss and dried flowers. The goal is to use 23 silhouettes to create a colorful, emotional and uplifting visual at this weekend's opening of the El Paso County Community Healing Garden through the beauty of sunflowers, cosmos, zinnias, roses, and larkspur. The moss represents the healing garden that is being created, and the flowers in all colors represent life, people and unity.Young victims such as 15-year-old Javier Amir Rodriguez, formerly of Horizon City, will have a silhouette covered completely in flowers as their lives were cut short and didn't get to bloom, the florists said. The teen was about to start high school in El Paso. Each of the silhouettes will be holding a star in one hand, representative of the Star on the Mountain in El Paso. The silhouettes will be displayed along the roads inside Ascarate Park lined with... https://www.elpasotimes.com/story/news/2020/07/31/el-paso-new-mexico-florists-create-floral-tribute-shooting-victims/5555190002/

Dayton Tennessee, pop up flower shop – The Triangle - Triangle

Sunday, February 28, 2021

Dayton, Tennessee, is filling up with heart-shaped items and red roses. I recently met a local business owner, Lacey Raburn, who owns Raburn Acres. Raburn Acres is a local flower farm and florist that has been in Dayton for the past three years. I met Lacey at a pop-up flower shop hosted at Jennings Coffee & Tea. She brought in six buckets filled with colorful bouquets, and people began rolling in. Within 30 minutes, she had sold out. Lacey has a pop-up shop every Thursday morning from 10:30-12:30 at Jennings. She and her family have a farm where they plant and grow all their own flowers, which she crafts into some amazing bouquets and sells to the community. Lacy is currently working on creating her own workshop, she used to create all the bouquets from her kitchen counter, but as of January, she said, “I went from selling 15-20 bouquets each week to selling 50-60 every week.” She just opened a self-serve mini flower stand across from the golf course in Dayton. Lacey has an incredible eye for creating different types of bouquets for any type of event. Eleanor Sanford is a Senior at Bryan College majoring in Communications, Media, and Culture. She is an intern for the Leadership and Culture Department at Bryan College. She loves to travel and lived in Austr... http://www.bryantriangle.com/news/dayton-tennessee-pop-up-flower-shop/

Palmer Florist Persists Despite No Easter Church | Joliet, IL Patch - Joliet, IL Patch

Sunday, February 28, 2021

JOLIET, IL —Easter Sunday is just days away and that means Palmer Florist, one of Joliet's longest running small family businesses, is usually delivering beautiful floral arrangements to several of Joliet's Roman Catholic churches. Not this year. As has been the case for the past few weeks, Joliet's churches will remain empty on Easter Sunday because of the new coronavirus outbreak. Funeral homes have also had to dramatically scale back their services. Many small businesses throughout Joliet remain shut down temporarily. Palmer Florist has been in Joliet since 1923. The third-generation small business has been at 1327 N. Raynor Ave. since 1964. Paul Palmer has run the business since 1978. He is like the unofficial mayor of Raynor Avenue. When he stands in his parking lot, several motorists who approach the stop sign in front of his business yell hello or engage in small talk with him if there aren't any other cars coming. People walking along Raynor Avenue stop to chat with him. People on bicycles wave and offer him good wishes.Losing out on the flora... https://patch.com/illinois/joliet/palmer-florist-persists-despite-no-easter-church

Rowe’s Flowers and Gifts changes name, ownership; soon to change location in Loveland - Loveland Reporter-Herald

Sunday, February 28, 2021

Rodgers, who died at age 68 on Sept. 15, willed the business to Hartley and Sapp, who had served as co-managers since he first bought the business in 1986. The three were working at Paul Wood Florist in Fort Collins when Rodgers invited them to join him at the shop he purchased from the Rowe family, becoming the fourth owner after the store opened in Loveland in 1889. Rodgers modernized the shop, updating the décor and flower arrangements, while making sure he gave back to the community, Hartley said. “He was a very caring and loving man — the best friend anybody could ever have,” Sapp said. Temporary Closure Sapp and Hartley temporarily closed Rowe’s Flowers and Gifts on Sept. 25, the day of Rodgers’ funeral, and used up most of the stock for the service and existing orders. The two reopened the store on Oct. 25 under the new name of Rowes Flowers. Because Rodgers’ will was not found initially, they closed Rodgers’ business and started their own, wanting to retain their customers. However, they could not sell any of the products in the store, which still were considered part of the inventory of Rodgers’ estate. Sharon Sheets, a longtime friends of Rodgers, found out about Sapp and Hartley’s situation and got her club, PEO, involved. Members donated vases, baskets and unused ribbon to the business. “A vase is a vase,” Sheets said. “Why not re-purpose them and get them out of our cupboard and into their stock?” Sheets had done business with Rodgers, Sapp and Hartley for years and considers all three to be her friends. “Both Clint and George have been more than employees. They were brothers with Bill,” Sheets said. “They absorbed his work ethic. They’ll carry on in the same way with their own personal touch.” Hartley considers the donations from the club and others in the community to be “overwhelming.” “Everybody is trying to help however they can,” he said. “You really find out the support you have, the friendships you have.
