Star French florist weathers pandemic - FRANCE 24
Sunday, February 28, 2021Brussels (AFP) There was a time, pre-pandemic, that Thierry Boutemy's flowery creations graced catwalks, magazine covers and celebrity weddings. Now, of course, the French florist -- who has worked for Sofia Coppola, Lady Gaga and the fashion house Hermes -- is having to weather the crisis like anyone else. But his passion for petals has not withered. For more than 25 years, Boutemy has run his boutique in Brussels, a cob-walled den where Italian poppies, Dutch hellebores and tulips from the south of France perfume the air.All are imported -- "Belgium doesn't produce anything in winter," he says -- but they are all blooming, alive, from soil, free from chemicals and of verified provenance. That attention to detail and devotion to nature means Boutemy sources most of his plants from small growers discovered on the sidelines of the Royal FloraHolland Auction House -- the biggest in the world -- in the Dutch city of Aalsmeer, near Amsterdam."That market is a disaster," he told AFP."It's an industry-scale war machine that works like a poultry battery farm. It's full-on commercialism," he said, describing a technique used by some to colour flowers by soaking them in dye."Instead of buying a bunch of flowers at a supermarket check-out, it's better to buy a single flower for three euros," he argued, complaining how horticulturists are being squeezed by the sector's industrialisation.- No 'fashion fl... https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20210222-star-french-florist-weathers-pandemic

The following morning, Thursday, Feb. 6, she will teach a flower-arranging workshop at 9 a.m. at the Power House on Gulf Blvd. in Boca Bay.The “farmer florists” activity is a slice of the urban farming trend spreading rapidly around the world. From Auckland to Bangkok to Cairo and throughout the United States, on city fringes and in city centers, farmers are sowing their seeds in corners of land left behind by urban development. A little bit about food security, a lot about efficient use of land, urban farmers serve the needs of residents, restaurants, shops and other businesses. Shorter distances and lower transportation demands make for fresher, better crops. An unanticipated benefit is crops free of pesticides and pests.Jennie Love’s crop is flowers. In fact, she is credited with being a sparkplug for the “seed-t... https://bocabeacon.com/wordpress/news/farmer-florist-to-speak-to-the-boca-grande-garden-club/

Living Colour florist appears on Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway - Warrington Guardian
Sunday, February 28, 2021A FLORIST from Stockton Heath’s Living Colour was seen by millions at the weekend when she appeared on Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway. Debs Gaskell, who has worked at the London Road business for 14 years, was in a feature called ‘Thank You, Miss’. The producers of the hit show arranged a number of surprises for teacher Kath Crawley, who was retiring from St Thomas’ School in Wigan where Debs went. She said: “At first I was invited to a Facebook group and then it developed into a telephone conversation when I said I was a florist. “It was at that point that they told me they were a researcher for Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway. “I started in the same year that the teacher did so they were quite excited by that.” It was arranged so that one of Kath’s surprises was flowers saying: ‘Thank You, Miss’. So a camera crew filmed Debs creating the gift at Living Colour to mark her retirement after more than 30 years at the school. Debs added: “It was only a short clip but ... https://www.warringtonguardian.co.uk/news/19114453.living-colour-florist-appears-ant-decs-saturday-night-takeaway/
