Business owners tell state lawmakers they are ready to reopen - Dayton Daily News
Sunday, July 05, 2020All my employees are furloughed and filed for unemployment and have yet to get unemployment,” Tom Hamilton, owner of Beavercreek Florist, told the Ohio House of Representatives’ 2020 Economic Recovery Task Force. “My business is struggling since there is no income,” Hamilton said. Coronavirus: Complete coverage from the Dayton Daily NewsClosed by government decree since March 24, he said they missed out on proms, secretaries week and Easter and look forward to reopening at the beginning of May in time for Mothers Day. “Who was it who first taught you how to wash your hands? Mom,” he said. But he and other people in his industry are concerned that if they are forced to stay closed they will lose employees to other companies that were allowed to stay open. And if they can reopen, he said, rehiring people might be difficult as displaced workers could temporarily make more money on unemployment than working because of a short-time federal boost to unemployment.“In addition to the questions of my employees returning, their safety and that of our customers, I have to worry about the economy being strong enough that demand for flowers and gifts continues,” he said. -- Coronavirus: Confused about unemployment? Gardening: Succulents not only save water and money, but offer other benefits - OCRegister
Sunday, February 09, 2020Aloe bainesii), apple cacti (Cereus spp.), candelabra trees (Euphoriba ingens), century plants (Agave americana ‘Variegata’), beavertail cacti (Opuntia spp.), and golden barrel cacti (Echinocactus grusonii) with patches of red and blue ground cover succulents added here and there for good measure. If you visit smgrowers.com, you will find a listing of retail nurseries near you which, upon request, will special order any of the plants grown by San Marcos Growers.Tip of the Week: Several plants with blue foliage that I had never seen before captured my attention at San Marcos Growers. Since blue is the rarest flower color, there is a gap in the horticultural color spectrum that is nicely filled by plants with blue leaves which may explain our attraction to them.Blue bush (Acacia covenyi) is an Australian native which, if relatively short-lived like many Acacia species, is hardy down to 15 degrees. This large shrub or small tree, growing quickly to a height of twenty feet, may be planted in all soil types, even clay, but should be watered sparingly, if at all. Eucalyptus ‘Moon Lagoon’ is another blue-leaved beauty. It does not exceed 12 feet in height and its foliage is perfect as a bouquet filler, as well as being highly suitable for an everlasting or dry flower arrangement. Next among the blue-leaved brigade is skyscraper Senecio (Senecio ‘Mount Everest’). The name of this plant was clearly given tongue-in-cheek since it grows to only three feet tall. However, its leaves are virtually identical to those seen on the ubiquitous blue chalk sticks (Senecio serpens) ground cover, and so the comical idea of giving a moniker representing outrageous height to this related, if still not very tall, cultivar came to be. Finally, Big Bend yucca (Yucca rostrata ‘Blue Velvet’) is recognizable by four foot diameter rosettes of thin, blue, soft-edged swords on trunks that are 6-12 feet tall. https://www.ocregister.com/gardening-succulents-not-only-save-water-and-money-but-offer-other-benefits

Tuesday, January 08, 2019Frederick Law Olmsted, designed Central Park in New York City and was the most renowned landscape architect of his day — rolled out a plan that would eventually lead to the establishment of Beaver, Vest Pocket, Denny, Dorsey, Sunset and Triangle parks, as well as the Herb Garden.Flowers brighten Broadway, Saranac Lake, in front of the village parking lot beside Berkeley Green.(Enterprise photo — Aaron Cerbone) “VIS has always had these beauty spots, and then it started being, ‘Let’s take it to the streets. Let’s take it out of these parks. Let’s see what we can do downtown,” Kathy said. As the plants branched out along the streets, connecting park to park, they were initially met with drunken opponents, pulling out flowers after late nights out, but the Steinbruecks said that nuisance resolved itself eventually. “Vandalism was a terrible problem in the beginning,” Roger said. “But the last few years have been good.” Roger said this year was perfect for flowers: some rain and lots of sun.–Who’s behind the flowers– Other local nurseries also provide flowers for the other parks and gardens in Saranac Lake. The Riverside Park garden, around the veterans memorial, is paid for by the Veterans Memorial Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, VFW Auxiliary, American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of American Legion, planted by Nancy Hurteau and maintained by the village.
