Soon, it will be time to hit your local florist or grocery store to pick out flowers for your holiday celebration — whether you’re seeing someone in person, or simply dropping off well wishes.This year, florists have seen more curbside deliveries and loose flowers as gifts, opposed to traditional centerpiece orders for family dinner tables, but the desire for customary flowers like Easter lilies, tulips and hyacinths has not changed.“Potted Easter lilies and tulips are very popular this time of year,” said Missy Willson, owner of My Enchanted Florist in Sandy Spring, Maryland. “Stock flowers in lavenders, pinks and soft pastel shades are also popular. It’s a very fragrant flower and the colors are perfect for Easter.”Willson said if you end up with potted lilies, they like to be in bright light, but they need to be kept in a cool area.“The soil should be dry to the touch — because if you overwater them, you’ll kill the plant. It was recognized by the public as the best, winning the best florist category in the 2020 WRAL Voters' Choice Awards.The company has been around for more than 100 years, since the Fallon family migrated to Raleigh in 1919 and began growing their own flowers in a series of greenhouses near Oakwood Cemetery.In 1920, the Fallons opened a retail shop on Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh, where they sold flowers for decades until they moved into the current building at 700 Saint Mary's St., which was originally a Piggly Wiggly.The business was eventually sold to the Brown-Wynne family and is now owned by the McCarthy family. The longest-working employee started helping in the greenhouses 45 years ago and still works at the Saint Mary's Street location.Frank Campisi has managed that location for 20 years. Country in Bloom, a floral shop and home decor store, which opened in November. Owner Karlee Smith previously worked in the wedding industry as a wedding coordinator and florist. Her intention was to have a pop-up shop for two months to test the waters, but with 95 per cent of its Christmas stock sold, her customers have given her the support to press forward for another six months. “I was super-nervous to open. We didn’t know what restrictions would come, when they would happen, or when things would change, so it was extremely nerve-wracking,” Smith told The News. “But I thought amidst the pandemic, why not take the plunge? Valley Florist in E. Templeton receives $10K in startup money - Worcester Business Journal

Valley Florist and Greenhouse in East Templeton has received a $10,000 small business loan from the North Central Massachusetts Development Corp., the Fitchburg organization announced Friday.Brendan Loughman, owner of the company, received the loan, with funds earmarked for startup costs and inventory.Loughman has an advanced certification in floral design, as well as years of experience as a floral designer, according to a NCMDC press release. NCMDC, the economic development arm of the North Central Massachusetts Chamber of Commerce, is a microloan lender which can provide loans to small businesses up to $150,000.Loughman was referred to NCMDC by the Massachusetts Small Business Development Center at Clark University in Worcester. https://www.wbjournal.com/article/valley-florist-in-e-templeton-receives-10k-in-startup-money
