It was recognized by the public as the best, winning the best florist category in the 2020 WRAL Voters' Choice Awards.The company has been around for more than 100 years, since the Fallon family migrated to Raleigh in 1919 and began growing their own flowers in a series of greenhouses near Oakwood Cemetery.In 1920, the Fallons opened a retail shop on Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh, where they sold flowers for decades until they moved into the current building at 700 Saint Mary's St., which was originally a Piggly Wiggly.The business was eventually sold to the Brown-Wynne family and is now owned by the McCarthy family. The longest-working employee started helping in the greenhouses 45 years ago and still works at the Saint Mary's Street location.Frank Campisi has managed that location for 20 years. LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Valentine's Day hustle at Susan's Florist gets started well before the calendar turns to February.Myriad roses need to be ordered for the storefront at 2731 Preston Highway. Grids have to be taped on top of colorful vases to hold up flowers during transportation. We are just all-around florists.”From eight in the morning to five in the evening, the family is hard at work pumping out on average more than 200 orders a week.“We work as a team, and we know that we are here to offer a service,” Williams said.“We get our orders together, and everybody knows whatever their role is.”The shop opened in June of 1977 and has been in the family for more than 40 years.The store now sits in its third location.“My mom worked for Newman Florist on Lamar for many years,” Williams explained.“She envisioned having her own business, and she started out down on Park in that little strip mall.
