Flint florist celebrates centennial with free flowers on first day of spring - MLive.com
Tuesday, July 23, 2019Flint. John David was studying horticulture at Michigan State University and it was required he find an internship, Krueger said.“So he took his internship at a flower shop close to where she was in Flushing,” Krueger said. “He never went back to school, like most people did and still do, and here we are today.”Gordon Anthony bought the shop from Vogt in the mid-1950s and John David operated the flower shop for him. It wouldn’t be long before John David saved enough money to buy the shop from Anthony in the late 1960s.Krueger remembers growing up around the flower shop as a kid. When his family’s company hosted parities and events, he would stay up until 1 or 2 a.m. helping to clean up.“I remember sleeping in the back of the vans because they couldn’t keep you at home,” Krueger said.Krueger credits his consistency and persistence to his family’s long-standing business.“Consistency is ... always (offering) a high quality product at a very reasonable, value-driven price,” Krueger said. “Persistence is you have to keep it going month after month, year after year. That’s the hard part. When it gets old and tiring you have to make sure you’re still passionate about what you’re doing.”It’s also key to keep up with industry trends, Krueger said.“You can’t be too comfortable with what you sell,” Krueger said. “Are you selling what your customers want or are you selling what you’re comfortable with? You have to change with that. Keep yourself educated within your industry by going to shows and markets.”If he had to choose, Krueger said his favorite flower would be roses because how beautifully they bloom.“I just think a rose is classic and there are certain roses when they open you just think that’s about as pretty as a flower can get,” Krueger said. “I’m not only proud of the flower shop, but I’m proud of how far the community has come in the last 15 to 20 years.”... https://www.mlive.com/news/flint/2019/03/flint-florist-celebrates-centennial-with-free-flowers-on-first-day-of-spring.html
7 Florists and Event Designers Celebs Turn To - Brides
Tuesday, July 23, 2019From Birch Even Designs"Our advice would be to focus on creating a consistent statement across the event, and flushing it out as much as possible. Filling a room with greenery, foliage, candles and/or trees can be both inexpensive and dramatic. We'd suggest separating a good portion of your budget to a special moment that will grab guests' attention and serve as a focal point for the design. This might be a hanging installation or lush entrance arrangements. Great event design is great event design regardless of budget. It's not as simple as making a few choices; it will take work and collaboration with the right people."From Jeff Leatham:"A great way to maximize your budget is to choose an affordable flower, such as hydrangea or carnations, and use it monochromatically and in abundance. A popular trend right now is to use large quantities of bud vases and candles, which I believe is a great way to cover a lot of service area with single stems. "Want more? Wednesday, December 02, 2020The president of a Bulls Head business says she is frightened after a worker had a face-to-face encounter with an intruder in the second burglary at the shop this summer.Dana Montana of Grapevine and Florist on Richmond Avenue said she had just left the store at around 7 p.m. on Monday when an unidentified man entered the shop.Montana’s manger was still in the store, however, and saw the man on the security cameras.A video shared with the Advance/SILive.com shows a man wearing a gray hoodie, gloves and a face covering with an American flag on it taking money from the cash register. The video shows the man rummaging through the register and putting what looks like cash in his pocket. Not knowing if the intruder was armed, the manager “walks slowly and closes the door” that separated him from the suspect, Montana said. This closed off the intruder’s exit, trapping him in the shop.Shortly after, a brief interaction between the manager, who was holding the door and could not call 911, and the masked man begins, Montana said.“I’ll give it back. I’ll put it back,” the man can be heard saying in the video, as he pleads with the manager to let him leave.“Look... right here,” the man continues, showing some items to... https://www.silive.com/news/2020/09/ill-give-it-back-video-shows-trapped-intruder-put-back-beg-floral-shop-owner-to-let-him-go.html

Flower Businesses Persist Despite Postponed Events - Spectrum News
Wednesday, December 02, 2020Sam Eberhardt owns Cassiopeia Farm, a small flower farm located behind her home in Austin, with her husband Dan Poole. The two spent the spring and summer watching florists cancel flower orders as weddings and events were postponed due to pandemic social distancing orders.“It seems like initially events – they didn’t just halt completely. People were still kind of holding out, holding hope that we would be able to hold events, but then eventually people realized, ‘okay,’ that we couldn’t have events,” says Eberhardt. But despite those cancellations, they say they didn’t face massive losses because orders kept coming in, just from other places.“COVID has sort of been a mixed bag for us. A lot of our flowers eventually end up in the hands of florists – maybe they go to a wholesale house first and then they end up at a florist – but florists have had a pretty large drop in business because of COVID. They aren’t doing weddings and events anymore. Our flowers aren’t going to them, instead they’ve been going direct to consumer and some to wholesale, but direct to the consumer through the farmers' market has been our main sales outlet this year,” says Poole.Sam Eberhardt (left) works with a farmhand to prepare plant beds for spring 2021. The farm's flowers have been harvested for fall and the small farm doesn't grow in the winter. (Spectrum News 1/Megan Vaughn)“I think people were really enjoying getting out to the markets, it was a safe outdoorsy thing to do during COVID. I heard a lot of people mention how it was important to them to support local farmers and ranchers, just keeping the money locally in trying to support the small businesses. And then directly I heard a lot of praise about the emotional and personal effect that bringing the flowers into people’s homes were having on them. You know, bringing in a little spot of joy ... https://spectrumlocalnews.com/tx/san-antonio/news/2020/11/17/small-flower-businesses-persist-despite-postponed-weddings-and-events
