Meet the Vendors: The Heavy Metal Florist of Coyoacán Market Tells All - Culinary Backstreets

Thursday, May 02, 2019

The list goes on and spans two traditional puestos (stalls). In perpetual motion, making funeral arrangements and putting together romantic bouquets for impulsive suitors, is Jonathan Renata Belmont, a bearded man of tall stature with a penchant for heavy metal. He rents the spaces from his aunts who inherited them from his grandmother, another florist who dedicated her life to the craft. For the past 14 years, he and his brother Marcos have run the show.“It’s a tough job like any job,” Jonathan says. “It has its stressful side, its exhaustive side. It requires a lot of dedication.”As a market vendor in Mexico City, a day off is a rarity. “There is no designated vacation here,” he says. “Days off, practically we don’t have them. Being in a touristic center that receives Mexican and foreign tourism means that when others have vacation, we work. There’s always movement here, so we have to be working.”When they started, the two brothers were each at the market about 362 days per year. Nowadays, either Jonathan or Marcos can be found selling flowers and arrangements every day aside from Good Friday, Christmas and New Year’s Day. The rest of the year, each manages to take a total of around 15 days off. Holidays and weekends are mandatory work days, being times when there is the most foot traffic, even if, as Jonathan says, the flocks of tourists are not often looking to purchase flowers.Prices for produce at the market are inflated in comparison with the weekly, roving tianguis markets and neighborhood grocers. But the displays of fruits and vegetables are nevertheless enticing. As central Mexico’s dry season comes to an end, the variety of local goods will soar dramatically.Mangoes, avocados, guava, strawberries, blackberries, mamey and figs are among Jonathan’s favorite fruits that come into season between May and August. Into the summer, he says,... https://culinarybackstreets.com/cities-category/mexico-city/2019/meet-the-vendors-2/

Bell Flowers Featured in 'Made In Montgomery' Series - Source of the Spring

Sunday, February 28, 2021

Montgomery. The Silver Spring purveyor of fresh flowers and plants, located at 8947 Brookville Road near the Forest Glen Annex, has been in business since the 1930s when the Mangums opened Mangum Florist, and later sold to their daughter, Lola Mangum Bell, in 1947. “It was Mangum Florist, probably since the 30s, and originally started by my great-grandparents. And then, in the 50s, my great-uncle and aunt bought it. And then my parents bought it from them in 1983, and I will be the fourth generation [owner],” said current owner Chad Mangum in the video.Mangum says that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted their supply chain, but the business has remained steady overall. “Actually, at the beginning of 2020, not knowing what was going to come, I decided to put a little air-purifying plant section on our website, and that has exploded. People, you know, since they’re now working from home, want to have a little air-purifying plant on their desk, [and] have a nice little background for your Zoom calls and things like that.“So we’ve seen a huge increase in the number of peace lilies we’re selling, which are probably the number one house plant we sell. Close behind that would be the orchid plants; those are just beautiful as you can see, you know the blooms, and they last for months. They’ve gotten to be a lot easier to care for nowadays, too.”Councilmember Will Jawando is a regular customer. “It’s to the point now where I just say I need my arrangements, and they know what they’re doing.”Mangum says that the best part of the business is its large base of regular customers and the location. “It’s an amazingly diverse community. I’ve been born and raised here and love the county myself. We’re so close to the Beltway right here in Silver Spring, that we can get to basically anywhere in our delivery area within 30 minutes, and that kind of service I... https://www.sourceofthespring.com/silver-spring/bell-flowers-featured-in-made-in-montgomery-series/

Rowe’s Flowers and Gifts changes name, ownership; soon to change location in Loveland - Loveland Reporter-Herald

Sunday, February 28, 2021

Rodgers, who died at age 68 on Sept. 15, willed the business to Hartley and Sapp, who had served as co-managers since he first bought the business in 1986. The three were working at Paul Wood Florist in Fort Collins when Rodgers invited them to join him at the shop he purchased from the Rowe family, becoming the fourth owner after the store opened in Loveland in 1889. Rodgers modernized the shop, updating the décor and flower arrangements, while making sure he gave back to the community, Hartley said. “He was a very caring and loving man — the best friend anybody could ever have,” Sapp said. Temporary Closure Sapp and Hartley temporarily closed Rowe’s Flowers and Gifts on Sept. 25, the day of Rodgers’ funeral, and used up most of the stock for the service and existing orders. The two reopened the store on Oct. 25 under the new name of Rowes Flowers. Because Rodgers’ will was not found initially, they closed Rodgers’ business and started their own, wanting to retain their customers. However, they could not sell any of the products in the store, which still were considered part of the inventory of Rodgers’ estate. Sharon Sheets, a longtime friends of Rodgers, found out about Sapp and Hartley’s situation and got her club, PEO, involved. Members donated vases, baskets and unused ribbon to the business. “A vase is a vase,” Sheets said. “Why not re-purpose them and get them out of our cupboard and into their stock?” Sheets had done business with Rodgers, Sapp and Hartley for years and considers all three to be her friends. “Both Clint and George have been more than employees. They were brothers with Bill,” Sheets said. “They absorbed his work ethic. They’ll carry on in the same way with their own personal touch.” Hartley considers the donations from the club and others in the community to be “overwhelming.” “Everybody is trying to help however they can,” he said. “You really find out the support you have, the friendships you have. Farmer/florist to speak to the Boca Grande Garden Club - Boca Beacon

Sunday, February 28, 2021

SUBMITTED BY THE BOCA GRANDE GARDEN CLUB – Jennie Love, a founding mother of the “farmer florists” movement, comes to Boca Grande for the Boca Grande Garden Club’s “Flower Week.” She will speak at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at the Boca Grande Community Center. The following morning, Thursday, Feb. 6, she will teach a flower-arranging workshop at 9 a.m. at the Power House on Gulf Blvd. in Boca Bay.The “farmer florists” activity is a slice of the urban farming trend spreading rapidly around the world. From Auckland to Bangkok to Cairo and throughout the United States, on city fringes and in city centers, farmers are sowing their seeds in corners of land left behind by urban development. A little bit about food security, a lot about efficient use of land, urban farmers serve the needs of residents, restaurants, shops and other businesses. Shorter distances and lower transportation demands make for fresher, better crops. An unanticipated benefit is crops free of pesticides and pests.Jennie Love’s crop is flowers. In fact, she is credited with being a sparkplug for the “seed-t... https://bocabeacon.com/wordpress/news/farmer-florist-to-speak-to-the-boca-grande-garden-club/
