Utility box art brightens corners with cats, flowers and trees - Milpitas Post
Tuesday, September 12, 2017The “Active Lifestyles” box at Lark Avenue and Oka Road does indeed picture a boy with his arms raised in triumph. This particular design was placed because of the intersection’s proximity to the Addison-Penzak Jewish Community Center, which boasts a large fitness center.Another box at Los Gatos Boulevard and Nino Avenue was designed by Blossom Hill Girl Scout Troop 60077. It’s near Van Meter Elementary School, the word “Think” surrounded by a big, blue heart and butterflies.“We all drew our ideas, but we remembered a video one girl made last year that made us think about how our actions impact the Earth,” Girl Scout Lourdes Venezia said. “That one word says so much about what we need to do.”So, “Think” was adopted as the Girl Scouts’ theme.“We had everyone design their own ideas, and we picked out parts we liked together,” Girl Scout Cameron Onufer said. “So, one girl drew butterflies, one girl drew hearts and I did something with the Earth and people holding hands.”Like the Los Gatos Weekly Times Facebook page for neighborhood news and conversation from Los Gatos and beyond. That last scene didn’t make it onto the box, however.“The other sides show a chain of butterflies moving in circles,” Lourdes said. For their efforts, the Girl Scouts received community service credit toward their Bronze service award. The Girl Scouts also received a $250 stipend to cover the cost of supplies, while the other artists received a $500 stipend. Most of the utility boxes are owned by the town, though some do belong to utility companies, Spillsbury said. While many municipalities have artists paint designs directly onto the boxes, Los Gatos has taken a different approach: The artists’ designs are screened onto vinyl wraps that are then applied to the boxes.“The wraps last forever,” Spillsbury said. “It only takes 90 minutes or so to apply them. And if one is damaged we can peel it off and apply a new one. You don’t even have to replace the whole thing, just the damaged section.”The wraps ... http://www.mercurynews.com/2017/08/31/utility-box-art-brightens-corners-with-cats-flowers-and-trees/
