A funeral director for the community - Dallas Voice
Tuesday, November 19, 2019That means we have four years left,” Lewis said. While Ferris is growing quickly — 150 homes are already under construction on the west side of I-45, and T. Boone Pickens’ widow owns a ranch on the east side of the highway that she plans to develop — the couple knows they can’t rely on business just from the Ferris area. So, Lewis said, anyone was welcome to come to Ferris and use their facility, and they can handle a funeral anywhere. Not that Ferris is that far from the Metroplex — from downtown Dallas, it’s about the same distance as Plano. It’s just over the Ellis County line, four miles south of the Belt Line Road exit.Green Funeral Home can handle embalming, whether the family is using his facility or not. He can deliver the casket to any church for a funeral service, and if the family chooses cremation, Lewis said he can do that, too.Lewis said they’ve driven as far as Houston to pick up a body, so they can certainly perform a funeral anywhere in the Dallas area. While the current Green Funeral Home building is a few blocks from the town square and can hold about 120 for a service, Lewis said they also hold services in area churches all the time. The Rev. Neil Thomas, senior pastor at Cathedral of Hope, said he was glad to have the services of a gay funeral director available in the area. https://dallasvoice.com/a-funeral-director-for-the-community/

Noble said the Boone County Coroner’s Office will determine how the woman died. The Coroner's Office did not return calls seeking comment. Kris LeBarre-Picco, 51, a nurse from Poplar Grove, placed two bouquets of flowers at the base of a tree outside the apartment complex in memory of the woman who died. About 15 other people, including several children, were taken to hospitals throughout the region for treatment of smoke inhalation, effects of the cold and other unspecified medical conditions, Noble said. Kayleigh, who has asthma, was treated at the hospital and released. She said she hopes their cat, a calico named Callie, escaped unharmed. They cannot find their pet. She and her sister didn't have time to take anything with them."I tried to get something but couldn't because the fire was too bad," Kayleigh said, still coughing. No pets were killed in the fire and no firefighters were injured, Zumbragel said. The apartment building, which has about a dozen units, had smoke detectors and they did go off in the heavy smoke, he said. The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s office, Zumbragel said, and it could take up to two weeks before investigators make a determination. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Belvidere Police Department at 815-544-2135 or Boone County Crime Stoppers at 815-547-7867.Belvidere firefighters, and those from 17 other neighboring communities, responded to the fire. Firefighters spent about six hours at the scene, Zumbragel said.At some point residents will be allowed back into the building to retrieve any belongings, he said, but no timetable has been set. Noble said a restoration company arrived at the apartment building at 9 a.m. today to begin securing the complex “and will begin the process of making the building safe before residents can come back in and search for belongings.”Residents in the area brought “carloads of blankets and clothing” to those displaced by the fire, Noble said, and the American Red Cross is helping them with temporary housing.Lisa LaSala, executive director of the American Red C... http://www.rrstar.com/news/20170311/woman-found-dead-in-belvidere-apartment-fire-others-tell-of-narrow-escapes

Petal Power: Detroit Flower Week stems from artist's vision - Detroit Free Press
Tuesday, October 11, 2016Flower House. It has since been dismantled. This year, Waud is hosting the first-ever Detroit Flower Week, bringing designers and experts from around the country to the city.(Photo: Regina H. Boone, Regina H. Boone, Detroit Free Pr)From the woman whose large-scale floral art display Flower House drew 37 designers from around the U.S. and Canada last year to transform an abandoned Hamtramck home into a work of art comes Detroit Flower Week.Lisa Waud's event debuts Tuesday and runs through Saturday, bringing 20 internationally known floral designers to Detroit for presentations and hands-on workshops at the Jam Handy, 2900 E. Grand Blvd. It culminates with a five-course meal presented by local chefs at the Detroit Public Library's Adam Strohm Hall, which will be decked out with a massive floral installation by London-based designer Joseph Massie.Waud, who owns Pot & Box, a floral company based in Hamtramck, said the idea for Detroit Flower Week grew out of her Flower House installation on Dequindre in Hamtramck, which was dismantled about a week ago."I had the idea to bring everyone back together, kind of like a reunion party or something for all the florists and volunteers that were at Flower House because we were all working and didn’t get to really know one another."As you can tell, I don’t really do things small. It kind of snowballed a little. Oh, we’ll just have one speaker, we’ll just have one party, we’ll just have one workshop. http://www.freep.com/story/life/2016/10/10/petal-power-detroit-flower-week-builds-artists-vision/91848756/

As virus spreads, some local funerals shift online - Wakeweekly
Thursday, April 02, 2020Gordon said. “We are practicing social distancing and are keeping everything thoroughly sanitized.”As cases of COVID-19 continue to grow in North Carolina, florists may see fewer of the types of events they service — not just funerals, but also weddings, high school proms and graduations.Ann Calus, owner of Annie’s Flowers in Oxford, is hopeful that the outbreak will have a minor impact on her sales.“Business was slow at the first part of the week, but we started a curbside service and things have picked up quite a bit,” said Calus this week. “I guess people decided that flowers would help brighten up the day.”Kuhn, the funeral director, said while industries may feel the effects of coronavirus, he hopes that won’t include health effects.“Our greatest hope in all of this is just that as many people stay as safe as possible,” Kuhn said. “This includes our community, the families we serve, my staff, and the families that we have at home waiting for us to return to them each night both healthy and safe.“It’s more than a little bit scary that I could be going out and helping others while at the same time bringing this virus home to my wife and small children. So with this in mind, I am happy to adapt to all the changes and safety precautions that are being instituted.” ... http://wakeweekly.com/stories/as-virus-spreads-some-local-funerals-shift-online,204494
