They assemble elaborate displays onsite at large weddings and provide bouquets and arrangements for pickup for smaller events.Since the coronavirus pandemic began, they have provided flowers for a lot more elopements, Dunn said, adding that many of the brides have booked them for a reception later next year as well. All arrangements are handmade and never mass produced.Visual Lyrics opened in 2000 and was a home studio for 12 years before the shop opened. Beloit balloon artist delivers flowers to brighten spirits - WREX-TV
Monday, April 27, 2020But a small business in Beloit is hoping to bring a little bit of celebration to your yard. Dayton Bennett became a balloon artist for one key reason."That's still the heart of it. It's all about bringing joy and smiles and laughter to people," said Owner of Dabadooya and Company Dayton Bennett. That reason is what led Bennett's entertainment business in Beloit to join a nationwide initiative."Beloit needs this. Rockford needs this. The stateline area needs something like this," said Bennett.Using his skills, Dayton creates flowers out of balloons and places them in the yards of those who purchase them."You know, they open that door and it's like 'oh my goodness' and you see that bright shining smile. I think that is what I miss the most about balloon twisting right now during this time," said Bennett.Dabadooya and Company has lost more than $3,000 from COVID-19 event cancellations."And because there is not necessarily an end date in sight, a lot of future events cancelled as well," said Bennett. But Dayton is hoping this no contact delivery method can make up for the loss."You order it, I make it, I drive by put it in the g... https://wrex.com/2020/04/02/beloit-balloon-artist-delivers-flowers-to-brighten-spirits/
It's alive! Orange Coast College 'corpse flower' blooms — and stinks — to life - Los Angeles Times
Tuesday, November 19, 2019John Lenanton. This year it is named Little Eva after Eva Shaffer, the student activity assistant at Orange Coast College.A different flower bloomed in 2017 and was named Little Dougie after Doug Bennett, executive director of the OCC Foundation. Advertisement Kate Adams of Costa Mesa gets a good look Friday at the Amorphophallus titanum, or “corpse flower,” that bloomed Thursday night at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa.(Raul Roa / Staff Photographer) Though the school didn’t charge for parking or to see Little Eva starting Wednesday, Shaffer and other staff members were taking $5 donations toward student scholarships. They had received enough donations to fund one scholarship and hoped to have enough for a second by the end of the day Friday.“It is just a huge honor to have this named after me,” Shaffer said. “It wasn’t expected, so I kind of cried a little bit when I found out.”Shaffer said she had seen the two previous blooms of corpse flowers on campus and felt the odor was like rotting fish.“Last night I was here when it bloomed and the stench ... was so bad,” she said Friday. “There were a few times I almost felt nauseous. But after a while, you kind of get used to it so it’s not so bad.” So, does Little Eva, in fact, smell like a corpse?Theresa Okamoto, a Huntington Beach resident who is an operating room nurse, said it’s not even close.“Rotting flesh is way nastier than that. Rotting flesh is funky. It’s like, plug your nose,” she said. “We have stuff in the OR that we use so we can do surgery on patients so we can handle it.” Advertisement Joe Stead, the college’s horticulture lab coordinator, said that in about two weeks, the bloom will fall. But the college said a new corpse flower sprouted Tuesday. Stead said it is an offshoot of Little Eva.Support our coverage by becoming a digital subscriber. https://www.latimes.com/socal/daily-pilot/news/story/2019-08-16/its-alive-orange-coast-college-corpse-flower-blooms-and-stinks-to-life

As virus spreads, some local funerals shift online - Wakeweekly
Thursday, April 02, 2020Gordon said. “We are practicing social distancing and are keeping everything thoroughly sanitized.”As cases of COVID-19 continue to grow in North Carolina, florists may see fewer of the types of events they service — not just funerals, but also weddings, high school proms and graduations.Ann Calus, owner of Annie’s Flowers in Oxford, is hopeful that the outbreak will have a minor impact on her sales.“Business was slow at the first part of the week, but we started a curbside service and things have picked up quite a bit,” said Calus this week. “I guess people decided that flowers would help brighten up the day.”Kuhn, the funeral director, said while industries may feel the effects of coronavirus, he hopes that won’t include health effects.“Our greatest hope in all of this is just that as many people stay as safe as possible,” Kuhn said. “This includes our community, the families we serve, my staff, and the families that we have at home waiting for us to return to them each night both healthy and safe.“It’s more than a little bit scary that I could be going out and helping others while at the same time bringing this virus home to my wife and small children. So with this in mind, I am happy to adapt to all the changes and safety precautions that are being instituted.” ... http://wakeweekly.com/stories/as-virus-spreads-some-local-funerals-shift-online,204494
Life in coronavirus: A flower farmer innovates; a farmers market opens with caution - Citizen Times
Thursday, April 02, 2020More: Coronavirus: Buncombe releases some jail inmates to reduce risk of virus transmissionBased on recommendations from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, the Asheville City Market, a primary outlet for Copus, closed March 14.An interim market will open March 21 in the A-B Tech parking lot with a new flow to mitigate virus transmission points and accommodate social distancing. Copus will sell flowers there. There will be no mingling. Shoppers must stay 6 feet apart. They must wait in their cars until they are told to enter the market. In the field, tulips crowd together. Shoulder to shoulder, they push up through the winter mud, turning the field into a tapestry of green spikes, which make Copus think of Pointillism.More: Coronavirus: Buncombe releases some jail inmates to reduce risk of virus transmissionEach tulip bulb costs 40 cents, which means she has thousands of dollars tied up in the field. When the blooms begin to blush, she pries the flowers out of the soil with a pitchfork so the bulb stays intact.
