This Chester County Greenhouse is Standing Strong Long After the Cut-Flower Industry's Heyday - Mainline Today

Thursday, March 12, 2020

Rosazza. In over 40 years, he’s seen at least seven outlets either gobbled up by larger wholesalers or simply fall by the wayside. His own company, Sieck-Wright Floral Products in Hightstown, N.J., closed a sister company in New Castle, Del., over a year ago. “It’s like all the mom-and-pops put out of business by Lowe’s, Home Depot, Walgreens and CVS,” he says. “But every longtime salesman has a following—just like Ralph, who’s hung on quite nicely.”Back in the greenhouse, Ralph has been battling a ventilator for an hour. “When the sun is shining, we leave it up and open,” he says. “And when it’s cold, we shut it down tight.”It’s a task that once took him 15 minutes. “I’m old and slow enough to call it quits, and then the boys are on their own,” he says. “I’m about the only one left as far as cut flowers go.”... https://mainlinetoday.com/life-style/this-chester-county-greenhouse-is-standing-strong-long-after-the-cut-flower-industrys-heyday/

Turning a new Leaf: Flower/gift shop helps to revitalize Akron's West Hill neighborhood - Akron Beacon Journal

Sunday, January 17, 2021

Katie Byard   For the Beacon JournalMushrooms, blueberry vines and even small not-yet-ripe tomatoes have ended up in Akron florist Matthew Caleb Moore’s designs. Now he’s arranging for his flower/gift shop — Leaf Home and Blooms — to bloom in a much bigger space, and hopefully, he says, help to revitalize the stretch of West Market Street in West Hill.“There is a lot of potential here,” Moore said, noting the more developed Highland Square commercial strip just a little west on West Market.Leaf, previously called Every Blooming Thing, will move in early November to 449 W. Market St. in the site of the former longtime Stagecoach Antiques store. For now, while that space is being renovated, Leaf is operating out of the bottom of a house tucked behind the onetime antiques shop. Leaf moved to West Market from 1079 W. Exchange St., a little more than a mile away, late last year. Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan plans to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the new location Nov. 10.“We are hoping we spark development here... connect this part of West Hill with Highland Square more an... https://www.beaconjournal.com/story/news/local/2020/09/30/leaf-flower-gift-shop-helps-revitalize-west-hill-akron/3561752001/

Receiving or giving flowers and making your home beautiful will continue to be important next year,' says Larry Walshe, celebrity London florist and founder of Bloom. 'Following two national lockdowns, we have all learned that flowers are not just a luxury, but rather a necessity that bring joy, pleasure and a boost to wellbeing. The use of plants and flowers in the home is beneficial for both our physical and mental health, thanks to the air-purifying qualities of blooms and their ability to help reduce stress and anxiety.'Take a look at the flower trends set to surge in popularity... 1. Flower subscriptionsConvenient ways to send a longer-lasting floral gift, letterbox flower subscriptions were at an all-time high in 2020, as many of us surprised distant loved ones with beautiful blooms. Unsurprisingly, they're not going anywhere in 2021, with their demand predicted to double. 'It's going to be more important than ever for florists and online flower delivery services to meet the standards of convenience that have been set by food providers and ensure that whenever you want it, we are here to serve you,' he says. 2. Florist Starts ‘Flowers for Black Men' After George Floyd's Death, Sharing Random Kindness - NBC Southern California

Sunday, January 17, 2021

She got even more famous after appearing on the HBO show "Insecure." All because, she says, she wanted to stay true to who she is, and where she lives."When you see a florist that looks like you and represents you I think that representation is so important," Brown said. After working in digital marketing, Brown decided it wasn’t for her. She wanted to get out of the office. She wanted to do something with her hands. Then came the idea of flowers. Her popularity grew as she posted with her flowers at familiar local spots. Soon, she was doing pop ups at places like Hilltop Coffee.Last summer, she took it a step further. Realizing that the killing of George Floyd and the protests that erupted had particular resonance for one group of people. So she started “flowers for Black men,” encouraging friends and followers to send bouquets to many who weren’t expecting them."And they automatically assumed I got the wrong address or it was for their wife or something like that and I said, 'Oh no this is for you." And they’re like, 'me? What?'" she said. As the world watched the breach of the U.S. Capitol in shock, many couldn’t help but wonder why the underwhelming police response to President Trump’s rioting supporters was so different from the massive show of force seen this summer at a Washington D.C. Black Lives Matter protest following the death of George Floyd. NBCLX’s Fernando Hurtado talked to Frank Straub, an expert... https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/view-park-mallory-with-the-flowers/2504159/

A devoted florist gives each 9/11 victim a white birthday rose - The Gazette

Sunday, January 17, 2021

NEW YORK — Every Sept. 11, Michael Collarone, a Brooklyn-bred florist who goes by Mikey Flowers, has the same routine. In the hours before 8:46 a.m., the time the first plane struck the World Trade Center 19 years ago, he parks his truck in downtown Manhattan and, bearing buckets of angelic white roses, walks to the site where he once helped scour for victims’ remains in the twin towers’ smoldering wreckage. There, the burly 62-year-old meets up with “my guys” from the Port Authority police. This year, he will be wearing a mask for the first time and, for social distancing reasons, the victims’ names will be played from recordings on a loudspeaker rather than read aloud from a stage, but little else will change for him. “I’m going to hug my friends,” he says. “I’m going to hug my guys.”Collarone’s steadfast devotion to honoring the victims of 9/11 isn’t a once-a-year kind of thing, though. He’s been the de facto volunteer florist to Ground Zero since it was known around the city as the Pile or the Pit. And that didn’t change when the novel coronav... https://www.thegazette.com/subject/news/a-devoted-florist-gives-each-911-victim-a-white-birthday-rose-20200911
