Club to host Violets for Valentines Extravaganza - Ocala

Tuesday, February 21, 2017

Q&A with Linda Schwambach, president of the club. Question: Where did African violets originate and how did they get to America?Answer: Baron Walter von Saint Paul served as governor of Tanganyika in North East Africa and discovered the flowering plants in the Usambara Mountains. He sent the seeds and some plants to his father, Baron Ulrich von Saint Paul, in Germany. His father shared them with Herman Wendlan, a prominent botanist at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Herrenhauser, Germany. Wendlan determined the plant was a new species and gave the genus name of Saintpaulia in honor of its discoverer. The first species was called Saintpaulia ionantha. Ionantha is Greek for “with violet like flowers.” Later it was discovered there were two distinct plants and the second species was called Saintpaulia confusa.African violets were introduced to the US around 1893 by a Philadelphia florist, W.K. Harris, who obtained plants from a New York florist who received a shipment from Europe. These plants from Africa became known as African violets and are a member of the Gesneriaceae family. In 1927, Armacost and Royston Nursery in Los Angeles, California, obtained seeds from Germany and England. They raised the seedlings and selected 10 to propagate, all single blossoms, in colors of violet, blue and purple. In 1938, African violets became even more popular in the US with the introduction of the fluorescent light bulb. This enabled the plants to bloom almost continuously all year round. Q: What is most unique about African violets?A: African violets are the most popular house plant in the US. They are beautiful and versatile as specimen plants or centerpieces, make great gifts and are enjoyable to grow. African violets thrive under normal household conditions. There are more than 18,500 unique registered hybrids. African violets come in all sizes, leaf shapes, blossom colors and types. They range in size from micro  to large. Leaves come in various shades of green. The underside may be green or shades of pink to red. Rowe’s Flowers and Gifts changes name, ownership; soon to change location in Loveland - Loveland Reporter-Herald

Sunday, February 28, 2021

Rodgers, who died at age 68 on Sept. 15, willed the business to Hartley and Sapp, who had served as co-managers since he first bought the business in 1986. The three were working at Paul Wood Florist in Fort Collins when Rodgers invited them to join him at the shop he purchased from the Rowe family, becoming the fourth owner after the store opened in Loveland in 1889. Rodgers modernized the shop, updating the décor and flower arrangements, while making sure he gave back to the community, Hartley said. “He was a very caring and loving man — the best friend anybody could ever have,” Sapp said. Temporary Closure Sapp and Hartley temporarily closed Rowe’s Flowers and Gifts on Sept. 25, the day of Rodgers’ funeral, and used up most of the stock for the service and existing orders. The two reopened the store on Oct. 25 under the new name of Rowes Flowers. Because Rodgers’ will was not found initially, they closed Rodgers’ business and started their own, wanting to retain their customers. However, they could not sell any of the products in the store, which still were considered part of the inventory of Rodgers’ estate. Sharon Sheets, a longtime friends of Rodgers, found out about Sapp and Hartley’s situation and got her club, PEO, involved. Members donated vases, baskets and unused ribbon to the business. “A vase is a vase,” Sheets said. “Why not re-purpose them and get them out of our cupboard and into their stock?” Sheets had done business with Rodgers, Sapp and Hartley for years and considers all three to be her friends. “Both Clint and George have been more than employees. They were brothers with Bill,” Sheets said. “They absorbed his work ethic. They’ll carry on in the same way with their own personal touch.” Hartley considers the donations from the club and others in the community to be “overwhelming.” “Everybody is trying to help however they can,” he said. “You really find out the support you have, the friendships you have. Stamford Florist Celebrates A 'Rosy' 40 Years In Business - Stamford Daily Voice

Sunday, February 28, 2021

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Service and quality are what have kept Stamford Florist in business for 40 years. That, and knowing your customers and keeping on top of the ever-changing world.Owner Jim Ferraro should know. He started at the company as a delivery boy when still a student -- and never left. When the original owners asked if he wanted to buy the business 40 years ago, he quickly said yes. Ferraro said he remembers talking to his mom about it. "I said, 'Mom, you take care of the money and I'll take care of the customers.'"And so it was -- she was his bookkeeper for many years before her death.Over the years, he's added gift baskets -- complete with wine and champagne -- as well as handmade truffles, even fruit and what's called an "Italian Feast" basket.Flowers -- in particular, roses -- are still his number one seller. But for a small business to survive, he said, you need to keep evolving.Stamford Florist officially turned 40 on Thursday, June 1 and to celebrate, Ferraro is offering a special cash and carry deal. Love blooms year-round at Stamford florist - The Advocate

Sunday, February 28, 2021

Cluceru. The ceremony took place, not in a cathedral or a temple or on a beach in Acapulco, but inside a flower shop in Stamford, just blocks away from the Government Center. Cluceru is also a florist, and conducting weddings in-store is just another part of her business, like selling roses and arranging bouquets. Except that Cluceru, who has owned Nobu Florist with her husband for over 20 years, doesn't quite see it that way. In the two years since she's been officiating weddings at Nobu, it hasn't necessarily boosted her sales of flowers, although brides-to-be often find her through wedding websites and blogs. Some of the clients who marry in her shop do purchase their flowers for the occasion from Nobu, but many don't. Some even bring their own with them. "I love it," Cluceru said. "Every single wedding I do, I almost cry, even though I've said it a million times." Many of the ceremonies performed at Nobu are arranged at the last minute, for a variety of reasons, whether personal or political, Cluceru said. While performing the ceremony, Cluceru choses words that emphasize the importance of respect, integrity, honor and equality in marriage. She has just one piece of advice: it's better not to get married on Val... https://www.stamfordadvocate.com/news/article/Love-blooms-year-round-at-Stamford-florist-5233785.php

Palmer Florist Persists Despite No Easter Church | Joliet, IL Patch - Joliet, IL Patch

Sunday, February 28, 2021

JOLIET, IL —Easter Sunday is just days away and that means Palmer Florist, one of Joliet's longest running small family businesses, is usually delivering beautiful floral arrangements to several of Joliet's Roman Catholic churches. Not this year. As has been the case for the past few weeks, Joliet's churches will remain empty on Easter Sunday because of the new coronavirus outbreak. Funeral homes have also had to dramatically scale back their services. Many small businesses throughout Joliet remain shut down temporarily. Palmer Florist has been in Joliet since 1923. The third-generation small business has been at 1327 N. Raynor Ave. since 1964. Paul Palmer has run the business since 1978. He is like the unofficial mayor of Raynor Avenue. When he stands in his parking lot, several motorists who approach the stop sign in front of his business yell hello or engage in small talk with him if there aren't any other cars coming. People walking along Raynor Avenue stop to chat with him. People on bicycles wave and offer him good wishes.Losing out on the flora... https://patch.com/illinois/joliet/palmer-florist-persists-despite-no-easter-church
