New floristry firm launches in time for Mother's Day - The Northern Echo
Wednesday, March 31, 2021THOSE looking to buy flowers as a Mother’s Day gift this March can shop local and order from the recently established florist, Sword Blooms. Offering a range of beautiful hand-tied bouquets available in a range of styles and sizes, shoppers can request arrangements using flowers of their choice or ask the florist for recommendations. Based from her home at Dalton, near Richmond, Sword Blooms is independently ran by Emma Sword. Raised on a farm near Gainford, when leaving Barnard Castle School Ms Sword trained as a florist, and then embarked on a 13-year career in the care sector. This winter, she left the care industry at director level to follow her passion for flowers and create Sword Blooms, based from an outbuilding at her home. She said: “I have always loved floristry, it's been an ongoing hobby for many years, during the pandemic to lift the spirits of family and friends I began creating arrangements for those nearby. Long before she opened her shop, she trained under European master florists in the Netherlands, Germany and England, and brought to her designs a distinctive European aesthetic.She told one customer today that she plans to move to Holland, but not before saying goodbye.“I would like to invite all of my customers to come and give me the opportunity to thank you for all you did for me and my business,” she wrote in her Facebook letter.“We may not be able to hug, but we can smile at each other above our masks. My eyes will tell you that I will miss my flowers a lot, but I will miss you the most.”All merchandise at the store, including display fixtures, is on sale at 40 percent off until the closing on Thursday. Grids have to be taped on top of colorful vases to hold up flowers during transportation. And, of course, flowers must be arranged in said vases for the special occasion.And though this year's Valentine Day is anomalous for multiple reasons — it's on a Sunday, a non-workday for many, and in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic — the 73-year-old flower shop is ready to do what it has done for nearly a year now: stay nimble and make special deliveries for its many customers.But like other holidays, COVID-19 continues to throw a wrench in everyone's plans."We really don't know what to expect," said Jessie Smith, lead designer for Susan's Florist. It was recognized by the public as the best, winning the best florist category in the 2020 WRAL Voters' Choice Awards.The company has been around for more than 100 years, since the Fallon family migrated to Raleigh in 1919 and began growing their own flowers in a series of greenhouses near Oakwood Cemetery.In 1920, the Fallons opened a retail shop on Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh, where they sold flowers for decades until they moved into the current building at 700 Saint Mary's St., which was originally a Piggly Wiggly.The business was eventually sold to the Brown-Wynne family and is now owned by the McCarthy family. The longest-working employee started helping in the greenhouses 45 years ago and still works at the Saint Mary's Street location.Frank Campisi has managed that location for 20 years. Wednesday, March 31, 2021I can’t wait to gain more over time.”Born in Syracuse, Rae moved to southern California with her mother at the age of four, returning to CNY each year to visit family and friends.The florist discovered her interest in design at the age of 20 while working at a beachside hotel in California.“We would receive a beautiful floral arrangement for the lobby weekly, and something just clicked in me that designing was something I wanted to pursue,” she said. “From there I traveled to LA and San Francisco, taking course after course on designing and also working in shops and design studios.
