BOULDER, Colo. — Flowers arrangements and roses are moving fast at Boulder Gardens Florist as people pay their respects for the lives lost in the King Soopers mass shooing in Boulder Monday.Joshua Dusk is a florist at Boulder Gardens Florist. He’s been there for about a year but has 22 years of experience. COVID-19 pandemic has brought hard times onto some local businesses, Okanagan flower shops are busy — some say even busier than ever. The period around Easter and Mother’s Day is typically busy for florists, and despite current circumstances, this year is no exception. At Burnett’s Florist in Kelowna, business has been steady. “Our Easter was more busy than it usually is, and we’re hoping Mother’s Day is the same," florist Galena Clancy said. Kelowna’s Funky Petals, Harris Flower Shop in Vernon and Newell Flower Shop in Kamloops are all busy during the pandemic as well. "I think it's mostly because people are kind of communicating from a distance with flowers," Clancy said. Harris Flower Shop's Brenda Gedaschke says that many of her customers want to send flowers for birthdays, or just to cheer people up.  Florists have shifted to accommodate current public health orders, offering online ordering and contactless delivery. Harris Flower Shop has even installed an honour bar outside their store, where customers can pick up arrangements and leave money in a locked collection box. “(The honour bar) has been spectacularly well received,” said Gedaschke, adding that there has only been one customer who didn’t leave enough money for their bouquet. Garden Gravlax Serves 10-12 Curing your own salmon is surprisingly simple. A dry cure of sugar and salt, spiked with citrus, spices and perhaps some peppery nasturtiums, is rubbed heavily over a fresh fillet, which is then weighted down and left for 24 hours. Once cured and thinly sliced, the delicate white and purple flowers of blooming dill and chives are ideal for garnishing your gravlax. Nasturtiums are a little more unexpected: Both petals and leaves add a fresh, radish-like flavour that’s delicious tucked into your bagel and cream cheese. 1 tablespoon coriander seed, toasted 1 tablespoon fennel seed, toasted A few nasturtium flowers or leaves 1/2 cup Diamond Crystal kosher salt (or 1/4 cup fine table salt) 1/2 cup sugar 2-3 teaspoons grated orange, lemon or lime zest One 1 pound (approximately) salmon fillet Edible flowers, for garnish Crush the coriander and fennel roughly in a mortar and pestle or pulse them in a spice grinder. If you like, crush in a few nasturtium leaves or petals, or try other edible flowers – perhaps a few calendula petals or tangerine marigolds. In a medium bowl, combine the salt, sugar, citrus zest, crushed spices and flowers. Place a piece of plastic wrap over a shallow baking dish or rimmed sheet large enough to accommodate the salmon. Scatter half the salt mixture over it and lay the fillet skin side down overtop. Sprinkle the rest of the cure mixture over the fish and spread it evenly to coat. Bring the edge of the plastic wrap up to cover the fish, place a small cutting board or second sheet on top and weigh it down with a can or two; refrigerate all day or overnight. After about 12 hours, unwrap the fish and flip it over, rerubbing the (now wet) cure over the surface; rewrap and return to the fridge for another 12 hours. Wipe or rinse off the salt mixture, pat the fish dry and slice it thinly to serve with crackers, flatbread or bagels, and cream cheese, labneh or whipped creamy (Macedonian-style) feta, with nasturtiums or other edible flowers for garnish. Fayetteville florist delivers flowers to families for soldiers overseas - WTVD-TV

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- As floral shops scramble to prepare and deliver orders for Valentine's Day, one Fayetteville flower shop is bringing smiles from loved stationed overseas.Owens Florist says they will fulfill up to 300 orders on Valentine's Day alone of both local and orders coming from deployed Fort Bragg soldiers.The shop's owner, Barbara Colman, said it's a special way to help soldiers stay in touch with their loved ones, even when they are far away from home."There's a lot of preparation, a lot of orders for flowers that need to be placed months ahead of time," said Colman.For the full staff on hand, it's more than just a busy flower delivery day."We love just giving that hometown feel that they aren't that far away.
