Kirkwood-based Cott Studio offers buttercream cakes and flowers for delivery - St. Louis Magazine
Wednesday, December 02, 2020After I got used to making flowers by piping with bean paste, I learned how to pipe flowers with buttercream.”
Cott Studio’s standard three-layer cake serves eight to 10 people. They are baked using quality materials, including USDA Grade AA butter and cage-free organic eggs. (A full list of ingredients is published on Cott’s website.) Each cake takes Lee around five to seven hours to bake and decorate. “I’m still learning and developing my technique,” Lee says. “I’m working on becoming faster without sacrificing quality and attention to detail.”
In addition to offering her signature flower cakes, Lee has ideas for holiday-themed cake decorations including chrysanthemums for Thanksgiving and poinsettia for the holiday season. Cott Studio will also take custom orders, and Lee says she’s always trying to improve her technique and working on creative new ideas.
“If you look on our Instagram, I made a 2020-themed cake (before the COVID-19 pandemic) and added a mouse using fondant because 2020 is the Year of the Mouse,” she says.
Cott’s floral arrangements are just as colorful and creative as Lee’s cakes. “I like natural, organic, and environmentally friendly arrangements; I try to make those types of arrangements whenever possible,” she says.
She tries to avoid using foam to hold arrangements together, preferring natural materials instead. “I learned this method from Constance Spry, a British floral designer from the mid-20th century,” she says. “She believed beautiful flowers should not be limited to just those with a large budget. She felt that everyone’s life could be enriched by flowers. That’s my goal, especially with my subscription flower service. I want to provide beautiful and eco-friendly arrangements at reasonable prices.”

‘Master florist’ Haruko Adkins, 90, had a passion for flower arrangements and tennis - The Washington Post
Monday, August 24, 2020She was an artist. She was definitely talented.”Morhart recalled Adkins as “totally sharp,” saying, “You would guess she was 80.” She was an avid tennis and ping-pong player and played both games well into her 80s, her friends said. When she and a friend visited the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I., Morhart said, the trip was a “thrill for her.” Born in Nagoya, Japan, Adkins studied the art of floral arrangement and earned a four-year degree as a “master florist,” her friends said. She married Earl A. Adkins, a criminal investigator in the U.S. Army Military Police Corps. With his work, the couple traveled and lived in several places, including San Francisco and Germany, before settling in Arlington. He died in 1999.Adkins had a large group of friends and was known for helping others. If someone else wanted flowers she planned to use in an arrangement, she would happily give them away, Morhart said.“She was very, very generous,” Morhart said. “She was always willing to say: ‘Help yourself. Take that if you need it.’ She had a very sharing nature.”Adkins also did volunteer projects, including making sweaters and bags to carry food for those in need. She was once named Volunteer of the Year at Goodwin House.Valerie Burke, the chief philanthropy officer at Goodwin House, said Adkins also enjoyed working at a thrift shop on the property as a volunteer and was good at making displays.“She loved getting to know people and helping them find just the right trinket,” Burke said. In the dining room at Goodwin House, Burke said, Adkins would help if she noticed others weren’t eating enough or needed a hand.“She’d say, ‘You’re losing too much weight,’?” Burke said. “Then she’d go over and help them eat. She was a real connector.”In early May, Adkins came down to meet her weekly flower-arranging group but said she couldn’t stay because she didn’t feel well. A few days later she went to the hospital and tested positive for the coronavirus, according to friends. She died 12 days later. “We were all very, very sad,” Morhart said. “She was so easy to work with, so talented and just fun to be around.”Read more:... https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/haruko-adkins-coronavirus/2020/08/18/58bc3c7a-e13e-11ea-b69b-64f7b0477ed4_story.html
Ham Lake couple trust God as they grow family flower farm business - The Catholic Spirit
Monday, August 24, 2020She crouched down and cradled one of the blooms in her hand. “These are totally unique,” she said, noting that her variety has more layers of petals than the typical flower. “The colors go beautifully with so many other things. I love how frilly it is.”It was a late July evening, and the lowering sun cast a golden hue over the quarter-acre flower field. Kristen’s three children played nearby, with her oldest, 7-year-old Lilly, carefully cutting a small bouquet; 5-year-old John Paul offering to water the blooms; and 2-year-old Chiara eyeing the blossoms. As she walked between the rows, her Birkenstocks softly crunching the dry grass paths, she pointed out other flowers — Chocolate Lace, strawflowers, sweat peas — which she lovingly grows, harvests and sells in her family’s new cut flower business.Kristen and her husband, Jonah, began Sparrow Farms this year, a project built on the dream of living and working at home together as a family, and leveraging the resources available to them. Neither Kristen nor Jonah grew up on a farm. High school sweethearts, the 30-year-olds met at the parish they still attend, St. Paul in Ham Lake. They went to college together at Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio and married in 2012.Six years ago, they rented a farmhouse near Ham Lake, on 20 acres with a field bordered by pines. After it sat fallow for a few seasons, they approached their landlord and arranged to begin farming it. This spring, they planted a plot with 50 different types of flowers. Kristen cuts, arranges and sells bouquets.Kristen and Jonah are convinced that God has led them to begin this venture, but they wear no rose-colored glasses about the challenge they’ve taken on. When asked July 30 what he sees when he looks over the field, Jonah chuckled and said, “a lot of labor.” In the spring, he and Kristen ordered mounds of compost to prepare the field’s otherwise “sandbox” soil, spreading it over layers of salvaged cardboard to help retain moisture and quality. He built a fence to keep out deer, like the five he observed grazing across the road that evening, as well as an irrigation system.Jonah holds a master’s degree in counseling, but decid... https://thecatholicspirit.com/news/local-news/ham-lake-couple-trust-god-as-they-grow-family-flower-farm-business/

Fitchburg’s Cauley’s Florist and Garden Center is partnering with Operation Service to provide free trees to vets - Sentinel & Enterprise
Wednesday, December 02, 2020Spot, and with the addition of Cauley’s we hope to take some pressure of the Leominster location,” Firmani said.Firmani said they provided an additional 100 trees last year with the support of the Massachusetts VFW Foundation and the Boston Bruins Foundation.“We delivered those trees to Fort Devens for families that could not make it out this way,” he said.Firmani said the pandemic was part of the inspiration behind adding another Trees for Soldiers location.“With COVID-19 affecting all of our day to day decisions the timing to reach out and add a new site seemed right,” he said. “We wanted provide people with another option to promote social distancing and still continue the growth of the program.”Firmani said Cauley’s is an ideal location because it already has the infrastructure in place to handle the additional trees inventory and it has a similar set up to The Gardner’s Spot.“Not only can U.S. service men and women go and get their tree at no charge as a thank you from Operation Service and their community for their service and sacrifice, but they can also shop for flowers, wreaths, garland, all in one place,” he said.Cauley’s does have ties to the military. Bob Cauley opened the first greenhouse in 1966 on Lancaster Street in Leominster after he retired from the Army. He was stationed at Fort Devens. His son Bill Cauley purchased the business from his parents and built the current location in the early 1990s. Landry, Bill’s nephew and Bob’s grandson, has worked there since 2001. Francine Bergeron is the florist manager.Landry said they enjoy interacting with community members and various groups and organizations at the garden center.“Whether it’s people shopping for their home gardens, churches decorating for the holidays, schools doing fundraisers or the Friends of the Leominster Library doing their annual poinsettia sale, we are here to help in whatever ways we can,” Landry said. “That said, an annual event like Trees for Soldiers simply doesn’t happen without somebody like Joe and the folks at Operation Service doing the hard work and having a big idea. When somebody like Joe tells you that this program can become even bigger and better, and that he thinks you can help, it’s an absolute no-brainer – you want to get involved.”Landry said Cauley’s has remained busy throughout the pandemic, beginning in the spring with people “stuck at home” looking to start their first vegetable garden, decorate their new home office with plants, clean up their landscaping, “or simply just adding some colorful flowers to have a nicer staycation.”“Those trends have continued through the year and now that the holidays are here we are doing everything we can to provide our customers the seasonal products they come to us for, and help them have as happy and normal a holiday season as they can,” Landry said.Christmas trees arrived at both Cauley’s and The Gardner’s spot last week.
