Fire Tears Through Nassau Florist | Garden City, NY Patch - Garden City, NY Patch
Sunday, July 05, 2020Country Arts Florist at 535 Hempstead Turnpike in West Hempstead for a fire at 5:20 a.m. First responders saw flames in the rear of the building. Ten fire departments – Franklin Square and Munson, West Hempstead, Elmont, Uniondale, Garden City Park, Garden City, Floral Park, Malverne, Lakeview and New Hyde Park – totaling 125 firefighters responded to the scene. There were no injuries reported, police said. The fire caused extensive damage to the building and to two parked business vans on the Munson Avenue side of the building. The building and the vehicles were unoccupied. (CBSNewYork) – Countless people have come up with creative ways to help others during the coronavirus pandemic.One Franklin Lakes woman is working tireless to bring life to hospitals that have seen so much despair.Former nurse Amy O’Hara, along with Colony Florist and Red Bliss Design, has started the “You Are Not Alone” campaign, bringing flowers to doctors, nurses and patients at hospitals all over the Tri-State Area.“They’ve been talking about what a war zone it has been at the hospitals. They’ve been telling me about what it’s like for the patients. They’re in these rooms alone, they’re not allowed visitors,” O’Hara told CBS2’s Chris Wragge. “I thought this might brighten up their day and let them know we’re thinking of them.”O’Hara always loved the quote: “If you want a rainbow, you have to put up with the rain.”“The nurses have really enjoyed passing them out. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles County to start up the economy, allowing higher-at-risk workplaces, such as bookstores, clothing stores, sporting goods shops, florists and car dealership showrooms, to open once again but only for curbside pickup and delivery for phone and online orders. Newsom and the county issued guidelines for establishments to follow as they prepared to open, including that they must adhere to physical distancing and disinfecting protocols, provide face masks to workers, increase pickup and delivery services and post a checklist sign of compliance at the entrance of each facility. Among the local businesses that reopened Friday was florist shop Sunflorist in Canyon Country, which kept busy with Mother’s Day arrangement orders.“It’s crazy, crazy, crazy. We’re really thankful for the reopening and it’s just in time to thank all the mothers who are working right now during a very tragic time,” said store manager Kimo Hernandez.While curbside pickup service is in the works, the shop is currently offering non-contact deliveries, where drivers drop off arrangements at home porches, without the need of a signature, Hernandez said, adding that employees are also practicing up to 12 feet of distancing and delivery workers are using special racks for safer pickup arrangements. Sunday, July 05, 2020ENGLEWOOD, N.J.—Years before anyone could go on a florist’s website, browse photos of pre-designed arrangements, and pop in a credit card number, there was a method of ordering that seems pretty foreign to us today—the telegraph. Peter Duff & Sons, an Englewood florist, was a member of the Florists Telegraph Delivery Association. The accompanying advertisement for Duff’s is dated to Valentine’s Day of 1933. Florists Telegraph Delivery Association—which still exists today under the familiar acronym FTD—became the country’s first flowers-by-wire service in 1910. It enabled a customer to order flowers by telegraph, using local florists in the recipient’s area to fulfill the order on the same day. Another interesting part of this ad is the old style of phone number: Englewood 3-7500. In those days, connecting to another person’s telephone required the help of an operator. Feeling adventurous, they bought the greenhouse—designed by Lord & Burnham in the ’50s—with an acre of land, eventually acquiring eight more plots that were once the site of Held’s Florist, a flower farm, dating back to the 1800s. Today, the farmstead is known as Urban Buds: City Grown Flowers, where more than 70 varieties of flowers are grown. “We’re in the heart of the city,” says Davis. “Few people get to connect with farming, and [our shop] gives them the opportunity.”

Sunday, July 05, 2020Some businesses, like local bars and restaurants are becoming creative with curbside deliveries, others like local florists are able to continue taking online orders and make deliveries but can’t have people come inside their stores to pick out their own flowers. For restaurant and bar owners that means coming up with a new routine for getting their food out to their customers. For Bethel Island’s Tugs owner Joni Fragga-Pratt, it meant changing how they do business altogether and bringing their staff down to just one person.Tugs is a popular restaurant/bar on the island. The restaurant side of the business offers a full menu of sandwiches and burgers, which under the county health department’s order has allowed Fragga-Pratt’s business to remain open. Even so, Fragga-Pratt acknowledges that “this is the worst thing we’ve ever experienced in 18 years of being in the restaurant business.” After working to unravel the health department’s temporary codes, it was decided that Tugs could offer a takeout system that had one employee on staff taking orders, cooking meals and delivering the food curbside for takeout.While Tugs does well with food orders, the big draw for the community is the bar and nightlife. Sunday, July 05, 2020Watching A Floral Design Show With A Florist Is Entertaining May 25, 2020 This long weekend is a good chance to catch up on some shows.Even if you’ve already went though your queue, streaming services aren’t out of new stuff to drop.Which brings me to what I did most of the weekend. Netflix dropped a new floral design competition show called “The Big Flower Fight” last week.Teams of amateur designers from different backgrounds have to compete making wild, huge displays using different types of plants each episode.It’s impressive as heck.
