Flower shops spring back to life ahead of Mother’s Day after state lifts restrictions - The Boston GlobeFriday, May 29, 2020
From Brookline to Cambridge to Dorchester, florists were crushed with orders from sons and daughters looking to substitute bouquets for brunches this Mother’s Day due to social distancing restrictions.“It’s only Wednesday and I’ve pretty much doubled what I did last year,” Mike Lopez said over the sound of ringing phones at his family’s 100-year-old shop, Lopez the Florist, in Dorchester. “I’m starting to worry if I need to shut down my website and say ‘Enough.’ ”Florists said that the swell is a godsend for businesses that were on the brink of bankruptcy, but that they remain hamstrung by staff restrictions and a global supply chain still shattered by the pandemic. The luxury florist Winston Flowers reached peak capacity for Mother’s Day orders on Wednesday in Boston, Greenwich, Conn. and New York City, citing “changes in the supply chain and our commitment to following all safety and health guidelines by limiting our staff in order to keep their workspaces distant.” Any new orders for the holiday will be delivered the following week.Flower orders typically hitch rides in the cargo compartment of passenger planes, allowing for efficient travel at bargain prices. But with limited international passenger flights between the United States and flower powerhouses like the Netherlands, Colombia, and Kenya, there are very few cost-effective ways to ship flowers now, even when there is a demand.Advertisement“That is the latest battle. Can you even get the flowers on a plane? Usually, I can have any bulb flower from Holland within two days. Or a rose from South America,” said Jackie Levine, manager of Central Square Florist in Cambridge, which has been passed down in her family over four generations. “Those that came took a week.”figcaption class=" img_caption margin_horizontal_0--mobile margin_horizontal_0--... https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/05/07/nation/after-months-empty-shelves-closed-shops-florists-spring-back-life-ahead-mothers-day-surge/
Victoria's Mobile Flower Shop is always in bloom with a new brick-and-mortar store - Tribune-ReviewSaturday, January 18, 2020
Up until recently, Smith was running the business out of her Brookline basement, where she lives with her husband Josh and their dog Harris.Victoria’s Mobile Flower Shop now has a brick-and-mortar store in Avalon. It’s a bright and sunny space located at 643 California Ave. Years ago, the building housed a barber. When he retired from the hairstyling business, his wife transformed it into a flower shop. The shelves are relatively bare — lined with a few locally made products, including soaps, T-shirts and candles — but that will change after the holiday season when Smith has time to make the place blossom.Since opening in early December, she’s hosted classes on everything from block-printing and hand-lettering to wreath-making and cocktail mixology. The studio also is available to rent for private parties. There’s a large white table in the center of the store where people can work and mingle. Harris, a friendly pup who looks like a Muppet come to life, greets customers at the door.“More than anything, I want this to be a community space,” Smith says. “I even had a sign out front last week that said, ‘Don’t come in here for flowers. Come for conversation and a cup of coffee.’ ”Giving back to the community is important to Smith, which is why she launched an online Pay It Forward campaign. People can donate money through PayPal and, once the pot reaches $25, Victoria’s Mobile Flower Shop will deliver a bouquet to someone who could use a morale boost. Smith has already compiled a list of nursing homes and hospitals in the area.Aside from making deliveries, the truck will be parked for the winter. Smith is taking requests from individuals and businesses who want to book it for events when the warm weather rolls in.She hopes the Daihatsu – which boasts the license plate FLOWERS – is a welcome sight in every Pittsburgh neighborhood and inspires people to pick a bouquet.“A lot of times people think flowers are a luxury they can’t get for themselves,” Smith says. “But, when you make them accessible and it’s something you can grab one or 40 of, it makes your day.”TribLIVE's Daily and Weekly email newsletters deliver the news you want and information you need, right to your inbox.More Allegheny Stories... https://triblive.com/local/pittsburgh-allegheny/victorias-mobile-flower-shop-is-always-in-bloom-with-a-new-brick-and-mortar-store/

The Bouquet Farm blooms in the Fraser Valley - Vancouver SunWednesday, March 31, 2021
English says with a laugh. “My grandfather was a greenhouse grower and they had a wholesale floral industry. And my dad took over a portion, so I worked for him. … And then my mom was also a florist.” Her father eventually sold the floral arm of the family business connected to Houweling Nurseries, where English continued to work after the sale. But, when the floral company closed down, forcing English to lose her job — an event that coincided with a breast cancer diagnosis — she took some time to focus on herself. And then, she got right back into the growing game. source data-srcset="https://smartcdn.prod.postmedia.digital/vancouversun/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/258982965-1227_feat_bouquet_farm_1-s.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=472&type=jpg, https://smartcdn.prod.postmed... https://vancouversun.com/homes/gardening/the-bouquet-farm-blooms-in-the-fraser-valley
Bloomin’ good: Clinton florist business is awards finalist - 100 Mile House Free PressWednesday, March 31, 2021
I’m still trying to make heads or tails out of it. I’ve never been very good at honouring myself, but I’m very proud, and very thankful, to whoever nominated me.”Lawrence began working at a florist shop in Prince Rupert when she was 14, and continued until she went off to college for theatre school. At that point, she put flowers aside, but found they kept coming back to her: “I did my own wedding flowers, and flowers for friends.” Finally, at her mother’s encouragement, she decided to go for it, and Bubbles’ Blossom Design was born in time for Mother’s Day 2018.When Lawrence and her husband Jordan moved to Clinton in October 2016, she realized a florist shop was something the area needed.“At first I thought I’d research it for a couple of years, see how it goes, see how much interest there was, but then I decided just to jump in and do it. If an opportunity comes along you jump in with both feet.”READ MORE: Clinton hires new Chief Administrative OfficerShe says that the overhead was low: “I bought a used cooler and a couple of buckets, so it was an easy thing to do.” Until recently she worked out of her kitchen and dining-room, but last year an extension was added to the back of their house at the corner of Dewdney Avenue and Cariboo Highway for a small storefront.Lawrence nearly sold out of flowers that first Mother’s Day, and she says that the support from the community has been incredible. “It was a great initial reception, and I have the best customers. It was all by word of mouth and Facebook.”The business has since expanded beyond Clinton, with Lawrence delivering orders to Cache Creek and Ashcroft.“My end goal is to have ... https://www.100milefreepress.net/news/bloomin-good-clinton-florist-business-is-awards-finalist/
