Ugandan incident prompts concern for flower farm workers - The Killeen Daily Herald
Tuesday, December 13, 2016For many, the basic pay is less than $50 a month, according to FIDA Uganda."This is real daylight slavery," said Eunice Musiime, the head of Akina Mama wa Afrika, a women's rights group based in Uganda.Horticulture is big business in some African countries, providing substantial exports and tax revenue. In neighboring Kenya, where there have been similar concerns about the safety of workers in flower farms, exports rose from 86,480 tons in 2006 to 136,601 tons in 2014, making Kenya one of the top exporters to the European Union. Flower exports earned Kenya more than $500 million last year, according to government statistics. Uganda does not have up to date statistics for the value of its flower exports, which go primarily to European markets.© 2016 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Our trail continues climbing through forest before, then skirts a meadow often studded with avalanche lilies above pretty Eunice Lake. Love blooms year-round at Stamford florist - The Advocate
Sunday, February 28, 2021Cluceru.The ceremony took place, not in a cathedral or a temple or on a beach in Acapulco, but inside a flower shop in Stamford, just blocks away from the Government Center. Cluceru is also a florist, and conducting weddings in-store is just another part of her business, like selling roses and arranging bouquets. Except that Cluceru, who has owned Nobu Florist with her husband for over 20 years, doesn't quite see it that way. In the two years since she's been officiating weddings at Nobu, it hasn't necessarily boosted her sales of flowers, although brides-to-be often find her through wedding websites and blogs. Some of the clients who marry in her shop do purchase their flowers for the occasion from Nobu, but many don't. Some even bring their own with them. "I love it," Cluceru said. "Every single wedding I do, I almost cry, even though I've said it a million times." Many of the ceremonies performed at Nobu are arranged at the last minute, for a variety of reasons, whether personal or political, Cluceru said. While performing the ceremony, Cluceru choses words that emphasize the importance of respect, integrity, honor and equality in marriage. She has just one piece of advice: it's better not to get married on Val... https://www.stamfordadvocate.com/news/article/Love-blooms-year-round-at-Stamford-florist-5233785.php
Livingston Mother and Daughter Spread Love with Anonymous Bouquets - TAPinto.net
Sunday, February 28, 2021After purchasing the flowers from a Livingston-based florist, Leena designs the arrangements—occasionally with the assistance of her boyfriend. Prior to surprising people with mystery flower arrangements, Sanborn and her daughter have also been known to write anonymous inspirational notes to leave on random windshields throughout town and assemble gift bags for New York City’s homeless population. For a few years, Sanborn set up a blow-up couch on the sidewalks of Manhattan offering “free advice” to passerby. Today, Sanborn displays a “free advice” bumper sticker on her vehicle accompanied by her phone number. As an inspirational guidance coach for her own business, Sanborn aims to “help people rediscover their true purpose and give them tools to live a happier, healthier life.”Noting that she had a life-altering realization when she turned 41, Sanborn said that “everything about life and love and contribution" suddenly became very clear to her.“I believe that we all spend a lot of time doing for ourselves when we are younger—not knowing that true happiness comes from giving, not receiving," she said. “Giving to others doesn’t have to cost anything. You can offer someone a smile, or a hello, or just pray for them. When you practice giving to others in this way, your own life magically transforms.” Sanborn recalled that despite not having a great deal of money, her father was always a very generous tipper. She specifically reflected on a moment in the 1990s when her father presented $50 to a homeless man, who she remembers jumping up and down and laughing at the stranger’s generosity.“My dad taught me if someone asks you for something and you can help, by all means, help,” she said. “If you are not feeling happy these days, the fastest way to feel better is to do something nice for someone else. One step further: make it anonymous.” Community members are invited to assist in Sanborn’s endeavor by donating flowers, vases, ribbons or gift cards to local florists or by making a monetary contribution. To donate or to place an order, contact Sanborn at more.alignment@yahoo.com or 856-397-7879.Don’t miss important news in Livingston. Especially Yours Florist to Celebrate 20 Years in Kenilworth - TAPinto.net
Sunday, February 28, 2021KENILWORTH, NJ - Twenty years ago, on October 7, Especially Yours Florist opened its doors. Since that day this local florist shop has been a staple in the Kenilworth community creating flower arrangements and floral gifts for numerous occasions and celebrations. Owner Cindy Baker Southern spoke to TAPinto Kenilworth to tell her story how it all began.Starting a business 20 years ago was the scariest thing I have ever done. Not sure of what would be ahead of me, I was positive I would give it my all. My first year open brought challenges I did not expect. My sister Jaye Shear found out she had breast cancer and would leave working with me. I hired a driver, Sharon Iscaro to help out, and nineteen years later we are still together. She became shop help, a designer, and my friend. We went through the tragedy of 9-11, and helped raise money for the first responders, and then we had a fire in the front of the shop! Having gone through a tough first year, I realize none of it mattered if we didn’t giv... https://www.tapinto.net/articles/especially-yours-florist-to-celebrate-20-years-in-kenilworth
