Plant sales are a great way to stock your garden for the spring and summer shade.Held by local nonprofits like garden clubs and community groups, these annual sales offer great deals on a big variety of plants, from food crops to perennials, shrubs to trees. Many of the plants are propagated by members of the group and some are dug up from their own gardens.There is something going on every weekend. Here’s a list to clip and save of sales coming up.Santa Rosa Junior College: Horticulture students propagate the plants for monthly sales. Next up is Tuesday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. There will be another sale May 7 at the school’s open house called “Day Under the Oaks,” 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sales are located in the Lark Hall Greenhouse next to the planetarium.Willowside School: Students help out in the school’s own nursery, which offers thousands of plants, many donated. Look for low-water and drought-tolerant perennials, California natives, a multitude of succulents, grasses, salvias and plants that attract beneficial insects. She cautioned not to give these plants too much sunlight.Changing dull-looking plant pots can easily be accomplished with the use of insulated basket jackets adorned in holiday colors and patterns.Carson’s son, Kyle, assistant kitchen manager at Little Rock’s Outback Steakhouse, prepared food. Kyle is a graduate of the Culinary Institute and also boasts a catering service.The menu for the day began with an appetizer, pate on toast points accompanied by cranberry Brie bites.The main course followed, featuring rolled pork loin stuffed with cranberry dressing, sweet potatoes au gratin with goat cheese and oven-roasted Brussels sprouts.Desserts was chocolate bread pudding drizzled with whiskey sauce.Attendees were emailed recipes for the day’s menu. The dessert recipe:Chocolate bread pudding with whiskey sauce:Ingredients: 1 qt. heavy cream, 12 egg yolks, 1 cup sugar, 1 tbsp. vanilla, 1 pound bag of chocolate chips (semi-sweet or dark), 1/3 cup whiskey or rum, 1 loaf day-old bread.Cube bread and place in a greased casserole dish. Cream egg yolks and sugar. Bring whipping cream to a low boil. To prevent scrambling eggs, temper a bit of the egg mixture in the cream and mix thoroughly. Stir in chocolate chips. Pour mix over the bread and bake at 300 degrees for 1 to 1-1/2 hours or until lightly browned.Whiskey sauce: 1/2 cup whiskey, 1-1/2 cups sugar, 1/2 cup heavy cream. Mix together and stir over low heat until sugar dissolves; add cream and cook until well blended. Valley Florist and Greenhouse in East Templeton has received a $10,000 small business loan from the North Central Massachusetts Development Corp., the Fitchburg organization announced Friday.Brendan Loughman, owner of the company, received the loan, with funds earmarked for startup costs and inventory.Loughman has an advanced certification in floral design, as well as years of experience as a floral designer, according to a NCMDC press release. The Magnolia Avenue Airstream will be open until Thursday. On Saturday, the Camp Bowie space will be open from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
