Richards/Abilene Reporter-News)Buy PhotoWhat eighth-grade girl falls in love with lifting weights? Well, Tatiana Flowers did, and it’s no surprise for an individual who prefers the path less taken.“I don’t like going for things that are really simple and easy,” the Cooper junior said. “I like a challenge, so that’s what I go for.”So, when Flowers’ coaches in eighth grade suggested she start powerlifting, Flowers decided to give it a try. After all, it was something different.“My coaches convinced me to do it because they knew I liked to lift and they knew I would be good at it,” Flowers said. “I didn’t think I would be good at it. I just kind of went for it, and I’ve been doing it ever since.”Flowers, now in her third year with the Cooper girls powerlifting team, has, indeed, proven to be good at it. She became the first Cooper girl to win a region powerlifting title when she won the 148-pound weight class at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Associations’ Region I Division I meet on March 4 in Levelland.“I was really, really shocked, to be honest,” Flowe... http://www.reporternews.com/story/sports/high-school/2017/03/16/coopers-flowers-blooms-girls-powerlifting-team/99243862/
Abilene baker creates bacon bouquet for Valentine's Day - KTXS
Tuesday, March 14, 2017ABILENE, Texas - Forget the flowers, stuff the sweets, and can the cards; one Abilene family has [un]officially won Valentine's Day with a bouquet made of bacon. That's right--these roses smell like sizzlin' swine.Sheri Bell owns Bella's Bakery and got the idea for the "Beauquet" on the internet. She and her daughters wanted to make something special for her husband, Brent, for the holiday beyond the typical sweets. She has a process in place that's reminiscent of an assembly line as she makes them in her own home, which happens to be about a block north of Bacon Drive in north Abilene. She rolls the strips of bacon into the base shape and then cuts them to create petals. She cooks them in the oven--presumably to not also give high cholesterol for the holiday--and then affixes them to a fake rose stalk. And now Bell, who shared her secret to men's hearts across the South, has received orders from other couples in the city who want bacon bouquets as well. One woman, Bell said, had to place... http://www.ktxs.com/news/abilene-baker-creates-bacon-bouquet-for-valentines-day/332332452

Optimists learn about the flower business - Abilene Recorder Chronicle
Tuesday, January 17, 2017Photo providedThe guest speaker at the Dec. 21 meeting of the Abilene Optimist Club was Kylie Lee, a primary employee of The Flower Box. Kylie is the daughter of John and Donna Berger, owners of the business. She related much history about the business. She said her dad had been involved in the flower business for over 40 years. She mentioned you don’t have to have a horticulture degree or know all the different flowers to go into the business. You just need to be somewhat artistic and be imaginative. Her dad learned the trade by hands-on experience working several years at the former Olsen Floral Shop. Kylie said their biggest days naturally are Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, but every holiday it picks up. They have also handled many huge weddings and funerals. Their biggest fresh flower suppliers are out of Wichita, Topeka and Colorado. http://www.abilene-rc.com/news/optimists-learn-about-the-flower-business/image_41df6f0c-cd0d-11e6-8224-733c809da6a1.html

Pandemic impacts flower supplies ahead of Mother's Day - KSHB
Friday, May 29, 2020KANSAS CITY, Mo. — This Sunday marks Mother's Day, and it's not too late to order flowers for the moms in your life. However, you may not get exactly what you want.Like many things these days, it stems from the COVID-19 pandemic.Cheryl White, owner of The Fiddly Fig on Holmes, explained the impact on her supply chain."A lot of flowers come from all over the world, usually flown in. There's no flights or very few flights, and the flowers can't get here," she said. The Fiddly Fig just reopened after a four-week closure. The business has a limited crew working staggered shifts to get orders ready for Mother's Day. White posted a disclaimer on her site to let customers know flower choices are limited this year."We'll do our very best to make sure it looks like the picture," she said. Most major online services have existing substitution policies allowing florists to change colors or flower varieties in arrangements. Teleflora's website currently says that "due to flower supply challenges, ou... https://www.kshb.com/news/coronavirus/pandemic-impacts-flower-supplies-ahead-of-mothers-day
