Here’s your guide to preserving and crafting with flowers straight from your garden - OregonLive
Wednesday, March 31, 2021Hillsboro, Eliades said having this business during the pandemic has helped her to push her creative boundaries.Anyone can craft with plants, however, and florist Jeremi Carroll and farmer John Peterson said a good place to start is just by looking around your garden.“See what you have. What aesthetic do you want? What are you trying to build?” Peterson said. “See what textures you might want to incorporate into whatever you’re making.”Owners of Pollinate Flowers in Newberg, Carroll and Peterson started a dry flower program at their shop last year. They create arrangements and wreaths made from flowers they grow and dry on their farm, and even sell wreath kits at their retail shop.Carroll said that you can dry anything, but some flowers are just naturally easier to work with than others. Roses, yarrow, statice, Gomphrena, amaranth, marigold, hydrangea, grass seed heads, feverfew, celosia and strawflower are all varieties that are considered dry when they’re alive, he said, so they will dry easily and hold their shape well.“They already have a crispy texture to petals, so when they dry they don’t change structure or color,” he explained.24Dried flower craftsThere are multiple ways to dry flowers, but the three most common methods are hanging upside down, using silica gel and pressing. Carroll said the traditional way is to bunch flowers together and hang them upside down in a dry and dark space. He recommended drying them in the house away from a window, where humidity is low. That method works for many flowers and grasses, but for daisy-like flowers, such as black-eyed Susans, drying works better with the petals and center of flower drying face-up, Carroll said. When they hang, the gravity will close up the petals around the center, so Carroll recommended drying those flat with either a ... https://www.oregonlive.com/hg/2021/03/heres-your-guide-to-preserving-and-crafting-with-flowers-straight-from-your-garden.html

Pumas duo score 22 points in victory over Flowers in Summer Madness play - The Prince George's Sentinel
Tuesday, June 25, 2019My mindset is just to destroy whoever is in front of me, get my teammates motivated and make everyone around me better.”After transferring from Archbishop Carroll High School this summer, Thomas is set to become the new face of the Pumas. The rising sophomore said it has been a good adjustment so far with summer league play allowing him to get together with his new teammates and coaches.Thomas arrives with much fanfare, playing with Team Loaded D.C. in the AAU circuit and the amount of college offers he has already received.June 16, 2019: Wise Trey Thomas goes for a layup during Summer Madness Basketball League action between CH Flowers HS and Wise HS in Largo, Maryland. Photos by Chris Thompkins/Prince Georges SentinelAccording to the transfer, he already has two scholarship offers from Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and Rhode Island University with other schools expressing interest. However, Thomas said he does not allow it to get to his head and is focused on finding ways to get to bond his new teammates.“I just like to play,” said Thomas. “But I try to find a way to bond with the team off the court, like we got group chats, FaceTime each other, and we play video games together. Just the little things like that help. I like my teammates and my coaching staff, they let me hoop and that’s all I really have to do.”The second half featured much of the same rhythm with Wise taking charge. Frager continued to orchestrate the offense, pushing the ball in transition for easy buckets and made big defensive plays of his end.Meanwhile, Flowers attempted a comeback but Brooks could not convert many of his shots during the second half. Jase Mosley, a rising sophomore for the Jaguars, tried to carry the load with two 3-pointers late in the contest, finishing with 10 points.Unfortunately, the Pumas’ lead was too much for their 4A rivals to handle during their summer league encounter. After finishing their first season with Head Coach Lou Wilson with 17 wins, the Pumas will be looking to surpass their third round exit in the state playoffs and become a contender in the 4A division.“I think we have the potential to be a real solid ball club,” said DeBerry. “I think a lot is going to depend on how we progress from this point going forward. The season is a long way ahead, a lot of things can happen, good or bad but I like where we are right now as a team.” Post Views: 264 ... https://pgs.thesentinel.com/2019/06/19/pumas-duo-score-22-points-in-victory-over-flowers-in-summer-madness-play/

Wednesday, December 02, 2020Sugar Flower was gaining momentum when the coronavirus pandemic hit Iowa. Smith’s work-from-home model proved an unexpected advantage.“I was just getting started out to begin with, and having a low overhead I didn’t have any employees to furlough,” she said. “It was disappointing, but I tried to work with my customers. I don’t have to worry about rent and electric and things like that. So it has worked in my favor, which sounds kind of funny.”Smith’s home and studio escaped serious damage in the Aug. 10 derecho, which brought its own wave of cancellations. She hopes for a return to something like normal next year.“I really hope people start planning big weddings and they’re celebrating,” she said. “I hope that’s where the future lies.”Know a small business in the Corridor that might make for an interesting “My Biz” feature?
