CLICK HERE FOR MORE.FOX13's Lauren Coleman chose Mason’s Florist, one of the oldest Black-owned flower shops in Memphis.Tucked in the 3100 Block of Park Avenue in East Memphis is a flower shop, but it’s not just any shop.Mason’s Florist is one of the oldest Black-owned flower shops in the Mid-South.“We are a full-service flower shop,” designer and driver Patricia Williams said.“We do flowers for all occasions: funerals, weddings, get-well, anniversaries. We are just all-around florists.”From eight in the morning to five in the evening, the family is hard at work pumping out on average more than 200 orders a week.“We work as a team, and we know that we are here to offer a service,” Williams said.“We get our orders together, and everybody knows whatever their role is.”The shop opened in June of 1977 and has been in the family for more than 40 years.The store now sits in its third location.“My mom worked for Newman Florist on Lamar for many years,” Williams explained.“She envisioned having her own business, and she started out down on Park in that little strip mall. Wednesday, March 31, 2021High School and after getting married, moved to Lewes. Ms. Layton enjoyed being a homemaker and embarked on a career in floral design working for McNichol Place, and then spent many years at Windsors Florist. Later in life she enjoyed working with extended family at Millmans Hardware, and there she was able to showcase one of her many talents - wood crafts. Lorraine had a lifetime passion for crafts, art, drawing, and woodworking. She was generous and kind and loved to make Christmas ornaments, wooden toys and decorations, and other intricate handmade crafts for friends and family. When she wasn't busy working and crafting, Ms. Layton was spending time with those she loved most. Lorraine was a dear friend to all, and a wonderful loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to many. In addition to her parents, Ms. Layton was preceded in death by her son, Wayne Layton. She is survived by her son, Eddie Layton (Beverly) of Lewes; her daughter, Jeanne M. Fischer of Lewes; her son, Richard Layton of Lewes; her daughter, Judy Bundick (Lee) of Lewes; and her numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. All services will be private. Arrangements have been entrusted to Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes. Wednesday, March 31, 2021BOULDER, Colo. — Flowers arrangements and roses are moving fast at Boulder Gardens Florist as people pay their respects for the lives lost in the King Soopers mass shooing in Boulder Monday.Joshua Dusk is a florist at Boulder Gardens Florist. He’s been there for about a year but has 22 years of experience. He moves quickly with each arrangement, but behind every perfectly placed flower, there is intention.“You know, you can’t take it [the pain] away, but I get to be in a position where I can help that healing process with creative energy,” Dusk said. “I like using different colors to heal.”Calls have been pouring into Boulder Gardens Florist for arrangements and deliveries to the police departments, the memorial and the families of the victims.Heidi Lunsford, an employee at the flower shop, says flowers help people showcase their support and cope with the tragic loss at a time when many feel helpless.Aaron Pilling dropped by the shop and picked up ten red roses — one for each victim — and two bouquets of flowers. Wednesday, March 31, 2021I can’t wait to gain more over time.”Born in Syracuse, Rae moved to southern California with her mother at the age of four, returning to CNY each year to visit family and friends.The florist discovered her interest in design at the age of 20 while working at a beachside hotel in California.“We would receive a beautiful floral arrangement for the lobby weekly, and something just clicked in me that designing was something I wanted to pursue,” she said. “From there I traveled to LA and San Francisco, taking course after course on designing and also working in shops and design studios. Wednesday, March 31, 2021Country in Bloom, a floral shop and home decor store, which opened in November. Owner Karlee Smith previously worked in the wedding industry as a wedding coordinator and florist. Her intention was to have a pop-up shop for two months to test the waters, but with 95 per cent of its Christmas stock sold, her customers have given her the support to press forward for another six months. “I was super-nervous to open. We didn’t know what restrictions would come, when they would happen, or when things would change, so it was extremely nerve-wracking,” Smith told The News. “But I thought amidst the pandemic, why not take the plunge? I thought, let’s take a chance and see where I can go from here.” Her business partner is her mother-in-law, Sandra Lavorato Hipkin, who comes with the local fame of running Mulberry Manor, a home-based giftware and home decor business that was set up in her basement in the rural county.
