Please don't forget the reasons for Decoration Day and Memorial Day - Kingsport Times News
Tuesday, May 21, 2019But as I’ve covered Memorial Day ceremonies over the years, I’ve often heard U.S. military veterans remind crowds that Memorial Day is a solemn day of remembrance .... It’s not about cookouts and boating. It is to honor and remember those American soldiers who died while serving their country.According to multiple sources, Memorial Day grew out of Decoration Day in the 1860s shortly after the Civil War, as communities held ceremonies to honor the war dead and place flowers on their graves. By 1900, May 30 was recognized as Memorial Day by state legislatures across the nation. After World War, I the day was expanded to honor those who have died in all American wars. In 1968, Congress declared the last Monday in May as Memorial Day.So next weekend have fun, but don’t forget the true meaning of Memorial Day. And when it’s “Decoration” where your people are buried, go visit and take a few stick flowers (and don’t forget your camera). In any case, Saturday night is always a good time to go to the Fold.J.H. Wedding in a gym: Las Cruces couple married at Crunch Fitness share story of love, recovery - El Paso Times
Tuesday, April 16, 2019Daniel and Andi say they do have those goals — the couple has lost a combined 50 pounds since joining the gym when it first opened in May 2018 — they're also dedicated to their workouts for other reasons. They've both struggled in the past with drug and alcohol addiction. They're sober now, and they say the gym has come to play a central role in helping them to maintain their recovery. When stress levels rise and the temptation to return to former habits strikes, they go to the gym for hard-hitting workouts. In addition, because they have offset daily schedules, it's a rare chance each day to spend time together. The gym has childcare available, so they're able to dedicate the time to exercise without worrying about their 4-year-old son, Liam. "Our quality of life has improved since going to the gym," Andi said. "We used to not spend time together. But since the gym opened, we spend a lot of time together." Popping the question Andi and Daniel have been together about five years. At Christmas last year, it was Andi — with the help of Liam — who sprang the big question. She gave Daniel a Denver Broncos mug. Inside was a small box. "I opened one of my gifts, and it was a ring," said Daniel, during a midday break from his job at Auto Doctors, a small mechanic shop on Española Street. Daniel, too, had been planning to ask Andi to marry him. But he said he'd been trying to develop an elaborate plan for a flashy proposal that hadn't happened yet. Soon, the two were contemplating their options for hosting a wedding. That's when Crunch Fitness general Manager Keith Smith entered the picture. He found out they were engaged and put forward a proposal of his own: That Daniel and Andi should get married at Crunch's facility, 320 E. Wyatt Drive. 'We all started brainstorming' The couple said Smith had been considering offering a wedding giveaway, but when he learned two of the gym's own members were recently engaged, he sought approval for them to be the recipients. "It started off as a notion or vague idea; then we all started brainstorming," Smith said. "The end result was really nice." Andi said she and Daniel were "stoked when they asked us to be the couple" awarded t... https://www.elpasotimes.com/story/news/2019/03/04/wedding-gym-las-cruces-nm-couple-married-crunch-fitness/3055027002/
Can flowers live through a pandemic? | Herald Community Newspapers - liherald.com
Sunday, January 17, 2021By Alexandra Whitbeck Flowers only last for so long after being cut. The inventories of some local florists, including those in Baldwin, Freeport and Oceanside, were greatly affected when shops were forced to close in late March because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Roses, lilies and daisies tend to live longer than hyacinths, tulips and lilacs, however, the maximum lifespan of cut flowers is still about a week with maximum care. Since Phase One of New York’s reopening plan began May 27, florists were able to open in a limited manner with hopes of restocking as much as possible. Face masks and a limited capacity were requirements made by New York State that Imperial Florist in Baldwin, Flowers by Mike in Oceanside and Duryea’s Flower Shop in Freeport are all following in order to continue peddling petals. Ann Marie Pierce at Imperial Florist in Baldwin has been operating her shop with only one in-store employee and one delivery driver since late May, accepting curbside and delivery orders. According to Pierce, for “at least six weeks we didn’t work at all.” Imperial Floris... https://www.liherald.com/merrick/stories/can-flowers-live-through-a-pandemic,126506

Sunday, January 17, 2021TRIBUTES have been paid to a much-loved former Largs florist after he passed away at the age of 74. Stuart Kennedy, who served the town for decades as owner of S Kennedy Florist, was also a retained firefighter locally for 12 years and one of the founding members of the Viking Festival. Born in a tenement in Glasgow, Stuart was the eldest child of Willie and Betty Kennedy and brother to Alan, Marion and Jeanne. After school, Stuart went to work as a fruit and veg buyer and soon rose up the ranks to become one of the youngest members of the executive staff at the Malcolm Campbell's where he worked. It was while employed there Stuart met wife-to-be Liz, a florist, at a staff dance. On November 1 1969 the couple married at Mossvale Church in Paisley - and in 2019 celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Both Stuart and Liz were blessed with the birth of daughter Elaine in 1972 and in 1974 the family was complete after the birth of son David. Florist Starts ‘Flowers for Black Men' After George Floyd's Death, Sharing Random Kindness - NBC Southern California
Sunday, January 17, 2021She got even more famous after appearing on the HBO show "Insecure." All because, she says, she wanted to stay true to who she is, and where she lives."When you see a florist that looks like you and represents you I think that representation is so important," Brown said. After working in digital marketing, Brown decided it wasn’t for her. She wanted to get out of the office. She wanted to do something with her hands. Then came the idea of flowers. Her popularity grew as she posted with her flowers at familiar local spots. Soon, she was doing pop ups at places like Hilltop Coffee.Last summer, she took it a step further. Realizing that the killing of George Floyd and the protests that erupted had particular resonance for one group of people. So she started “flowers for Black men,” encouraging friends and followers to send bouquets to many who weren’t expecting them."And they automatically assumed I got the wrong address or it was for their wife or something like that and I said, 'Oh no this is for you." And they’re like, 'me? What?'" she said. As the world watched the breach of the U.S. Capitol in shock, many couldn’t help but wonder why the underwhelming police response to President Trump’s rioting supporters was so different from the massive show of force seen this summer at a Washington D.C. Black Lives Matter protest following the death of George Floyd. Include your florist in planning - Powell Tribune
Sunday, January 17, 2021Other holidays, too can impact the cost of the blooms; rose prices are often more volatile around Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day.The second step, as important as the first, is finding your wedding florist. Communicating with your florist is paramount because when they understand what you want, it is far easier to accomplish the look you are seeking. To make a selection, check out previous work the business has done and read their reviews. Like most businesses, florists have specialities and a style all their own. “We like to have a month’s notice,” said Kerri Kolb, from Rayven’s Flowers and Gifts in Powell. She said some of the farms that sent flowers to her suppliers had stopped production during COVID lockdowns, so some particular species might need to be changed a bit. When you are researching everything else, take note of arrangements you like on wedding sites, Pintrest. Take photos of those to your florist while remaining flexible and allowing the florist to guide you. Try and be familiar with popular wedding flowers, and decide if you want them to be just beautiful or fragrant as well. Kolb said she really likes to see the photos brides have selected.“I always tell them to bring in the pictures, like if they use Pintrest. Then we work from that, within their budget,” Kolb said. Drawing on your wedding colors to develop the theme of your floral arrangements can help narrow down the overwhelming number of choices. Not all flowers come in all colors, eliminating some options.Remember the bride’s bouquet sets the tone for the other flower arrangements, and will appear in the photos. The attendants’ flowers should incorporate some of the same flowers, to create a pulled together look. Trends in th... https://www.powelltribune.com/stories/include-your-florist-in-planning,28880
