Wednesday, October 28, 2020Akeem Glaspie Indianapolis StarDawn Sheets never hesitated to help a friend in need.Sheets, a lifelong florist, had no formal medical training, but when her friend Maxine Hessong needed kidney dialysis treatment, Sheets taught herself how to operate a dialysis machine so Hessong’s husband Dale could continue working.For more than a year, Sheets made three to four trips a week to Methodist Hospital to care for her friend, offering support and companionship during Hessong’s procedures. Eventually Hessong came home, and Sheets continued to run her machine, even showing Dale the necessary steps in the process. “She cared about people,” daughter Lori Arment said. “She cared about people’s feelings and their well being.”“That’s one of the highlights of her life to be able to help in that way at that time,” daughter Cathy Hiatt said.Helping others, faith and family were the pillars of Sheets' life. Wednesday, October 28, 2020Hamilton County, but until recently a big part of her business came from handling floral arrangements for large gatherings.JP Parker’s new floral truck.“I did love the (Indianapolis) shop, but it just didn’t make business sense in this climate,” Parker said.The South Meridian Street shop, which occupies 2,000 square feet, opened in 2008. The lease for that space expires at the end of the month, which is another reason Parker decided to close that shop now.She said she intends to re-establish a presence of some sort in the Stadium Village neighborhood because she loves the neighborhood and wants to have a convenient spot to meet with clients once Indianapolis’ tourism and events business gets back on track. But exactly where that location might be and when it might open is unknown.“When will the crowds come back, and how will we be doing business in the future?” Parker said. “You can talk to any vendor that’s in the events business and they’re having to go to Plan B.”For JP Parker Flowers, part of that Plan B involves a newly acquired floral truck named Flora.The truck will operate similar to a food truck, giving the business a mobile option for reaching customers. JP Parker Flowers could, for instance, use the truck as a pop-up retail location where customers could walk up and buy a bouquet. Or, a client might hire the truck to distribute flowers for a retail store’s grand opening or other event.“It’s actually been a long-time dream of mine to have a flower truck” Parker said. “It’s a very fun, trendy thing to do right now.”In other news this week:— Fast-casual seafood chain Slapfish opens Monday at 345 Massachusetts Ave. The restaurant takes the space formerly occupied by Louie’s Wine Dive, which closed in March.Franchisees are long-time friends Mark Weghorst and Nick Smith. Hoover-Fisher Florists to Move from Four Corners to Kensington - Source of the Spring
Sunday, February 28, 2021Hoover-Fisher Florists, a Four Corners mainstay since the 1960s, will move to a new location in Kensington in January, 2021, according to an email to customers.The family-owned retailer was founded in 1954 and later moved into a two-story addition to the Woodmoor Shopping Center at the intersection of Colesville Road and University Boulevard.The company is owned and operated by Bill Fisher, the second-generation owner, with two of his children, Allie Salkeld and Mason Fisher, also part of the business.The new location will be at 4100 Howard Ave. in Kensington, which is currently under renovation. It will offer private parking and additional room for expansion, according to the announcement, which also is posted on the company’s Facebook page.The florist will continue to offer same-day delivery to the same areas of Maryland, Washington D.C and northern Virginia. Since that day this local florist shop has been a staple in the Kenilworth community creating flower arrangements and floral gifts for numerous occasions and celebrations. Owner Cindy Baker Southern spoke to TAPinto Kenilworth to tell her story how it all began.Starting a business 20 years ago was the scariest thing I have ever done. Not sure of what would be ahead of me, I was positive I would give it my all. My first year open brought challenges I did not expect. My sister Jaye Shear found out she had breast cancer and would leave working with me. I hired a driver, Sharon Iscaro to help out, and nineteen years later we are still together. Sunday, February 28, 2021With the pandemic causing in-person events for spring to be canceled, local florists had to adjust to running a business without depending on the income from graduations and weddings. Luckily, curbside pickup and delivery options have made many florists able to adapt along the way. Rose and Blossom, run by Terri O'Connor for the last 28 years, recently moved to a new location in the Spokane Valley. She says in a typical wedding season Rose and Blossom would cater to 250 or more weddings. The pandemic has pushed all the late-spring weddings until at least September or October, and this definitely put a dent in typical flower sales. "I'm not putting too many eggs in my basket for this year," O'Connor says, but she also acknowledges how their everyday floral designs will be an important component in pulling them through this season. One of the best ways for customers to support local florists, O'Connor says, is to spread the word about businesses you like, including by writing reviews online. North Spokane floral and gift shop Ritters has also been offering curbside pickup and delivery. Kirsten Wyman, the head of Ritters' social media accounts, has been working hard to promote every plant the company receives and show a deeper look into the plant company's daily orders. They also worked to get more creative with their online sales. With sales dipping dramatically this spring for fresh-cut flowers, Ritters decided to close its fresh-cut flower shop for good; however, it kept open all other aspects of its business. "It wasn't an easy decision by any means, but it's a perishable item," says Denice Thompson, the company's manager.
