Wednesday, March 31, 2021I can’t wait to gain more over time.”Born in Syracuse, Rae moved to southern California with her mother at the age of four, returning to CNY each year to visit family and friends.The florist discovered her interest in design at the age of 20 while working at a beachside hotel in California.“We would receive a beautiful floral arrangement for the lobby weekly, and something just clicked in me that designing was something I wanted to pursue,” she said. “From there I traveled to LA and San Francisco, taking course after course on designing and also working in shops and design studios. In addition to being a Sweetwater florist, she handles the market’s social media channels, including Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.“We built this business from the ground up and seeing it come to life is mesmerizing,” Izzy Cline said. “As a young woman working for a woman-owned business it feels powerful ... I am my mom’s biggest fan and there is absolutely nothing she can’t do.”Christy Metz, Sweetwater’s head florist and creative director, echoed the same sentiments as Cline’s daughters.“She has really great relationships and cares about everybody, and that just comes across,” Metz said of Cline. “She’s also great at delegating and finding out peoples’ strengths and using those to build a strong team.”Metz, 57, was a florist in Chicago for over a decade before returning to her hometown a few years ago. Owner Karlee Smith previously worked in the wedding industry as a wedding coordinator and florist. Her intention was to have a pop-up shop for two months to test the waters, but with 95 per cent of its Christmas stock sold, her customers have given her the support to press forward for another six months. “I was super-nervous to open. We didn’t know what restrictions would come, when they would happen, or when things would change, so it was extremely nerve-wracking,” Smith told The News. “But I thought amidst the pandemic, why not take the plunge? I thought, let’s take a chance and see where I can go from here.” Her business partner is her mother-in-law, Sandra Lavorato Hipkin, who comes with the local fame of running Mulberry Manor, a home-based giftware and home decor business that was set up in her basement in the rural county.
