Wilted sales: Nunan's Florist sees drop in money with road construction - Wicked Local GeorgetownThursday, October 22, 2015
FEMA grant, the Highway Department is replacing multiple culverts – large pipes used to carry water under roads – in the areas of Central Street along Route 97 and Thurlow Street near Groveland. The new culverts are designed to prevent flooding, which has become a huge issue in town during the winter as snow mounts and melts. There’s a detour down East Street to Pingree Farm Road, just before Nunan’s.In the meantime, frustrations have risen at Nunan’s, where autumn is a critical time of year for sales.“The fall’s a fairly busy time for us; we sell mums and pumpkins and other things,” Flynn said said.Customers have been irritated at times, too.“Sometimes they say it’s difficult to get past the roadblock, and other times they say it’s not a problem,” Flynn said. “So it all depends on who’s directing traffic.”On the side of the detour coming from downtown toward I-95, there is a small sign letting people know Nunan’s is open. But that’s about it.Georgetown Highway Department Director Peter Durkee said the repairs should be finished by next week.“Central street is coming along well,” Durkee said. “Both culverts are in the ground. There’s still some back-flowing we need to do, and they have to add one more section of pipe.”The other part of the project, which is on Thurlow Street, should be done even sooner, Durkee said.Flynn said he has had very little luck with town officials, because the construction is a federally-funded project on a state road. And even with the work Nunan’s does outside the farm – going to homes and businesses to deliver, plant and decorate – it’s become impossible to offset losses at the store.“We’re just kind of taking the hit right now,” Flynn said. They’ve also been throwing away mu... http://georgetown.wickedlocal.com/article/20151013/NEWS/151018701

Anne Dickson is working hard to bring joy to the residents of Pittsburgh with pop-up flower displays.Florists have been hard hit by the pandemic. With major events being canceled, a lot of work and profit has dried up. However, one Pittsburgh florist, Anne Dickson, has decided to put her skills and time to good use.Inspired by fellow florist, New Yorker Louis Miller, who’s been creating some stunning “flower flashes” to brighten up New York City, Dickson decided she wanted to spread some floral joy in her own community, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.She started by sharing her gratitude with health workers for all their hard work. So the owner of Fox and the Fleur florists went along to Shadyside’s Family House, where patients and their families can stay together. She brought some bright blooms to decorate the facade of the house with an impressive installation. She also tagged her work “F&F [Heart] Pittsburgh #flower power” in chalk on the sidewalk in front of the home, and added it to her Instagram account to spread a little more joy. From there Dickson created more imp... https://aleteia.org/2021/03/24/florist-brightens-her-city-with-gorgeous-floral-installations/
