'Virus gardens' sprout up across coastal Orange County for spring - Los Angeles Times
Monday, April 27, 2020Usually, 6-year-old Matthew Perez, who is autistic, isolates himself during family activities. But when his parents took his older siblings outside to their Costa Mesa backyard a couple of weeks ago to plant some tomatoes, peppers and flowers, he joined them.As the end of the stay-at-home order stretches farther away, residents in coastal Orange County have turned to nature — even as cities close off beaches and parks. The Perez family’s backyard recently became a welcome reprieve. They received a garden tray from Olga Parra, director of community development for the Wilson Street Learning Center. Rain prevented them from gardening for a few days, but as soon as the weather allowed, the family trooped outside. Siblings Kathy, 18, left, and Matthew Perez, 6, planted tomatoes, peppers and flowers in their Costa Mesa backyard.(Courtesy of Lety Perez) “It’s either our phones or watching TV,” said Lety Perez, 34, Matthew’s mother. “Having them to do something out of the ordinary … it’s pretty neat to watch them just have fun with it.”Since the planting day, the seedlings have flourished and the flowers have gr... https://www.latimes.com/socal/daily-pilot/news/story/2020-04-24/virus-gardens-sprout-up-across-coastal-orange-county-for-spring

Flower shop target of online harassment after Shinkle abstains from Michigan vote - Detroit Free Press
Wednesday, December 02, 2020Shinkle's Flower Shop and Greenhouse. Some left angry Google reviews about Shinkle abstaining from the certification vote. Of the 50 reviews left for the florist over three years, 17 were left in the past 48 hours, all one star. "Replaced my order with one the florist wanted, even though I did everything correctly. Said it was because I was black, from Detroit and didn't know what I was doing," one person wrote.Another wrote: "Just garbage. Can't be expected to follow the law. Do not trust."People left a handful of similar reviews on the Yelp page for the florist, all one star. A couple of people left comments misidentifying Shinkle as the owner."Norman is a traitor to democracy," a Yelp user wrote. "Perhaps you should buy your flowers at a shop that respects the democratic process and from a shop owner that does not try to invalidate thousands of votes from people of color."Their anger was misdirected, though, because the Temperance, Michigan, flower shop is owned by Shinkle's brother, Gary Shinkle. Norm Shinkle is a former state senator who practices law in Williamston, Michigan, about an hour and a half northwest of Temperance. Norm Shinkle does not have an ownership stake or any day-to-day role in the business, said Trevor Savage, Gary Shinkle’s son-in-law. Savage spoke to the Free Press Tuesday. Gary Shinkle’s children now help him and his wife run the shop. Norm Shinkle hasn’t been around the flower shop for decades, Savage said."We're watching false reviews pile up online, and it's frightening and upsetting that people would try to harm a family business from hundreds of miles away without even being clear on the facts," Savage said. "Cancel culture is really terrifying when you're in its crosshairs."Harassment continued after the meeting for the board's other Republican member, Van Langevelde. The far-right site The Gateway Pundit called him a "traitor" on Facebook.Monica Palmer, chairperson of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers, also spoke during the hours-long meeting and shared threats she experienced after the county board certified its election results last week. Palmer initially objected to certifying the results based on discrepancies between the number of ballots recorded and the number of ballots counted.Me... https://www.freep.com/story/news/politics/elections/2020/11/24/michigan-board-state-canvassers-shinkle/6401546002/

Wednesday, December 02, 2020Falls and opened the second Rose Petal location in the former Yoga Hive on Nucleus Avenue. Now with locations on the east and west sides of Glacier National Park, she’s featuring local retailers and florists as well as exotic plants that wouldn’t normally be found in rural areas. “Our goal is always to bring things to communities like Columbia Falls and Cut Bank that have more of an urban feel to them — brands you wouldn’t normally see in Montana — and then we try to do the same thing with our flowers,” Kavanagh said. “We like a more whimsical and more of a magical component than tight traditional arrangements.”Rose Petal Floral and Supply in Columbia Falls on Nov. 12, 2020. Hunter D’Antuono Flathead BeaconRose Petal’s hybrid of local and national brands includes larger names such as Rifle Paper Co. and PF Candle Co. and Montana brands like Windrift Hill. Folklore Coffee will also be moving into the shop with a pour-over bar, a service also provided in the Cut Bank shop. “We try to offer people an all-encompassing experience,” Kavanagh said. “You get to come in here, have a hot drink, shop around and we always like to keep the shop with lots of plants and flowers so it’s really lush and nice in here.”In addition to home décor, Kavanagh also keeps busy during the wedding season, working with local flower farmers including Flathead Farmworks in Kalispell. While the pandemic canceled many weddings this summer, Kavanagh says they kept busy with smaller last-minute weddings. She’s also preparing for a very busy wedding season in 2021. Rose Petal’s busy summers on the west side of the park, with weddings all over the Flathead and north to Eureka, were another reason Kavanagh wanted to open a second location.A floral arrangement at Rose Petal Floral and Supply in Columbia Falls on Nov. 12, 2020. Florists, symbols of hope, deemed "essential businesses" in virus-stricken Geneva - Famagusta Gazette
Wednesday, December 02, 2020Geneva entered semi-confinement on Nov. 2. All restaurants, bars and barbershops are now closed, but “essential” shops, such as grocery stores, supermarkets and flower shops, can remain open. Why are florists considered “essential businesses,” one may wonder?A recent survey conducted by JardinSuisse showed that although most of the celebrations and festivals have been canceled, 70 percent of the country’s florists said that their sales were better in the first half of 2020 than in the same period of last year.Migros, Switzerland’s largest supermarket chain, said that its flower sales in the first six months of this year were 20 percent higher than the previous year.Meanwhile, another recent survey conducted by PostFinance, the financial services unit of Swiss Post, found that Swiss consumers’ spending on clothing and footwear has fallen by 50 percent and some 80 percent, respectively, since the country adopted containment measures to fight the virus in March.“Flowers help people deal with the increased anxiety caused by confinement and show them the good side of life during the pandemic,” a flower shop owner in Geneva said.Immediately after the first lockdown measures were introduced in spring, a Swiss charity group began to distribute relief items every Saturday... http://famagusta-gazette.com/2020/11/19/florists-symbols-of-hope-deemed-essential-businesses-in-virus-stricken-geneva/
