Florist and plant lover wants to create more green spaces in the - News 12 Bronx
Saturday, January 18, 2020A Bronx florist and plant lover is making it his mission to create more green spaces and educate his neighbors about sustainability and urban agriculture.Christian Montero's passion for plants and flowers sprouted when he was very young with his grandmother. He says he likes expressing his feelings through flowers, growing his own food and educating his neighbors about it all. Montero is leading a mission to raise awareness and build communiy gardens to create a space for bees and monarch butterflies. "Concrete Jungle" is in efforts to grow fresh produce, beautify the Bronx and educate children and adults on sustainability. Montero says even the greenest borough needs more of these sacred spaces. Montero is finishing a nearly 50 pound floral installation that will be hanging from Wall Works on Saturday and he says it symbolizes the seed of this whole dream. Saturday, January 18, 2020Flowers of Point Loma at 2170 Chatsworth Blvd. is celebrating 35 years. The full-service florist shop now owned by Penn Bryan has lasted 35 years in Point Loma by customizing its business to meet its customers’ needs.“We were looking to find a flower stand to start out, and saw that the flower shop on the corner was up for sale,” said Bryan of how she and her husband acquired the business, Flowers of Point Loma, now at 2170 Chatsworth Blvd., from a retiring brother-sister team who’d had it since 1985.“I found my niche doing things that people wanted,” noted Bryan. “No other flower shops do what we do here.”The previous owners stayed with the Bryans for a year to help transition them into the floral business. Saturday, January 18, 2020It was one of those box-of-flowers deliveries. I doubt my boyfriend realized they would not arrive in a vase and arranged by a florist. Instead, they had been packed in a box, without water, with the vase packed alongside, delivered by a regular package courier. I usually send him a photo of my bouquet along with my heartfelt thanks, and while I thanked him as usual, I did not send a picture of the bouquet because I knew he would feel bad — both about the lackluster arrangement, and the money he had spent on them.I found what I believe was the intended arrangement on the website, and it was lovely — a far cry from what was delivered to me. I love my twice-a-year flowers (birthday and Christmas), and I don’t want to come across as critical or ungrateful. I am blessed to have such a thoughtful partner. If flowers were just a one-time gift, I would not even consider mentioning it. However, with Valentine’s Day (and another flower delivery) approaching, I wonder if I should let my boyfriend know that it might be better to use a local florist to ensure he is getting his money’s worth. "It can change somebody's whole day," said Owner of Frey Florist and Greenhouse Richard Espeut. "That's what we're trying to do - trying to change someone's day." Espeut and his team will be on Kennedy Plaza Wednesday morning handing out 400 stems of flowers - for free. "First people are skeptical of it," explained Espeut, who says they've been doing it the last four years. "And they say like, 'Well how much are they?' Or, 'I'm not buying these.' And we say 'No, no, no they're free.'" It's part of the Society of American Florists campaign to 'Petal' It Forward. Folks Wednesday will be handed two stems of flowers: one they're supposed to keep, and another they're supposed to give away. "This is a way to reach out to people that maybe no one ever gives them a flower," said Espeut. So what's the point? According to the Society of American Florists, it's to demonstrate research done at two universities that show flowers increase happiness and decrease stress. Flowers and Vessels @ Wildroot Floral - Buffalo Rising
Saturday, January 18, 2020Plants, Wildroot was not quite open. Up until a few hours ago, I had not actually paid a visit to Wildroot, though I had previously announced their arrival. The new shop, owned and operated by florist Kayla Grazen, is a breath of fresh air for lovers of cut flowers, floral arrangements, and… pots and vases! My mother could not believe the selection of beautiful vessels offered up by Wildroot. During the visit, she talked about her ongoing search in Buffalo for the perfect pairings. Not only did she discover at least half a dozen pots that she loved, she also pointed out that they were very affordable, which is unusual in a boutique floral shop. As if Daddy’s Plants wasn’t great enough, the addition of Wildroot creates a plant and floral emporium that is a real pleasure to browse and shop. While Daddy’s Plants specializes in a variety of potted plants, Grazen has mastered the floral element. She even has access to a giant refrigerator that once belonged to Bootleg Bucha. That means that she can create the floral arrangements for customers, and keep them chilled until they are picked up. Grazen told us that all of the arrangements inside the fridge were all custom orders. She also said that if she ever gets any free time, she will try to have some more floral arrangements available for customers who stop in on a whim.
