‘Master florist’ Haruko Adkins, 90, had a passion for flower arrangements and tennis - The Washington Post

Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I., Morhart said, the trip was a “thrill for her.” Born in Nagoya, Japan, Adkins studied the art of floral arrangement and earned a four-year degree as a “master florist,” her friends said. She married Earl A. Adkins, a criminal investigator in the U.S. Army Military Police Corps. With his work, the couple traveled and lived in several places, including San Francisco and Germany, before settling in Arlington. He died in 1999.Adkins had a large group of friends and was known for helping others. If someone else wanted flowers she planned to use in an arrangement, she would happily give them away, Morhart said.“She was very, very generous,” Morhart said. “She was always willing to say: ‘Help yourself. Take that if you need it.’ She had a very sharing nature.”Adkins also did volunteer projects, including making sweaters and bags to carry food for those in need. She was once named Volunteer of the Year at Goodwin House.Valerie Burke, the chief philanthropy officer at Goodwin House, said Adkins also enjoyed working at a thrift shop on the property as a volunteer and was good at making displays.“She loved getting to know people and helping them find just the right trinket,” Burke said. In the dining room at Goodwin House, Burke said, Adkins would help if she noticed others weren’t eating enough or needed a hand.“She’d say, ‘You’re losing too much weight,’?” Burke said. “Then she’d go over and help them eat. She was a real connector.”In early May, Adkins came down to meet her weekly flower-arranging group but said she couldn’t stay because she didn’t feel well. A few days later she went to the hospital and tested positive for the coronavirus, according to friends. Local Rose Challenge provides medical masks for China - Oxford Observer

To curb the spread of the virus, the Chinese government has been strongly suggesting, and in some cases making it mandatory for citizens to wear masks when they are outdoors.According to the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China, disposable medical masks are for self-protection. Citizens could wear them when they are in public and in densely populated places. Particle protective masks and medical protective masks like N95 are for medical staff providing emergency services, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The airborne virus can be spread through tiny droplets of moisture released when an infected person coughs or sneezes. There has been a surge in the demand for N95 masks since the coronavirus outbreak. It is widely believed the N95 masks can be effective in preventing infection. It can filter at least 95% of airborne particles. The National Health Commission in China said the discrepancy between the demand and supply of medical needs is still very prominent, especially in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, in Hubei Province. Xiaogan is a city of more than 4 million people, located in the northeast of Hubei Province. It is near Wuhan, where the outbreak is believed to have started. As of Thursday, 2,874 confirmed cases with 49 deaths had been reported in Xiaogan. After the Rose Challenge, the Miami Chinese Information Association will send out masks near Feb. 16. It is estimated it will take about five to seven days for them to reach XiaoGan First People’s Hospital, Ma said. “The reason we chose the XiaoGan First People’s Hospital is because it is a place with a severe epidemic in Wuhan, which is in urgent need of medical supplies, and (a friend of local association members) once donated a batch of masks to that hospital, and then knew the hospital’s responsible person, which can ensure our transportation transparency and safety,” Ma said.According to Chinese medical professionals, the surgical masks and protective masks are disposable items and cannot be reused. First-ever paper florist shop opens in downtown Milford - 47abc - WMDT

August 10, 2020 MILFORD, Del. – In Delaware, the first-ever paper florist shop on the east coast has officially opened its doors in downtown Milford. Cookie’s Paper Petals is now up and running where you’ll find specialized hand-cut paper petals crafted into some of your favorite flowers. Owner Anastasia Jackson tells 47 ABC she makes everything from sunflowers, to roses, hydrangea’s and more in all different shapes, sizes, and colors for clients. She says her creations can be used for home and party decor, birthdays, even weddings. Jackson says the shop is so unique it’s actually the only one like it in United States. And Jackson says she’s just happy to have found a craft that she loves that puts smiles on other people’s faces.“It just offer something different, there’s a lot of variety.
