Many of the pieces, such as a rusty wheelbarrow and spray-painted metal statues, are upcycled finds. Robertson has a simple philosophy when it comes to picking plants: “I want one of each,” she says with a laugh. There’s also a certain live-and-let-live component to her organically maintained sanctuary. “A lot of these things have placed themselves, and as long as they don’t annoy me, they’re fine,” she says of the multiple groundcovers.All of this means her garden is far from the perfectly manicured plots often seen on garden tours. But the way Robertson embraces the free-flowing and ever-changing landscape is in line with the BRING Home and Garden Tour’s focus on wabi-sabi, a Japanese philosophy that encourages people to find beauty in imperfection and impermanence. Nourishing compost BRING has long been an advocate for reuse and recycling, and “rot” (composting) is also important for maintaining a healthy planet — not to mention a healthy garden.To ensure they have plenty of high-quality compost, Robertson and husband Bud Jones have a pair of 4-foot by 8-foot worm bins they built from recycled decking. The Juneau Empire reported that Tommy Varela says Heavenly Creations in Ketchikan told his mother the business would not sell flowers for his August wedding ceremony after learning there were two grooms. Varela and a friend organized a rally June 5 outside the florist’s location on Ketchikan’s waterfront. Between 100 and 200 people attended the demonstration, holding signs expressing support for the LGBTQ community.
