Jen Linehan owns the flower shop Beautiful Blooms by Jen in Sylvania, which has already seen its fair share in wedding cancellations. "Brides are all calling to apologize, and I tell them it's not your fault, we'll do the best we can to reschedule," says Linehan. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, nursing homes are also closed to visitors. That's when Jen had the idea for "Blooms for the Blues" -- a special delivery rate to send a bud vase with some fresh blooms to lift the spirits of nursing home residents. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles County to start up the economy, allowing higher-at-risk workplaces, such as bookstores, clothing stores, sporting goods shops, florists and car dealership showrooms, to open once again but only for curbside pickup and delivery for phone and online orders. Newsom and the county issued guidelines for establishments to follow as they prepared to open, including that they must adhere to physical distancing and disinfecting protocols, provide face masks to workers, increase pickup and delivery services and post a checklist sign of compliance at the entrance of each facility. Among the local businesses that reopened Friday was florist shop Sunflorist in Canyon Country, which kept busy with Mother’s Day arrangement orders.“It’s crazy, crazy, crazy. We’re really thankful for the reopening and it’s just in time to thank all the mothers who are working right now during a very tragic time,” said store manager Kimo Hernandez.While curbside pickup service is in the works, the shop is currently offering non-contact deliveries, where drivers drop off arrangements at home porches, without the need of a signature, Hernandez said, adding that employees are also practicing up to 12 feet of distancing and delivery workers are using special racks for safer pickup arrangements. Peter Duff & Sons, an Englewood florist, was a member of the Florists Telegraph Delivery Association. The accompanying advertisement for Duff’s is dated to Valentine’s Day of 1933. Florists Telegraph Delivery Association—which still exists today under the familiar acronym FTD—became the country’s first flowers-by-wire service in 1910. It enabled a customer to order flowers by telegraph, using local florists in the recipient’s area to fulfill the order on the same day. Another interesting part of this ad is the old style of phone number: Englewood 3-7500. In those days, connecting to another person’s telephone required the help of an operator. Sunday, July 05, 2020Sarah Jackson was made redundant just a few weeks ago and she's already set up a business that's blossoming.The 45-year-old florist was working at a flower wholesaler in Manchester before the pandemic forced flower shops to close their doors. Now she's creating floral arrangements from the living room of her Congleton home and has more than 1,000 followers for the Facebook page she set up in mid-May. "It's just gone absolutely bonkers," she said. "I've got so many orders coming in that it can be hard to keep up with them all. I'm working out of my living room at the moment, but I've got a shed arriving next week to work from."
