Here is a list of Veterans Day events planned across Ventura County. Ponderosa Drive. A total of 15 veterans will be honored with music, readings and a pinning ceremony. Information: 642-0239.11 a.m.: American Legion Post 741 will host a ceremony and barbecue at 7 Veterans Way. Food will be free for veterans and their families.6 p.m.: All-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner at the Camarillo Moose Lodge Family Center, 341-A Arneill Road. Free for veterans, $7 for non-veterans.Moorpark8 a.m.: Flag display will begin at the Veterans Memorial Triangle, corner of Moorpark and Los Angeles avenues.10 a.m.: Moorpark Veterans Memorial, Spring Road and Flinn Avenue.Ojai7 a.m.: Ojai American Legion Auxiliary Unit 482 will serve a free breakfast for veterans at 843 E. Ojai Ave. Lunch with a variety of soups will be served from noon to 4:30 p.m. with free desserts.Oxnard8 a.m.: Veterans Day ceremony at El Rio's Roger Jones Community Center, 2864 Jourdan St. Featured speaker will be Ventura County Supervisor John Zaragoza. A brief remembrance will be held for Sgt. 1st Class Stephen B. Cribben, who grew up in Simi Valley and died Nov. 4 in Afghanistan. The event is put on each year by the El Rio Lions Club. For more information, call 535-9147.10 a.m.: Veterans Day event outside Oxnard City Hall, 305 W. Third St., with a brief welcome by Mayor Tim Flynn, followed by a parade down Third Street to B Street before ending at Plaza Park, 500 South C. Arroyo Grande Cemetery in Arroyo Grande.Taylor is a 29-year veteran of the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and headed the state conservation camp near Camarillo. Her mother, Joyce Shipp, said Laura will be cremated in Las Vegas and buried in Thousand Oaks. There will be a celebration of life open to anyone who knew Laura.Laura was at the concert with her son, Corey Shipp, a 23-year-old Marine, who survived the shooting.The celebration of life will take place 12:30 to 4 p.m. at the Malibu West Beach Club, 30756 Pacific Coast Highway.Family members of Chris Hazencomb of Camarillo said details of services have not been finalized. Hazencomb's mother, Maryanne Hazencomb, said because her son was such a sports enthusiast, she would like attendants to wear their favorite sports jersey to the services.Hazencomb, 44, a popular employee at the Camarillo Walmart, was with a close friend at the Route 91 Harvest festival. When the shooting started, Hazencomb used his body to block the bullets and saved his friend's life.A celebration of life for Susan Smith, 53, will be held Oct. 21 at 11 a.m. at Cornerstone Community Church, 2080 Winifred Street, Simi Valley. Those attending are encouraged to wear Smith's favorite color — purple — or their own favorite color, instead of black.Smith, an avid country music fan, was at the Route 91 Harvest festival with friends. As the office manager at Vista Fundamental School in the Simi Valley School District, she quickly became the heart of the school. Richard Lutes April 27, 2017Sammie Scott, believed to be the oldest American florist, died March 29 in Amarillo, TX, at the age of 98. Mr. Scott worked in his shop from 1957 up until two weeks before his death, according to a news release. His daughter, Mary Ruth Albracht, said her father had arranged about 40,000 casket pieces and worked five generations of weddings during his long career.“He shared in that many lives,” Albracht said in the release. “He loved all flowers. Each flower has their own personality and each flower has their own fragrance, and he loved mixing all the colors. His favorite colors were pink and purple and he loved red roses.”Mr. Scott was born in 1918 in Post Oak, TX, and traveled in a covered wagon with his family to farmland south of Lubbock, where he grew up surrounded by cotton fields, horses and mules.
