Wednesday, December 11, 2019Montefiore. (Lynn Ischay/The Plain Dealer)The bouquet assembly lineThe day before the Montefiore visit, Buddenbaum was standing in the organization’s studio on St. Clair Avenue in Cleveland, surrounded by dismembered flower arrangements, walking over a floor covered with bits of stems, petals and leaves from roses, lilies, carnations, chrysanthemums and other floral detritus. It looked like a flower shop massacre.Volunteers had multiple works-in-progress spread across several tables as they sorted, pruned, cut, stacked and arranged flowers in donated glass vases.“You’re not just thinking about putting them in a bottle, you’re looking at them with love,” said volunteer Jenny Herrmann, of Shaker Heights.Don't Edit[embedded content]Don't Editimg class="article__image-content" srcset="https://www.cleveland.com/resizer/m5yp5yVo_L9c0hlKk9d_SimEXfk=/325x0/smart/advancelocal-adapter-image-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/expo.advance.net/img/b83d640d98/width2048/02a_bigheartedblooms.jpeg 325w, https://www.cleveland.com/resizer/l-AnejdBf-jI0hOdwCRt0Q19bmk=/700x0/smart/advancelocal-adapter-image-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/expo.advance.net/img/b83d640d98/width2048/02a_bigheartedblooms.jpeg 700w" src="https://www.cleveland.com/resizer/m5yp5yVo_L9c0hlKk9d_SimEXfk... https://www.cleveland.com/news/g66l-2019/12/0b4530ec81353/bighearted-blooms-sows-cheer-in-nursing-homes-hospitals-with-floral-acts-of-kindness.html

For 62 years, since 1957, the flower shop sat off U.S. 41 about a mile south of downtown Fort Myers at 3366 Cleveland Ave., at the northwest corner of Maravilla Avenue. Not anymore. Last month, the shop moved for just the second time in its existence. Florist co-owners Heather Messmer, daughter of the late Ruth Messmer, and Jessica Gnagey, a granddaughter, moved the shop to 1850 Boy Scout Drive, just west of U.S. 41 and east of Sam Galloway Ford on the far-right corner Sunview Business Center. They are in the former location of Golf Shoes Plus and have signed a five-year lease. The shop began on the front porch of Ruth Messmer’s home in 1952 on the northwest corner of Page Field near what is now the La-Z-Boy Furniture Gallery. It also had a satellite location for about 25 years at The Atrium off College Parkway, a building that was demolished earlier this year to make way for the new FineMark Bank headquarters. Next week, Nov. 11-17, the new location will celebrate its grand re-opening with daily specials on different flowers. ... https://www.news-press.com/story/news/2019/11/05/ruth-messmer-florist-moves-fort-myers-first-time-62-years/4075874002/

She hopes to eventually grow more of her own flowers but was limited this year because of time constraints.Gilbert has been showing up at pop-up shop events like the Huron’s Lakefront Market to offer unique flowers and bouquet arrangements that people can’t get from ordering online.“I can get a wider variety of flowers and give people the experience of creating their own bouquet,” Gilbert said. “I offer advice and help. You could go to a supermarket and pick up a prearranged bouquet, but it’s not going to be as personal.”The community has reacted positively to her growing business.“There’s been nothing but excitement and support. Outside my family, it’s been the most fulfilling thing I have done,” Gilbert said. “It has legs of its own and some times I just feel like I’m walking behind to support it.”Reach reporter Michael Harrington at [email protected], follow the Register at Facebook.com/SanduskyRegister... http://www.sanduskyregister.com/story/201906120022
