Hawes Florist remains a fixture in Maynard - Wicked Local ClintonTuesday, April 18, 2017
I used to go to work with him on Saturdays,” she said, nodding toward her father.Back in those days, Hawes was open on Saturday night, and did a lucrative business selling gardenia blossoms and camelias.“A guy would be waiting in line to buy tickets to the movies and he’d stick his head in and say ‘hey, give me a couple gardenias,’” Victor said.Keeping up with changesDespite fierce competition in the industry, Victor and Melissa pride themselves on putting out a quality product.“And we try to treat people like we want to be treated,” Victor said. While Melissa runs the business end of things, Victor focuses on design. His specialty, Melissa said, is his ability to personalize his creations. He recently designed a dog bone made of flowers for a funeral arrangement for a man who had been very fond of his chocolate Lab. She pointed to a toy fire truck sitting on a nearby table, and said Victor would be incorporating it into a funeral arrangement for a longtime firefighter. Wedding bouquets and centerpieces are also made more special with the addition of sentimental trinkets, brought to him by brides-to-be.“We go out of our way to make something like that happen,” Melissa said. “He’s an incredible designer.”One of the biggest changes to the business came with the advent of credit cards, making it easy for a customer to place an order over the phone, Victor said. Online ordering has made buying flowers even easier and customers scarcer.“Now you hardly ever see a customer,” he said.He misses the conversations with customers, and notes it makes it difficult to personalize a flower arrangement for a customer you have never met.“Usually if you’re talking personally to a customer and if they have green hair and purple eyes and all that other stuff you can size them up and get a feel for what they want,” Victor said. But they are keeping up with the new demands. Melissa recently installed a new computer and they are trying to bring in new products, such as Memory Lamps.Melissa has no idea what the future will hold, noting she is not sure she wants to take on the seven day a week commitment owning the business would require, and her two children, at 10 and 14, are too young to take over, although they often help out at the store. Her son, she said, has no interest in floral arranging, but her daughter is “already showing a flare for it.”At any rate, Victor, at 85, is not yet ready to retire.“He started when he was 9 years old. This is what keeps him going,” she said. This is part of an occasional series on family-owned businesses in Maynard and Stow. This Bride's Floral Dress was PERFECT for a Cherry Blossom Wedding at the Tidal Basin - Washingtonian.comTuesday, April 04, 2017
Suzy chose a bold pink floral gown that perfectly matched the cherry blossoms blooming along the tidal basin where they exchanged their vows. Check out the inspiring images by Amelia Johnson Photography below.Follow B&G on Instagram Like B&G on FacebookIt can be hard to pull off a nontraditional wedding dress, but when Suzy Dodge spotted the strapless flower-printed ‘Katelyn’ gown by designer Wendy Makin on Pinterest, she instantly fell in love with the floral print. “I knew I wanted a non-traditional dress, and it was far and away the most beautiful one I had seen,” she explains. Since the dress was only available in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, Suzy tried to find something similar that was made closer to home, to no avail. Eventually she contacted the designer, based in Australia, and they were able to custom make the dress to her sizing and ship it internationally. “It was even more beautiful than I anticipated,” says Suzy, “and it matched the cherry blossom theme of the wedding to a tee.”Suzy and Justin first met at a New Year’s Eve pub crawl in 2011, but it wasn’t until they came across each other’s dating profiles online that they arranged a date. They went to Society Faire in Alexandria for charcuterie and wine, then strolled Old Town for a while chatting before going for a full meal at Columbia Firehouse. “My first impression of Suzy was her striking wit,” says Justin, “and her willi...

Everyday People: Teacher shares her passion for flowers - The Bozeman Daily ChronicleSunday, February 11, 2018
Leisa Cook inherited a love of flowers from her grandmother in Ohio.In high school, Cook swept floors and cleaned buckets at a florist’s shop to break into the business. For years she worked in every part of the retail floral industry — managing, owning, designing arrangements. She loved it. Still, she thought, “There’s got to be more to this.”AdvertisementCook found the missing piece when she began teaching floral design classes to adults. Her favorite thing is teaching workshops for the elderly and people with disabilities.“It’s been amazing,” she said. “I’m giving something back, helping people.”She has brought her workshop to the state hospital at Warm Springs. Men and women with mental disabilities walk in looking sullen, but when they see buckets of flowers, their faces brighten. When she tells them they can make small bouquets to take back to their rooms, they get excited and forget their troubles.“Most had someone they were going to give the flowers to,” Cook said.Teaching the elderly, she likes to ask about their favorite flowers and what...

Vermilion's Tiffany's Flowers is sprouting history amid old town hall - The Morning JournalSunday, February 11, 2018
Lake Erie, many couples come from out of town to hold their weddings in the city. So, her shop will be working on a bridal show and hosting it at her venue with people coming from all over in Ohio. Her building, the old Town Hall of Vermilion that was built in 1887, lies in the heart of the annual Woollybear Festival, Fish Festival, Ice-A-Fair and other city events where the shop participates in, offer sales and invite vendors into her shop. She said there’s no way better to promote your business. “For me it’s about helping lift up my fellow business owners and really working towards making this a destination, not just for people who are out of town, but the people who are in our area who are rediscovering what a great place this is to be,” she said. “That’s what I think the key in Vermilion and all theses little towns are; I’m helping my business owners and myself. We’re all in this together.” Recognized by the United States Department of the Interior on the National Register of Historic Places, the former town hall is an advantage for Sekeres because what used to be a large council chamber is now a room where she holds events or rents out to others for showers, parties and more. Concerts welcoming local and upcoming artists have also been held on the first floor of her shop, she said, adding, a music video for Wakeman-native and The Voice contestant Emily Keener was shot in the upstairs of the historic building. When Sekeres was looking for the site of her newest building, she thought the old town hall building looked very gloomy inside and she did not want her shop to be there. But her friends fixed cleaned it up, she learned of the building’s character, potential and personality. She said that during festivals or events she holds many people and older citizens come in and share their stories of the building. One slight disadvantage with the historic building is that people come in to only look at the building and don’t realize what she is selling, Sekeres said. However, she uses color, decoration of flowers, smell and merchandise, to help showcase her business. “We are happy here and are blessed,” she said. “The biggest thing is helping other business owners and the town. It comes back.” With the building, Serekes said she plans to have more weddings and other events come to her after hopefully working to refurbish more of the opera house in order to use all of the building.
