April 2, 2018: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Choose Fashion Industry Florist for Royal Wedding, Live Nation ... - BizBashWednesday, April 11, 2018
Ticketmaster. The company’s chief competitor, AEG, has told the officials that venues it manages that serve Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Oakland, Minneapolis, Louisville and Las Vegas, were told they would lose valuable shows if Ticketmaster was not used as a vendor, a possible violation of antitrust law. ... 'You have a disgruntled competitor that is trying to explain their loss around the boogeyman that there were threats made that nobody can document,' said Daniel M. Wall, Live Nation’s antitrust lawyer. The bloodletting between Live Nation and AEG has grown fierce in recent years and rippled through the industry. Last month, another of Mr. Wall’s clients, the heavy-metal icon Ozzy Osbourne, sued AEG on antitrust grounds, saying that it tried to bar him from playing its O2 arena in London, unless he played its Staples Center in Los Angeles. AEG said its policy was a response to Live Nation’s steering concerts to its Los Angeles rival, the Forum. The Justice Department’s inquiries into possible antitrust violations have gone beyond the bitter rivalry, with regulators in the past year looking into reports of Live Nation threats at venues that AEG does not manage: at the H-E-B Center outside Austin, Tex.; and at Boston’s TD Garden, according to executives familiar with the federal review." https://nyti.ms/2uIOK3O3. WHITE HOUSE ADDS LAWN BOWLING TO EASTER FESTIVITIES: Thousands of people are expected to attend the 140th White House Easter Egg Roll, which takes place today. The event has added new activities, including lawn bowling. CNN: “Orchestrated by the East Wing, the festivities are Melania Trump's second crack at the Egg Roll as first lady and her first as a full-time White House resident. Last year, Trump, who was living in New York through the completion of the school year, oversaw the event, which marked a scaling-down and return to basics for the annual eggstravaganza. But this year's Egg Roll will showcase a first lady who has more fully embraced the role of White House hostess, just weeks before the White House holds its first formal state visit with France. This year's Egg Roll will feature activity stations, including the first lady's new addition of lawn bowling, as well as the egg rolling, egg and cookie decorating stations, a state egg display, cards for troops and costumed characters. The White House is expecting nearly 30,000 attendees at the event, which will feature entertainment from the US Marine, Army, Air Force and Navy Bands. Readers at the reading nook will include the first lady, director of national intelligence Dan Coats, Secretaries Elaine Chao and Betsy DeVos, and director of legislative affairs Marc Short. ... In addition to the thousands of hard boiled eggs on the South Lawn, guests will receive an official wooden White House Easter Egg, which this year features a presidential seal on the front and the President and First Lady's signature on the back. The Incredible Egg, which provides all 30,000 real eggs for rolling, dyeing, and eating, also provides the first lady with a commemorative egg gift of her own. The 2018 Commemorative Egg, the 41st of its kind, was designed by Master Egg Artist Deborah Grassel, who holds a Masters in Egg Art from the International Egg Art Guild." https://cnn.it/2GuBPba* LOCAL NEWS *AUSTIN: This year’s Moontower Comedy Festival, which runs April 18-21 at venues downtown, has announced its full lineup. Positively Upstate: Local artist creates sash of flowers for horses at SaratogaTuesday, June 19, 2018
Belmont Stakes the blanket of carnations will be made by none other than Saratoga’s own Susan Garrett.“I’m very honored.” Garrett tells CBS6 from inside Dehn’s Florist of Saratoga Springs. “I can’t believe that artwork of mine could actually adorn a Triple Crown winner.”If you’re a fan of the Saratoga Race Course you’ve most likely seen Garrett’s work. Any blanket draped over a horse in the winner’s circle, she created. In fact, the winner of the Travers, the country’s oldest stakes race, never even had a blanket until Garrett suggested it in the mid-1990’s.“Who would have thought in ’94 when I suggested to the New York Racing Association, let’s put a blanket of flowers on the winner of the Travers, that I would be doing this now.”Garrett says to make a blanket for any Triple Crown race is a dream come true. Now, she not only has one but *seven* blankets going to Belmont park this weekend; one possible to a Triple Crown winner. To keep them fresh, blankets aren’t created until the day before or of the race. So, Friday will be crunch-time for Garrett and her team at their workspace at Dehn’s Florist. Each individual flower is cut and hand sown into the quilt. Altogether, Garrett says there’s usually 750 to 800 flowers on a single blanket.“So, I have a team of volunteers and friends and my husband. We bring in pizza and we do it. Each blanket, just hand sowing them, it’s around 5 hours.”Friday at midnight a ref... http://cbs6albany.com/community/positively-upstate/positively-upstate-local-artist-creates-sash-of-flowers-for-horses-at-saratoga
Gypsophila Helps Ecuador Lead the Way in Flower Exports to ChinaTuesday, June 19, 2018
Yánez. "You can give somebody 10 or 15 stems of gypsophila and it's already a flower arrangement. Whereas in other countries it is usually used a filler flower."Gypsophila on display at a florist in an upscale shopping mall in Shanghai"The China market is totally different to all other markets," says Alejandra García Olivo, Global Purchasing Director at Mimame, which imports and distributes Ecuadorean roses and gypsophila in China. According to Olivo, other markets remain relatively stable in terms of demands for certain shapes, colors and other characteristics, "but China is all about new. New varieties, new colors, anything new."The only exception is white, which remains a somewhat less popular color because white flowers have traditionally been used in China only at funerals in China. Therefore, much of the exports of Ecuadorian gypsophila has been naturally green varieties or tinted gypsophila.China's well-developed internet and social networking culture helped fan the flames of the gypsophila phenomenon and spread it from first tier cities into second and third tier cities, says Sky Liu, owner of Spring Florist, a high-end florist with four retail locations in Shanghai. So far, Ecuador has benefited from China's low domestic gypsophila production. And even if domestic production does pick up, it is likely that Ecuador will maintain an edge in quality. Yánez reports that farmers in Ecuador are already increasing their gypsophila plantings based on projections of continued growth in demand from China.More exports of premium agricultural products such as flowers may be one way for Ecuador to close its trade gap with China, the largest among its trading partners. "In two years China and Ecuador will celebrate 40 years of very positive relations," says Karina Morales Herrera, Consul General for Ecuador in Shanghai, who notes that Ecuador is a leader in social responsibility, gender equality and fair trade in the flower industry. "We are developing a mutually beneficial relationship with China. China is willing to open the door for high quality Ecuadorian products. It's not easy, but over... http://www.producereport.com/article/gypsophila-helps-ecuador-lead-way-flower-exports-china
Victoria wins silver medal at ChelseaTuesday, June 19, 2018
Victoria, who works in her mum's flower studio Flowers by Ann in Carrickmacross, was the only entrant from the Irish Republic in the Young Florist of the Year competition.'Spring Wedding' was the theme for this year's competition and the florists were asked to create a floral wedding throne. One of the conditions was that 2/3 of the finished design had to be fresh flower and/or plant material. For her entry, Victoria created a beautiful fairytale-like throne from silver birch, decorated with pink and purple flowers.'We got the brief in March and I started working on it then,' said Victoria. 'Once I had decided on the silver birch frame for the throne, I went for a wildflower, fairytale look, and colours all came about quite easily.'Victoria drove to Chelsea and back as she said it was the only way of transporting her entry.'I went over on the Friday and had to set up in exhibition by Sunday May 21st.'She was interviewed by Joe Swift of Gardeners World fame and also saw the Queen as Her Majesty enjoyed a private viewing of the 105th RHS Chelsea Garden show.Victoria confesses that it was 'quite a shock' when she learned she... https://www.independent.ie/regionals/argus/news/victoria-wins-silver-medal-at-chelsea-36953705.html
How to persuade cut flowers to last twice as longTuesday, June 19, 2018
This will lengthen bloom time and protect your hands, clothes and linens.THORNY STEMS.When you purchase roses from a florist, the thorns have most likely been removed. When you purchase flowers in bulk from a flower mart or another bulk source (sometimes called a “growers bunch”) or cut them from your own garden, you will need to remove the thorns from the stems with a sharp knife, working from the top down to put less stress on the stems. There’s nothing quite so lovely as a bouquet of beautiful spring flowers. Follow these simple tips and you’ll be able to display them with confidence and pride for much longer than just a few days. Enjoy.Would you like to send a tip to Mary?
