Flower Shuttle brings new life to used arrangements - WRAL.com

Tuesday, September 10, 2019

By Rick Armstrong, producer and Gerald Owens, anchor/reporterRaleigh, N.C. — Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, weddings and funerals keep many florists in business. When the heartfelt emotions that the flowers convey are over, it's typically time for the flowers to be carted off to the dump. Now, "The Flower Shuttle" organizers and volunteers delay that trip to the landfill so that those flowers have another chance to shine.Every Tuesday morning, Raleigh Moravian Church becomes a recycling center for those blooms that have yet to lose their full appeal."Nothing of potential value in the operation is wasted," volunteer Mary Currin explained as she pointed to buckets of flower tubes, rubber bands and preservative packets. "So we recycle the flowers plus the things that come with the flowers."Whether flowers come from florist shops or grocery stores, once they are past their expiration date, the blooms cannot be sold. Flower shuttle regulars are always ready to intervene and breathe new life into the bouquets.Katherine McVey helps coordinate the volunt... https://www.wral.com/flower-shuttle-brings-new-life-to-used-arrangements/18431878/

Yep, those are giant bouquets of flowers popping up in public trash cans in the Triangle - WRAL.com

Thursday, May 02, 2019

C. Museum of Art is at it again with its trash can bouquets to promote its fifth annual Art in Bloom, which runs March 21 to March 24. Last year, the museum placed five giant bouquets around downtown Raleigh to promote the event. This year, they've more than tripled the number to 17 and expanded to across the Triangle. Two bouquets have already popped up at Chapel Hill’s Peace and Justice Plaza and the Chapel Hill Public Library, with three more Franklin Street locations planned through Sunday, March 10, according to a news release. The Town of Chapel Hill helped coordinate locations ahead of the town’s Second Friday Art Walk and Saturday’s UNC–Chapel Hill vs. Duke University basketball rematch in Chapel Hill. Chapel Hill floral designer Amy J. Wurster of Knots 'N Such designed each of the bouquets.Five Raleigh locations, including Union Station and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Gardens, and five Durham cans, including at Central Park and the American Tobacco campus, will continue to blossom from March 11 to March 15, according to the release. The City of Raleigh Arts Commission and City of Durham Public Art Program helped place and manage these installations. The NCMA worked with Durham floral designers Pine State Flowers and Jennifer Wood and Raleigh-based floral designers E. W. Fulcher and Pam Reynolds of Bloom Works and Steve Taras of Watered Garde... https://www.wral.com/yep-those-are-giant-bouquets-of-flowers-popping-up-in-public-trash-cans-in-the-triangle/18241515/

Why Small Businesses Matter in Fairfield: Fresh Flower Bar - HamletHub

Tuesday, November 19, 2019

Flowers have a transformative quality and can immediately add beauty and life to a room and bring joy to people. Since launching my business in 2018, people have described me as a modern florist and I have quickly built a reputation for my unique style and color combinations that are now recognizable in Fairfield County, Connecticut and beyond. The best compliment I get is when people tell me that my flowers don't look real because they are so gorgeous. What is your best selling product/service? My best selling product is my flower arrangements in my signature hatbox. I wanted to create exquisite floral bouquets in a modern vase that is environmentally friendly and can be repurposed into a chic storage container or recycled. My best selling service is my Mobile Flower Bar. I travel with buckets of beautiful flowers to people's homes, local restaurants, businesses and other locations and create handmade bouquets and conduct flower arranging and wreath making workshops. How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?I use many local businesses, including No. 299 which is a gifts and goods store that I share a retail location with. We have a unique business approach because we share a space with complementary products but operate as completely separate business entities. I purchase my flowers from East Coast Wholesale flowers in Norwalk and local Connecticut flower farms. Very often, I will have my flower arrangements on display in local businesses such as The Perfect Pair and Penfield Collective, which drives traffic to my floral studio located at 11 Unquowa Road in Fairfield.Fresh Flower Bar is located at 11 Unquowa Road, Fairfield. Orillia flower shop still blooming after 60 years (6 photos) - OrilliaMatters.Com

Tuesday, November 19, 2019

Marian said.Passion does, too, and that’s what Sandra brings to the table. While in high school, she attended summer courses offered by Flowers Canada. She continued working as a florist while attending university in Ottawa. When she moved back to Orillia in the mid-’90s, she was excited to get to work at her parents’ shop. It’s a job she enjoys now as much as she did then.“It’s the creative aspect of it. I get to express somebody’s sentiment with flowers,” she said. “It’s the personal touch.”The business comes with its challenges, though.“Right now, it’s online shopping,” Sandra said, but assured all of the orders placed, whether online or in person, are designed in store. It’s also difficult to find trained florists, she said, but Evans Flowers has managed to employ eight people.“It’s not a great-paying industry, it’s hard work and it’s stressful,” she said, noting one has to be passionate about it.Despite the challenges, Sandra sees a rosy future for Evans Flowers.“As long as the community support is there, businesses will remain,” she said. “The box stores have taken from every industry, but it’s the quality of service and the product that I offer that I hope continues to shine through.”According to her parents, the business is in good hands.“As parents and former owners, we’re very proud of the role Sandy has assumed and her growing the business,” Jerry said.Sandra thanked the community for its support over the years.“I cannot be more grateful. Let’s hope for another 60 years,” she said.To mark the milestone, Evans Flowers will be donating a portion of its November sales to Mariposa House Hospice. Certain amounts will be donated for purchases of both more and less than $60.It’s a cause Sandra is happy to support.“It’s something that this community needs,” she said. “The last stage of life has touched all of us. Having a place where someone can go with their family in the community is important.”The business will also be offering weekly giveaways and prizes in store and on its social media platforms. For more information about Evans Flowers, call 705-325-2719, visit its website or stop in at the shop at 47 West St. N. https://www.orilliamatters.com/local-news/orillia-flower-shop-still-blooming-after-60-years-6-photos-1773822

Marigold harvest a gift to workers who have kept Mellano blooming for 50 years - The San Diego Union-Tribune

Tuesday, November 19, 2019

Knott’s Berry Farm.At the request of poinsettia grower and family friend Paul Ecke, the Mellano family took over management of the American Florist Exchange in L.A. in the 1960s. And in the 1970s, Giovanni and Maria’s son Mike Mellano Sr. and son-in-law Battista Castellano moved to Oceanside to expand the family’s flower empire. Chairman of Mellano & Company Michael Mellano stands among marigolds at the Mellano & Company farm on Friday, October 25, 2019 in Oceanside.(Hayne Palmour IV / The San Diego Union-Tribune) Today, Mellano & Co. farms more than 40 varieties of cut flower products, particularly the fresh foliage and greenery that fills out most traditional floral bouquets. With locations in Oceanside, Carlsbad, Orange County and Las Vegas, it’s the largest specialty cut-flower grower in the nation, producing 6 million flower stems each year. In partnership with the Ecke family and Armstrong Nursery, Mellano & Co. also oversees the 40-acre growing and wholesale operations for The Flower Fields in Carlsbad.Michelle Castellano Keeler, the daughter of Battista Castellano, also grew up on the farm and today is the company’s corporate vice president. She and her cousin, Mike M., said the company has always had a heart for immigrant workers because of their family’s roots in Italy.During World War II when Japanese farmers in California were sent to internment camps, Giovanni Mellano purchased some of their L.A. farm properties and equipment for $1 and then stored everything for the internees until they returned after the war.At the Oceanside farm, Mellano & Co. offers onsite housing for its workers, some of whom have lived on the property for two generations. From 40 to 50 workers live there now, most of them were born in Mexican as well as a few Guatemalans and a family of Congolese refugees. Keeler said the idea for the worker housing came from her dad.“He was an immigrant himself and when we first moved here, he felt the way the Hispanic workers were treated was horrible so he built this area on our farm where they could live and be safe,” she said. Advertisement Taking care of workers is also smart business. Mellano said that 10 years ago, 50 people would show up to apply for five open jobs. Now, with the local unemployment rate at a historic low, just one person will show up to apply for five open jobs, and they may not even have the proper legal documentation to qualify. Their Mellano & Co. now farms more than 340 acres of flowers in Oceanside and Carlsbad.(Courtesy of Mellano & Co.) Beyond the labor shortage, growing flowers is an increasingly challenging business. The cost of water, electricity and equipment keeps rising along with competition from South American growers, who have significantly lower production costs. To adapt over the years, the company shifted its growing focus away from high labor-intensive crops like gladiolus and chrysanthemums to lower labor-intensive crops like myrtle, ruscus and other greenery. The company also expanded beyond the cut-flower trade into growing hemp, succulents and potted poinsettias and hydrangeas. The company has also invested in state-of-the-art equipment, like sensors that measure the amount of water in the soil to... https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/communities/north-county/story/2019-10-27/marigold-harvest-a-gift-to-workers-who-have-kept-mellano-blooming-for-50-years

Bloom & Plume's Maurice Harris Reimagines Black Art - Complex

Tuesday, November 19, 2019

I’m a Black, gay male living in America, and that's complicated,” he says, flatly. “So there's a lot of stuff to work out and plenty of inspiration there.”The grandson of a florist and son of a crafty mother, Harris acquired an eye for creative inspiration at a young age. His family possessed an artistic audaciousness that emboldened him to eventually embrace his own. That ultimately led Harris to creating art that stands as a testament to one’s autonomy through his floral business, Bloom & Plume. Located in the heart of L.A.’s Echo Park, it’s much more than a flower shop as Harris and his team don’t just create beautifully ornate floral arrangements but works of art. This extends past the bouquets themselves to postcards and calendars that capture both the beauty of flowers and the Black experience. Through his personal and creative journey, Harris aims to provide his community the type of access and exposure to the arts that he did not have growing up. “Bloom & Plume is a hub for creativity,” he says. “It's a hub for showing the importance of beauty and aesthetics, and not having to always be in an oppressive state.” That mind state is a direct result of the California native’s family upbringing. As a child, Harris was encouraged to explore everything he wanted to do as long as he promised to “do it well and give it all that [he had].” Taking that directive to heart, he initially pursued fashion, studying at L.A.’s Otis Co... https://www.complex.com/pop-culture/2019/11/maurice-harris-microsoft-surface-complexcon

Prada Introduces Fashionable Floral Arrangements Around the World - Vogue

Tuesday, November 19, 2019

In New York, Milan, Paris, London, Moscow, Shanghai, and Tokyo, the brand has partnered with local florists to create custom Prada bouquets that will be wrapped, of course, in the brand’s Resort 2020 campaign instead of traditional flower paper. In New York, the bouquets will be available at Bethel Food Gourmet in the West Village—and as with any bit of luxury fashion, they will be exclusive and specially made. You see, not just any floral arrangement is Prada-worthy: In keeping with the palette and pared-back theme of the Resort collection, Prada is offering special flowers for its bouquets. Yellow celosias, pink dahlias, white oriental lilies, red celosias, and big sunflowers are what’s on Prada’s floral menu, to name a few, allowing for shoppers to customize the exact arrangement to their taste. The installations will be open for a limited time only, so head to Bethel’s soon to get your Prada fix, or check out one of Prada’s international stands at I Fiorai di Piazza del Carmine in Milan, Maison Meunier in Paris, Petals at Bibendum in London, Flower Studio 55 in Moscow, the Beast flagship store in Shanghai, or Nicolai Bergman’s store in Tokyo. https://www.vogue.com/slideshow/prada-resort-2020-floral-arrangements
