Tuesday, April 16, 2019Simply take a small branch of mistletoe and tie a ribbon on the stem, or make a mistletoe ball by using a sphere of florist foam and sticking in leaves all around it. Use a ribbon to hang in a doorway. Poinsettias are a must-have for many; when choosing one to purchase, select a plant that looks large for the pot and is thick and full. The colorful part, called bracts, which are modified leaves that surround the true flower, should be fully colored to the edge and not have green on them. To keep poinsettias healthy, keep them away from drafts and water them properly. Don’t over water — wait until the soil starts to dry out at the top of the root ball before watering. But when needed, soak thoroughly in a sink with the decorative wrapper taken off. Let it drain well then place the wrapper back on. Perhaps not as common as the poinsettia, the Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera bridgesi) is another traditional holiday plant that also brightens up the home and brings in holiday cheer. Let the potting mix dry out almost completely before watering, then soak thoroughly when needed. To get one to rebloom in time for Christmas next year, reduce water and fertilizer starting in August when days start to get shorter – this will aid in flower bud development. Also keep the plant away from drafts or heaters and provide a steady, cool temperature (around 70 degrees). Bloomex also sells other products, like gourmet gift baskets and balloons. To test the quality of Bloomex's products, Marketplace ordered five different bouquets from the online retailer to be delivered within the Toronto area.None arrived within the selected delivery window, even though Marketplace had paid extra for them to be delivered at that time. Delivery confirmation emails for each bouquet also arrived prior to any of the bouquets being delivered.Marketplace also showed all five bouquets to Don Waltho, a longtime florist and founder of the Canadian Institute of Floral Design (CIFD), a private career college registered with the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, asking him to compare the delivered products with the flowers that were advertised on Bloomex's website.Overall, Waltho graded all five bouquets as a "fail" due to the poor quality and condition of the flowers; he also identified many flowers that were missing or where others were substituted in. ?Bloomex's substitution policy states that "due to our order volume fluctuation, we reserve the right to substitute with similar product of equal or greater value."
