Effort to eliminate florist licenses in Louisiana becomes a thorny issue - Fox News
Tuesday, January 08, 2019BATON ROUGE, La. – In Louisiana, florists must know the proper storage temperature for plants, wiring methods for various flowers and how to construct a cascade bouquet. They pay $100 a year. The Pelican state is the only state in the country that requires a license to sell flowers, a distinction that has become a point of contention among florists who say it legitimizes their trade and state lawmakers who feel Louisiana is too overwhelmed with a dizzying number of professional license requirements.State lawmakers wanted to cut back on the number of licenses by eliminating the floral one. That has drawn the ire of florists who take pride in regulating their profession – by weeding out people who know little about floral arrangements. Orchids sit on display at Red Onion in Baton Rouge. Several florists throughout the state say they want to keep a licensing and testing requirement in place. Louisiana is the only state in the country that requires florists to be licensed. Wedding Inspirations: What do you need to plan a party? AN.GLE Events dishes on event planning - The Advocate
Monday, December 17, 2018The bride and groom, who grew up in New Orleans, love seafood. The ice bar was designed as a Louisiana seafood bar for raw oysters on the 1/2 shell, crabmeat ravigote, lousiana shrimp, sushi and ceviche with large bowls made out of ice to hold the shrimpBlue hydrangea and blue thistle were frozen into legs of the ice bar, again grounding the room with blue and adding the thistle as the Urquhart family is originally from Scotland and thistle is Scotland's national emblem. Iron arches were used to mimic the mirrored arches in the New Orleans Country Club's "gold room" and as a base to bring in the pops of colors to relate to the other rooms (with the colors that were pulled from the Urquhart plaid). Flowers by Kim Starr Wise. The couple's cipher designed by Betty Hunley was the final personalized touch. PROVIDED PHOTO BY A Bryan Photo The photos illustrating this story are from wedding reception at New Orleans Country Club: The bride and groom are from New Orleans, and they knew each other growing up but didn't start dating until a few years ago. What is the theme of the wedding? No theme, just a really fun and beautiful wedding. What elements of this party make it special? Our main focus for this wedding was on the floral design. The New Orleans Country Club is already a beautiful space, so we created floral installations for each room that were all completely different but still cohesive. The couple loves blue so we used that as the base color. The style of the flowers was based on an English garden style. We incorporated the Urquhart (family) plaid into elements of the wedding and used that as inspiration with the florals by pulling in deep reds and greens to contrast the blue.We spent hours and hours working closely with florist Kim Starr Wise and the client using inspiration from many different places and pictures to achieve a look that was both unique and in keeping with the client’s aesthetic. It was a blast!*************What are the top three things that people need to bring you to plan a party? 1) A budget is helpful, but if unknown, a list of what’s most important to the client. 2) Trust in us and the planning process. 3) A fun guest list! What has been the most unusual request?
