"Not all of the parents have the money to buy a big, big one."The lessons her grandmother taught her in kindheartedness are priceless, Hampton said. These are lessons she has passed to her children."Help people in need if they need it," she said.At school Friday, Katie was all smiles wearing her new mum."I love red and sparkly stuff," Katie said. She’s out to make agriculture more accessible to women while bringing the practice of “buying local” back to U.S. flower buyers, who today are largely dependent on South America for blooms.Calhoun is a fifth-generation farmer who got her start in farming in 2011. She’d tried the college track and worked in the culinary and catering industry, but hadn’t found a satisfying career path. Then she began working for her sister Emily, a certified master gardener with a flower design business, and quickly found her calling. “That first day out in the field changed everything for me,” she said. “I’d gotten up early, was out there when the sun came up, and realized this was where I need to be.”As the design business took off, Susannah took on increasing responsibility for the growing... http://www.lcsun-news.com/story/money/2017/05/28/slow-flower-movement-takes-root-southern-new-mexico/102052728/

Shuttered Nuclear Plants Aren't Replaced By Green Energy | The ... - Daily Caller
Tuesday, November 08, 2016Source: US Energy Information AdministrationEIA pointed to a nuclear power plant in Fort Calhoun, Neb., which closed last week. Large-scale layoffs will begin next year, with 400 people getting terminated over the next 20 months. The nuclear power plant cranked out electricity for 43 years, and was licensed to continue doing so for another 17, but the plant became so uneconomical that the company decided to pay the $1.5 billion in decommissioning costs over the next 60 years. Paying the decommissioning costs, no matter how steep, is still comparatively cheaper than competing against subsidized wind, solar power or cheap natural gas.America currently operates 99 nuclear reactors across 61 commercially-operating nuclear power plants, according to the EIA. The average plant employs between 400 and 700 highly-skilled workers, has a payroll of about $40 million and contributes $470 million to the local economy, according to the Nuclear Energy Institute.Follow Andrew on TwitterSend tips to andrew@dailycallernewsfoundation.org.Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience. Effort to eliminate florist licenses in Louisiana becomes a thorny issue - Fox News
Tuesday, January 08, 2019BATON ROUGE, La. – In Louisiana, florists must know the proper storage temperature for plants, wiring methods for various flowers and how to construct a cascade bouquet. They pay $100 a year. The Pelican state is the only state in the country that requires a license to sell flowers, a distinction that has become a point of contention among florists who say it legitimizes their trade and state lawmakers who feel Louisiana is too overwhelmed with a dizzying number of professional license requirements.State lawmakers wanted to cut back on the number of licenses by eliminating the floral one. That has drawn the ire of florists who take pride in regulating their profession – by weeding out people who know little about floral arrangements. Orchids sit on display at Red Onion in Baton Rouge. Several florists throughout the state say they want to keep a licensing and testing requirement in place. Louisiana is the only state in the country that requires florists to be licensed. Wedding Inspirations: What do you need to plan a party? AN.GLE Events dishes on event planning - The Advocate
Monday, December 17, 2018The bride and groom, who grew up in New Orleans, love seafood. The ice bar was designed as a Louisiana seafood bar for raw oysters on the 1/2 shell, crabmeat ravigote, lousiana shrimp, sushi and ceviche with large bowls made out of ice to hold the shrimpBlue hydrangea and blue thistle were frozen into legs of the ice bar, again grounding the room with blue and adding the thistle as the Urquhart family is originally from Scotland and thistle is Scotland's national emblem. Iron arches were used to mimic the mirrored arches in the New Orleans Country Club's "gold room" and as a base to bring in the pops of colors to relate to the other rooms (with the colors that were pulled from the Urquhart plaid). Flowers by Kim Starr Wise. The couple's cipher designed by Betty Hunley was the final personalized touch. PROVIDED PHOTO BY A Bryan Photo The photos illustrating this story are from wedding reception at New Orleans Country Club: The bride and groom are from New Orleans, and they knew each other growing up but didn't start dating until a few years ago. What is the theme of the wedding? No theme, just a really fun and beautiful wedding. What elements of this party make it special? Our main focus for this wedding was on the floral design. The New Orleans Country Club is already a beautiful space, so we created floral installations for each room that were all completely different but still cohesive. The couple loves blue so we used that as the base color. The style of the flowers was based on an English garden style. We incorporated the Urquhart (family) plaid into elements of the wedding and used that as inspiration with the florals by pulling in deep reds and greens to contrast the blue.We spent hours and hours working closely with florist Kim Starr Wise and the client using inspiration from many different places and pictures to achieve a look that was both unique and in keeping with the client’s aesthetic. It was a blast!*************What are the top three things that people need to bring you to plan a party? 1) A budget is helpful, but if unknown, a list of what’s most important to the client. 2) Trust in us and the planning process. 3) A fun guest list! What has been the most unusual request?
