Homegrown and beautiful: Photo show makes a case for Florida native plants
Tuesday, August 14, 2018It would look a great deal more like the 100 photographs of Florida native plants in Renewal: Going Native at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre in West Palm Beach. PHOTOS: Florida native plants at Palm Beach Photographic CentreMany Florida gardeners have gone native, including the photo center’s president and chief executive officer, Fatima NeJame. She doesn’t feel she’s missing out by bypassing the exotic plants that have squeezed out natives in many landscapes. Everything that grows in her West Palm Beach yard is either a native or an edible plant. They’re not only beautiful, but also if you plant the right native in the right place “you’re protecting the wildlife and you don’t need to fertilize or water so much,” she said. She hopes the exhibition convinces others to give native plants a try.NeJame organized the exhibition with West Palm Beach resident Susan Lerner, the three-term president of the Palm Beach County Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society.NeJame is the chapter’s treasurer. Lerner recently was hired to fill the newly created director of horticulture position with the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach.“We want to show people how beautiful natives are and while we’re at it show how important they are,” she ... https://www.palmbeachdailynews.com/news/local/homegrown-and-beautiful-show-makes-case-for-florida-native-plants/UGAGaMxraCfNzqgB0MY4CP/
Graceful peony has super colors for the bedroom
Tuesday, July 17, 2018Palm Beach, where you’ll likely find patterns with blooming peonies that will suit your style. Consider Mac Fabrics at 426 Clematis St., West Palm Beach. I often visit Boca Bargoons at 910 U.S. 1 in Lake Park for a look through the racks — and I always appreciate the very helpful staff there.A trip to Boca Bargoons also means a stop for lunch nearby at The Carving Station, 720 U.S. 1, a popular and casual buffet-style restaurant. It isn’t fancy, but it sure is fun — and perfect for summertime, I think.*Palm Beacher Carleton Varney is president of Dorothy Draper & Co., an international design firm with offices in New York, West Palm Beach, London and White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. Floral art blossoms at Central Park Art Festival in Winter Haven as season ready to turn to spring - The Ledger
Tuesday, June 27, 2017The West Palm Beach couple sell their pieces at festivals around Florida five to six times a year. They had not counted how many clay orchids they sold this weekend, but they proudly displayed a Ridge Art Association and Victor Smith Law Group Purchase Award ribbon at their booth. Peter Schoenly of Ridge Manor said this weekend's event was the best sales he's had of the five or six times he's participated in the festival, which is in its 39th year. The self-taught artist of 25 years added a touch of color to the last weekend of winter by showcasing his stained glass. The sunny weather did his work justice, shining colors of the rainbow from his pieces onto the sidewalk, capturing the attention of festival goers.Sales are expected to peak in the spring and summer months for Alan and Bonnie Leising of Haines City, who displayed their metal flower showers this weekend. They've been creating metal sculptures for 20 years, Alan Leising said, and got the idea for their flower showers — called Our Flower Showers — about a decade ago when they were staying in a motel in Delray Beach during an art festival selling copper butterfly sculptures."We saw these old crummy pipes and thought they would lend themselves to making showers, so we made six of them and they sold instantly," Alan Leising said. "We knew we had something special on our hands ... they're really different."He said this year's art show was better than last's, because last year it rained. And with the start of spring starts the Leisings' busy seasons, he said."We're selling outdoor showers and sprinklers and things, so business is really going to pick up for us in the upcoming months," he said.— Madison Fantozzi can be reached at madison.fantozzi@theledger.com or 863-401-6971. Time to smell roses: Couple selling 40-yr.-old Lake Worth flower shop - Palm Beach Post
Tuesday, May 23, 2017The shop is very demanding and stressful.”The site has been on the market for only a week. The asking price is $735,000, with the listing being handled by Copeland & Co. Real Estate in West Palm Beach.Todd says the business is for sale for $175,000.SEE ALSO: Lake Worth beach fund drying up quickly — city struggles to find solutionsTodd and Betsy want everyone to know that A Flower Patch isn’t closing. While the couple will no longer be involved, the plan is to sell the shop and keep a smaller version of it in the Lake Worth area, preferably near where the shop is now on 3435 S. Military Trail. The Hillmans, who have two children, Lauren, 30 and Dylan, 26, plan to see the world — or, at the very least, the country. The goal is pack up the RV with their four Yorkies ranging from 6 to 10 in age, and head off to parts unknown.“Our fantasy is to take off and not have to worry about where we’re going or what we’re doing,” Betsy says. “That would be heavenly.”The seeds for A Flower Patch were sown in Miami in the 1970s, where Betsy was in the floral business and Todd was a buyer for a lawn and garden company.“We both loved gardening,” Todd recalls. Both also caught the entrepreneurial bug.“We knew if we ran our business and we were going to get fired, we’d know ahead of time,” Todd says, laughing heartily. “We saw so many people getting fired because they were reaching retirement age and the company didn’t want to pay their pension.”The Hillmans scouted cities — Tampa, Miami, Fort Pierce — but kept coming back to the Lake Worth/West Palm Beach area.“We felt Palm Beach County was going to be a growing county,” Todd says. They moved into a 1,000-square-foot space the couple rented for six years west of Lake Worth before buying the building they’re in now in 1985.It’s often been said marriage is hard work, and, yes, it can be. But it takes a special person to be married to the person they’re in business with.“We see each other 24/7 so it’s not like we can come home and talk about our day because we shared our day,” Todd says. The key to making it work, Betsy says, is setting up clearly defined roles and not overstepping.Todd, an old school guy who prefers personal contact with customers over online ordering, handles the business end, while Betsy is in charge of the flowers.“I don’t stick my nose in what he’s doing and he would never say, ‘Why did you order all these yellow roses?’” Betsy says.Employees say the Hi... http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/local/time-smell-roses-couple-selling-old-lake-worth-flower-shop/cTSMVYr8estkjwz5TVwFdJ/

Better Than Roses - The Newtown Bee
Sunday, February 10, 2019The Sunshine Bouquet Company began in New Jersey before branching out to Florida and Columbia, which allowed “Sunshine to provide efficient, rapid delivery to the United States.”Ms Brisch said Big Y also offers flower bouquets and potted plants from local farms, like Cavicchio Greenhouse in Sudbury, Mass. Since Big Y is headquartered in Springfield, Mass., its local farms are located in Massachusetts or Connecticut. Newtown Big Y Store Director Angelo Soto shared a list of all of its local farms, and those include Casertano’s Greenhouse in Cheshire, Connecticut Valley Flower in Hamden, Geremia Greenhouse in Wallingford, and Grower Direct in Somers.“There are so many local things to chose from,” said Ms Brisch. From choosing to support a conscientious company to finding ways to support local farms there is more to consider than just the color of a bouquet’s assorted flowers.Off-Season OptionsConnecticut-grown flowers can be hard to find in the winter.Natalie Collette of The Gardenist of Norwalk offers floral arrangements and designs, along with garden design support and maintenance, according to her Facebook page, The Gardenist. She mostly sells her flowers to local florists and people who contact her directly. A farmer florist, Ms Collette said she has private properties where she plants seasonal flowers, all organically. She harvests and creates bouquets along with maintaining a dahlia farm in New Haven. Growers in Connecticut, unless they have a greenhouse, do not grow flowers out of season, she observed. This makes it harder for local shops to maintain locally grown flowers in the winter months. When asked for ideas for alternative Valentine’s Day presents, Ms Collette recommended gifting a living flower arrangement or foraging for a bouquet of seasonal elements. Potted plants from a nursery also provide year-long enjoyment.“If it is a perennial, you can enjoy the plant from when you purchase it [until you] plant it in the spring,” said Ms Collette, who is currently selling house plants.Around mid-January, Evelyn Lee of Butternut Gardens LLC of So... https://www.newtownbee.com/better-roses/02102019
